I have pretty much given up on being an SPL competitor. I am looking now more into SQ. I am not going all out or whatever, but the SQ intro looks like a good place to start. One of the judging criteria is stage width. I don't really understand this. I can move around in my car and I can hear the music no matter where I put my head. Does anyone have a better explanation?

where the speakers are aimed (middle of car vs @ the seats) has alot to do with it

Stage width isnt where you head is, it's where you preceive the sound is comming from. In a 5' wide limited area it is hard to get a wide stage. I cant tell you how as mine barely extends pas the A-Pillars and I am interested in how to widden it as well. Time alignment did nothing as far as width. It did center the sound.

I see...a wide stage in front of you. How do you know how wide yours is? What tests can i do?

It's just what you preceive... How do you hear the instrament. When a guitar strum is right channel only where does it seem to becomming from. The A-Pillar, right infront of your ear, or the car in traffic next to you. you cant really measure it and there is no perfect stage width IMO. I wouldnt want to be listening to a song and have a right channel only guitar strum sound like it is comming from the feild next to the road.

It's kind of hard to pick out particular instruments with older rap music, mainly due to the fact there are no "real" instruments.

Any suggestions on a test disc or something?>

Lots of enclosure testing, test tones, careful ears

Any suggestions...would that lend more to a sealed or ported enclosure.

I am thinking sealed. But big or small?

You should be less interested in having the sub play up to 80 and more in your mids playing down to 60. Also, there arent too many rap songs with sound stages. So unless you listen to Rock, Reggae, Jaz, Blues, Classical, etc... you only need clear volcals and a good transient responce.

profi kicks = 80hz@12 db slope

It would not have to play flat to 80, but 60 or so.

I may have to check out some Jazz to better experience my sound stage.

That doesn't have anything to do with the topic. Instead, you should send me an autographed baseball.

and that is why you need some 8's in your doors :up2somet:

my 18 will be playing from about 55-60 down and the peerless sls 8's will take over up to about 300.

I have considered that...I also considered using 3 10s or something. I got an extended cab chevy so I got the room.

I am really liking the CVXs but I need to sell some stuff first.

Also look into angled mounting rings for the mids or kick pods and tweeter placement is also something to look into.
