Vehicle: 1995 Miata soft-top
Work to be done: New door panel with pods for 6.5" mid-range, new handle/armrest assembly, and a leather cover.

Today I started on the door handle's and armrest. Rings for the pods have been done for months so thats out of the way. This was probably the trickiest thing. I'll just let the pics speak...

Stock door panel. All it has is that weak-*** speaker grill, a handle, and a pocket thats worthless...

Carboard templet drawn and the speaker ring/grill in its up-and-coming spot...
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o25/j3bus2k3/DSC00116.jpg

Drawn out on MDF...
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o25/j3bus2k3/DSC00117.jpg

Both pieces cut out. Note*there are two pieces per side. One is a sort of post/mounting and the other is the beauty piece. You can see the back piece cut to give the handle its shape...
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o25/j3bus2k3/DSC00118.jpg

Went to roundover the beauty piece and forgot to set my depth :furious: Had to recut another piece...
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o25/j3bus2k3/DSC00126.jpg

New top piece rounded over, cleaned out and sanded down pretty good...

Close up of where mounting post meets handle, notce how I tried to let the round-over edge flow into the post? sexay...but I'm just ocd really...

Close up of bottom mouting area...not so clean as the top...And a ****** picture :(

After: (NOTE: pouch will not be there on final product...)

And an overall to end it...

Me too. I realized last night while driving home that I didnt have any and then while bored out of my mind, tried to figure out how to make them. It was actually a lot easier than I thought but would have been 1000x easier if my router table wasnt Out of service...

Well....Joanns didnt have much, but they did have some foam. I'm still unsure how to actually cover the **** thing. I've never done any sort of fabric work and I'm alittle dumbfounded. I think I have an idea of how, but we'll see in the coming weeks if it works....

No pic update but...

Went to a local fabric store and picked up all my imiation leather vinyl, fleece for the fibreglass work, wood backing and dowels to moutn the rings. Tomorrow starts shaping and mounting work. Was going to do it today but I felt like crap...until I took one. Feelin' better now, :p:

Small Update:

Its cold out (~60's), its grey, and I've got the flu so I maganged to get a little done. Got the carboard template for the panel done and transferred to the paperboard. Got it cut out later and then, after realizing its probably alil too cold to start glassing, I started work on all the keyhole slots for the push-pins till my legs gave out. Didnt take many pics but here they are:

The only thing getting re-used off the old panel is the top black leather piece that hooks over the door. I'm making a new bottom half for the new arm-rest and pod...

I dont 100% understand what your talking about. The factory top piece, in the pics its the long black leather piece front front to back...is going on the new panel. I didnt have to change a thing at all for the top part of the panel, just the main bulk of it being the bottom half...

What supplies specifically? Router bits are from Infinity tools, Router is a skil, Craftsman work station, Router table was a craftsman, everything else: sand paper, random drill bits, etc was bought at Home Depot. Fibreglass came from a friends company...forget the name.

All kinds of problems today...

First I wake up and remember I have a stats test...

Then get home and stufy for my Bio test in an hour from now...

I take a break when my neighbor gets home with my new router bits, a 45* miter and a flush trim...BUT they're 1/2" shank and I need 1/4" shank...

Hes confused and thought that they should fit the table but realized he gave me a universal table that you mount your router to...BUT when we tried to mount it, my router doesnt fit it...

So...either a new router, or new table, AND new bits...I cant catch a break today...no real progress till friday when I can redo the handles and start some shaping...

Not yet...I've been looking for one. I still need to find a foam backing to give the panel and armrest its 'softness'

I'll have some more updates tomorrow...like the other panel and probably some new handles.

I've been hired out to make another set of panels by a guy on a miata forum and hes giving me a set OEM handles thats EXACTLY what I'm making so I may just scrap the ones I made...

Are you talking about the keyholes? Any car panel is going to have those plastic pop-screws and thats what these are. The pop-screw has 3 basic parts, the part taht goes into the door, an outer flange and an inner flange. What I did was drill a through hole so I could put the pin in the panel and then slide it down into place...its kinda hard to explain.

wait.... what happened to the bike?

It was stolen back in November...I never got around to making the thread with all the details...but here it is in a nutshell:

-Parents didnt know I had a bike again so I was renting a private, secure, storage unit to keep it. Unit had the bike, lift, stands, bunch-o-tools, leathers, helmets and my racing suit.
-Front-Counter guy, who sets up accounts, liked my bike...alil too much...and told some shady friends of his about it...he set them up with an entry code so they could steal it.
-Coming home from a ride one night, after just pulling in past the gate and waving to the gaurd, I took baseball bat to the helmet...and thats I remember.
-They cleaned out my storage unit, put the bike on a trailer and took it to Miami...guard noticed it leaving on a trailer, which had never happened before and decided to see if something was awry, and I was on the flat of my back out cold...
-What happened next is still up to debate but someone rode it, wrecked it and then they stripped it and left me with a twisted frame...
-I got the call around christmas that they found it, not exactly the gift I wanted...but the $32k I've gotten in insurance money sure helped...

Depends on whether or not I want to use the insurance money. I need money to pay for school and it'll proably take a good chunk of that $$$...

you have **** luck with vehicles by the way.

howd you destroy the car?

The car had low compression for awhile and I just tried to stay on top of keeping the oil topped off, etc but it finally gave out one day going to work and threw a rod in my 5th cylinder...

Nice work man it's coming out really nice what color are you going to wrap it in?

The main portion is going to be white vinyl, the armrests black and the factory top piece is already black. The speaker grill and ring's also black so it'll stand out nice against the white...

So, after I f*cked up my last handles, I thought I'd try a different approach. The ones before were flat, and didnt really do it for me, so I cranked this one out in an experiment...

Basic handle shape:

You sire, have inspired me to re-upholster my door skins this summer. This is how they sit now: (Stock speakers were 5.25's, and for some reason had a 4x6" cover laying flat, now I have 6.5s there). I will build an MDF ring for spacing and create a door skin with the correct size hole

wow...no updates in 11 days...I should :ban: myself :crap:

I've had 5 job interviews. 1 at a VERY nice shop down here (Blvd. Customs (http://blvdcustoms.com/)) that I'm really hoping I can get into. Other 4 have been at circuit city for a sales job in home entertainment. Why 4? I dunno...

Been meaning to get the new handles (just the handhold) redone since I don't like where it meets the door. Needs a little flare, IMO. And need to cut, what I call a "change holder" into the armrest to double as a second handle. If nothing interrupts me Wednesday, expect a second pair of handles and the start of the mold for the glass :)

Meh...lazy update...

Got woken up by the cleaning crew and decided to do a little work before taking a nap...

-Got the speaker holes cut-out
-Trimmed up the handle recess so the door release cup fits behind it
-Trimmed up the perimiter of the panel so it fits better and the door will actually close, lol
-Added a through hole so I can bolt the handle assembly directly to the door for extra pulling strentgh
-Added 2 keyhole-slots near speaker hole for further attachment...

-And I STILL need to copy all this to another hardboard do to the driver side

Still left:
-Mounting speaker ring
-Glassing
-Covering
-Attaching top piece
-Make mount for crossover in kickpanel
-Glass kickpanel
-Build enclosure/amprack for back deck
-Install Headunit (when it gets here), MB Q Components, JBL Px300.4 and 2 TangBand 8" W8-740C subs...
-wire, bump, and try not to screw up...

:woot: for more work!

Then, Circuit City called and offered me the job after 5 interviews...so, starting Monday its Home Entertainment sales

And then, I got a spot as a sponsor for www.caraudiojunkyard.com and am setting up a sort of storefront over there. So if you guys want some continually updates prices as well as some group buys...look it up

NEED OPINIONS!!!

Going to try something on the back piece of the armrest assembly...

Instead of a solid piece against the door, it would be 2. one at the left side of the inset handle, and one to the right of the inset handle. Behind and below the inset handle, it would be nothing...just air and an area for your hand to fit to pull the door...

follow?

I'm not creative at all really. I just noticed one day while sitting in traffic that I didnt have an armrest then said "wtf" so loud that the old lady in the minivan next to me rolled up her window
