I was just wondering this after being told to drop my rear speakers. If you only have front speakers why did you chose to do it that way and how may people have tried it but really didn't like it? Thanks, Drew

I only have fronts too. imo I get better sound this way. I get the nice crisp high notes from the front with all the bass in the back. Also, it pushes more power to your subs if thats in issue. I hooked them up 3 days ago, not only thought that it didnt sound right, I noticed my subs dropped about 1/4 their power. No doubt because Im running such a small set up, but the difference was extremely noticeable.

Front stage for me only. Everything is up front. Tweeter, midrange, midbass, and sub. BTW, your sub shouldn't sound like it is coming from the back. Center channel kinda narrows the sound stage IMO.

I've got a minivan and no rear speakers. I feel sorry for my third-row passengers because they are gettin pounded by the L7, and can hardly hear the music. But up front, boy does it sound nice. It's loud as hell, too. I don't see any reason to have rears, because my fronts are loud and sound great by themselves.

Alpine Type X up front powered by 2 channels of a 7541a. Other 2 channels bridged for an Assassin 10. No rear fill. And I like it that way - stock VW Monsoon system comprised of front and rear components. No decent sound stage and imaging, and no bass. Glad to have gotten rid of it.

Depends on the car I am driving. I drive around a lot of people, so if its a 4 seater, then I will put some coaxials in the back and cut the gain on them so you can barely hear them, and then when Its just me in the car, flip a switch and kill the rear amp. Works like a charm!

I removed mine a couple months ago. No need in a small sedan. Plus, it allowed some of the pressure in my trunk to escape giving me better/more bass up front and not killing my trunk lid.

My 8" sub, 6.5" midrange and tweeters are all up front with my 2 15's in the bed of my truck. It sounds incredible and the sound surrounds you completely. There is no need for rear fill.

After lurking on this forum for a while I unhooked my rear door speakers, bridged my 4 channel amp into 2 channels and put double the power to my front components. Huge improvement in quality and quantity of sound from the front, no loss and possible small improvement from the back seat. 04 Tacoma Doublecab pickup, rear door speakers are aimed directly at the rear passengers feet, so they were no help to begin with. Biggest bummer is that I could have saved the $ for the rear door 2-ways and gotten better front components. Live and learn...

I might try this...Mine are just sitting in the back unhooked because I have to take off a huge *** portion of paneling to uninstall them.

I only have 2 6.5's and 2 Tweeters.

They are active, receive plenty of power. No need for rear fill (I even had some, put it on a switch... and flipped it on/off. No difference w/ a powerfull front stage.)

How many people only have front speakers?

That is like asking how many people only have a front head unit. Of course having a surround processor would be an exception to this... I only have two ears. Until I grow a seat of ears facing behind me I don't ever plan on using rear speakers

I understand that, i'm just a noob to the whole speaker placements, feqencies, crossovers, ect, ect,... So i was just try to state exactly what i wanted to know. I've realised that most people like just front speakers and because of that i'm going to try it out and see. Thanks

I used to only run fronts but I threw in a cheap set of eD eDi6500's and Soundstream TWT.2 tweeters to make it all blend better. I'm not sure if I'll need it with my new component set or not.

I have rears...check my crappy pics for how they are "installed"(if you can call it that)...my setup is very unorthodox because I don't blindly do what everyone else does...I swaped the left and right signals to the rears so you get a centered image on the dash but you still get stereo from the fronts...sounds amazing to me...nobody else in here does it that I know of and they usually hate/flame when this topic comes up because they havn't heard a set up like mine...I think it depends on your vehicle....I wouldn't recommend this type of setup in a tiny car like a nissan z or something similiar...it has to be a passenger car with a fold down rear seat...I ported the arm rest so the rear deck speakers don't blow out from the pressure of the sub if the seat is up...

waiting on a new sub amp, but in the meantime using all speakers. Once i get my new amp installed, gonna run just fronts. I'd assume that not running rears is for anyone with a subwoofer(s)?

Tiger Bass
02-15-2007, 01:53 PM
Im curious about running rears, not that I want to though. But wouldnt having them hooked up being counter productive for the fact that the are drawing power from your car that could be going to your amp (assuming your electrical is fairly stock) and wouldnt the subs pretty much just cancel out rears if you left them in the stock placement? Stock placement being different from car to car of course...

This is pretty much what I experienced first hand anyways and just want to confirm it.

Tiger Bass
02-15-2007, 05:18 PM
Another thing. Since Im probably never going to run rear speakers again, what would yall think of opening up as much space between my trunk and the cabin of my car as possible in order to increase the SPL?

My rear speakers are covered up by a huge fiberboard panel and 2 stock square covers. Im thinking of snipping away enough metal to match the area of the covers exactly. I'll probably end up creating an extra 35-40 sq in of area for the air to flow through.

sporty_drew
02-15-2007, 05:20 PM
The only proble I know of is your bracing placement in your rear deck. I wanted to do that with my monte when i had it but the bracing was more than i wanted to work around, but it all depends on the car.

Tiger Bass
02-15-2007, 05:25 PM
I don't think it'll be an issue as far as harming the structural integrity of the frame or trunk. There's one beam down the middle and then 1 on each far side of the speakers.

Not an issue unless you are running a lot of power to the rears, which you definitely wouldn't want to do because the whole idea is to not let the rear speakers draw your staging back.

and wouldnt the subs pretty much just cancel out rears if you left them in the stock placement?

No. The subs are playing sub bass, likely below 80hz, and your rear speakers would play above that. Your subs won't "cancel" out your rear speakers anymore than they would your front speakers.

The reason most people don't want to run rear speakers is because ideally (for SQ) you want to have all of the sound coming from in front of you, like it would if you were watching a band live. Having rears will pull the stage back. Some like that, because the sound will "surround" you more. Some people want rears because when they crank their volume to ungodly levels, they have twice as many speakers in the cabin to make it that much louder. And then you might consider your rear passengers. In a large vehicle, just having fronts only can make the music sound as if it is coming from far away, and when you consider the seatbacks and other geography of the interior, it's all deflected anyway. Not cool for them, but is that important to you? It is for me. It's also ****** to put in a 5.1 concert DVD and have the band in front of me and crowd noise behind me. I have two RATM DVDs that put me right in the pit.
