6.7 cubes @ 31hz with 100sq.in. of port.

Still need to make another front for the double baffle, after that I'm going to round the port and all the edges of the box with my router and begin putting it together with wood glue and my pneumatic nail gun.

Very nice, the dowels won't hit the sub hopefully, right?

I hope to be making a similar box soon for the Blazer.

Bracing

SHiZNiLTi

very clean. what are the rods for exactly
They will prevent the box from flexing. I've built a box similar to this design shown above, but on a smaller scale and did not do any bracing and it flexed soo bad in the middle of the box that if I layed my my cell phone on the box it would bounce and do flips. With these (2) wooden dowels installed in the middle of the box it should cut down big time on flexing and make the bass tighter.

I havn't permanetly found a spot for them yet. When my BTL gets here I will be able to place them more accuratly.

Tape for holding the box together while I dry fit everything. I got lucky and all the cuts fit perfect. The dowels were the biggest ones I could find at the hardware store, they are 1".

I decided to place the sub on the front and double baffle it. I have another section of 1" dowel left so I may add some more bracing from top to bottom, think I need it?...

foil some PVC, stick it against the corner, clay the edges where it meets on the outside of the pvc/wood joint, and pour in resin. rounded corners >45*

mazdakid
01-21-2007, 08:32 AM
or you could just angle the box and pour resin in all the corners, thats how i just did my last box and it turned out pretty good, but didnt notice a difference with or without the resin

Actually, you don't want to use that much resin in one spot. When you pour on resin that thick, it tends to crack over time, especially in a corner.

Thanks for all the info on how to make resin corners, but I think I'll stick with the mdf 45.

I was planing on painting the port today, but the weather is really crappy!

It was nice a sunny this afternoon, then this happened...

true that. you can always mix the resin with a little saw dust to give the resin a little filler. it doesn't weaken the mix, it makes it denser and you end up using less resin that way.

Thanks, believe it or not this camera I use is about 6 years old. It's a Nikon Coolpix 995 3.2 megapixel. People allways get suckered into buying these new "hi-end" 5.0+ megapixel camera's without doing research on lens quality. You can pick this camera up on ebay for around $150 or so and I personally think it's better then most of the 5.0mp cameras sold in stores today. Macro mode is where this camera really shines.

Thanks, not sure when Ficaraudio will ship the sub, hopefully I will get it by Friday. I work 8-5 M-F, here's my tasklist...

Tonight I'm going to round the edges of the port and outside of the box.
Tuesday or Wendsday I'll probably make the double baffle that's going to cover the entire front of the box, I will also have to make a cutout for the port.
Thursday I will wood glue and nail the box together.
Friday I will sand and get most of the prep work done to paint the box.
Saturday - Sunday I will start the procedures of painting the entire box.

LOL I could see that happening, In my Macro mode it has this nifty feature that when you press the button half way down it will display some small red brackets on the LCD viewfinder which is telling you where it's focused in at. Release the button and press it again it will position the red brackets on a different area of the screen. I just press and release untill the red brackets are on what I want to focus in on. Does anyone know if newer cameras do this?

LOL LiL_KB, no I didn't give up. I wasn't at my house this weekend to work on it, but I did get alot done last night when I got home. I actually nailed and glued the entire box together and made a double baffle for it.

Tonight I plan on rounding some corners of the box and making the cutout hole for the 18" BTL.

I still need to prep the box by sanding and putting woodfiller / bondo on all of the cut edges. Once that is done I will primer it then start layering coats of black lacquer on it.

Sorry for no shinny box pics yet. Although I will post pics later this evening of what I complete tonight.

Didn't have a Jig, Home Depot didnt have any in stock and I didn't feel comfortable with the sting on the router's handle with a nail in the middle of the cutout hole tactic so I just used my jigsaw, prob my best jigsaw cutout though :D From seeing your perfect cutouts I think I may order a jasper jig on the net for future builds.

LOL, at first I was like wtf are you talking about "card game" then I remember the photobucket video on the other page I posted with the cat, you must have seen this video too... http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n228/SHiZNiLTi/?action=view&current=BL0W.flv

How you play blow, it's a rather simple game:

You start off with a deck of cards on a bottle.
You get 1 breath and have to blow a minimum of 1 card off the deck. If you cant get at least 1 card off you hafta take a shot.
If you blow all the cards off you have to take a shot.

The goal of the game is to blow as many cards off as possible without blowing the last card off. By blowing half of the cards off you raise the chances of the person next to you blowing them all off since there less cards to blow. Once it gets down to like 10 or less cards it gets tricky and takes alot of skill to just knock off one card off of the deck.

We also play kings...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_%28drinking_game%29

and moose which is what I excell in ...

looks small. I had 7.25 cubes for an 18" RE SX on 1000watts. It seems like you would need more room for a sub that outdoes a SX like its nothing.

Video (http://media.putfile.com/18--Fi-BTL) is up, posted at the top of the page, will post the photobucket version and youtube version in 5 min.

This is just an excursion video, I'll post up a flex video and video of flexing things around me like windwos to building and gas station roofs later. It's insaine how much effect this sub has on this around my car.

LOL, the guy in the video that drove up to me came from about 1/4 to 1/2 a mile away. He said that he was sitting at his dinner table trying eating and his window was vibrating. I tried to get the entire thing on tape, but only got the last half. At first he said what the hell is that and what are you doing. He was very impressed and a pretty cool guy be being resonable and not being a ****.

Here's what happens to gas stations when you pull up with a 18" BTL, the second gas stations roof was flexing and vibrating like crazy, never have I heard a roof flex soo loud. The windows of the building were rattling pretty good too. My video camera 6 years old and the mic kinda *****, but you get the idea...

LOL, I should, that would be a good comparison between my old R's and my new BTL.

The old R's were no joke with 1k rms on each, got a lil smelly though 0_o during that vid at the bank.

Although when I went to the gas station that I just recorded the BTL in action at the R's didn't come anywhere close to making the roof shake like the BTL does :D

Thanks, but I fcked up, I should have put it on the side triangle window so when the window flex's it would look just like the dust cap of the BTL when its pounding.

Nice!

Are you going to give a review of the BTL vs. other subs you've had in that car?

Also, it's amazing how bass travels...I would have expected that to travel up to 1 mile or MORE (since you had the sub in the open like that)....

I remember a longgggg time ago, I was testing out my Kicker Comp 15s on a PPI 150 x 2 amp (the white amps) and this dude pulls up mad as hell at me...his house was a good half mile away he said (I was in a big office building parking lot)...The Kicker is that I was all sealed up testing inside my car....

Well, the other subs I've had in this vehicle are a couple of MTX 9500 12's in 4.5cubes ported @ 38hz, JLW6v2 12's sealed and Type R 12's in 5cubes ported @34hz. I may write up a lil review, but the main comparision will be made on the type R's vs the BTL. The comparision will be a video review comparing the amount of flex and vibration on a banks front glass doors where my friend works, I'll park in the same spot and use the same song that I did when I made the video for the R's.

Ya I'd like to hear your MT18 too.

LOL, it's a very tingly feeling, If you relax your jaw your teeth chatter it's pretty cool. I also like the feeling in the back of your throat when your trying to swallow your spit and it's hard to do. Normal breathing is also made much harder, when you breath through your nose you can see the side of your nose flaping back and forth, it tickles. I've never been exposed to any 148db on up vehicles so all of these feelings are very new to me.

Well it's only been installed for a few days and I'm allready getting used to the pressure of it, but everyonce in a while a song will generate a tone that will hurt my ears and at that point I turn it down. I don't see myself getting to the point where that certain tone won't hurt so that I will not get used to.

I'll allways be stiving for more bass since I'm a pretty big bass head, but on the other hand if I had (6) of these 18's pounding with a proper install I'd probably say thats enough bass and be satisfied there.

As of now I'm stoked and impressed with just having a single 18" BTL with the ability of still using my back seats and being able to see out of my rear window.

My future plans are to experiment with it in another box design and to build up my front stage.

Does your CD skip at all? If not what model/brand do you have? Mine skips badly and I'm certain it's the CD as the radio still works fine at the higher SPL levels...

You've probably tried most/all of these but I've tried:

sub up/port back
sub back/port up
sub back/port back

To the ear and my meter sub back is louder by consistently 1 db...

I've tried the MT 18 in a 3, 7.5 and now 6 cube box...

LOL, ya it skips on things like 30hz to 50hz sweeps, but does ok on all music, I put a lil dynamate on the bottom of it, lol probably didn't help much, but was worth a try. It's a Premier 680.

Do you have a blazer also?

Ya sub back port back seems to be a tad louder to the ear, but I hate the vibration noise I hear from the rear window/inside panel when I do that. So sub forward port forward is what I run and it prevents any intereor vibration noise and helps alot with vibrations from the outside. The next box I do I want to try sub up port to the back or passenger side. I know it's not important, but out of which sub/port position did the bass sound cleaner and louder when standing in front of your vehicle about 10 ft?

I have a Toyota Rav4. I was going to run to Costco in a few here so let me take some pics...nothing special...I like my stuff to look stock from the outside...

I have tried sub back/port to passenger side with a Tumult 15 -- that sounded really good..but then again that could have just been the Tumult :)

Hmm...I'm curious as well...to be honest everytime I get out to listen to it, I'm still shocked at how loud it is....but I think sub up is the cleanest sounding outside wise (but this was my sub up/port back combo)...I think it's because the sub is playing into an unobstructed area (but you have this already in you front firing setup)

Do you ride around with your back seat folded down?

Maybe we can do some more testing and compare notes?

On the side triangles, rear sides and back window it's stock privacy glass with a layer of 5% limo and a layer of 40% Huper Optik {80% heat rejection film}. On the front two doors it's 5% limo with (2) layers of 40% Huper Optik {80% heat rejection film} the Huper Optik is used on the $1000 tint jobs for Schumacher Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale, AZ - I used to work there so I got the hookup. My entire front windshield is just basic 35% film with a 7" 20% visor on top.

Since I had stock privacy glass on all the rear sides and back it didn't make a difference what type of film I put on because layering film only brings out the original 1st layer's color. For example the Merceded Huper Optik film is greenish/blue morror type film, but since I layed 5% Black limo tint down 1st then layered on a couple sheets of the greensih/bule Huper film it doesnt look blue only black because thats the fist sheet that was layed down and thats what you see from the outside.

See how the triangle and rear sides match perfect in the image below? That's the stock privacy film with limo and huper layered on it. Then on the front sides it's a basic 5% limo with (2) huper sheets layerd on it, then the front windshield is just 35%. There is a little bit of color difference with the black between the front doors and rest of the vehicle, but other then that its pretty even, another thing that I did was paint the rear pillars black, the dealer did that for free before the warrenty was over....

sometimes my CD skips as well, im running 2 15" Mags sealed right now, plan on running them ported, subs up ports back in my 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee. My hatch already rattles like no other, its not deadened tho, if I faced subs/port to the rear, the rattles would kill me, lol.

Not at all the ipod will work perfect without skipping, I use a Monster 2.5mm heaphone jack to dual RCA cable from my old school IBM laptops PCMCIA Soundblaster 24bit sound card which is inputed into the AUX jack in the back of the Prioneer headunit and get no skipping at all and the SQ is pretty **** good, but CD is still a little better. I was driving down this major road bumping some young jeezy today at pretty much full volume and the closet car to me was about 4-5 cars length in front of me we were traveling about 40-50mph and then all of a sudden the car in front of me pulled over to the side of the road to a stop and as I passed by the lady in the car held two hands up in the air like she was trying to say WTF. This is the 1st time I've made a moving vehicle pull off of the road due to bass. Times like that I wish I had a custom license plate that says "2LOUD4U" I'm coming to relize I need to pay attention to my surroundings when bumping it that loud.

I think the album is Thug Motivation 101.

1st song: Young Jeezy track 19 Air Forces
2nd song: Young Jeezy track 17 That's How Ya Feel
3rd song: Paul Wall track 9 Internet Goin' Nutz

I allways put this song in when people demo my setup because it starts of with what sounds like the song's main bass line, but it isn't that loud. While the softer bass is playing I say something like it's hella loud huh and people are liek "meh it's ok then after 15 secs or so BOOM, it goes into full excursion and it kicks in hard and low and suprises the hell outta them.

I know, I've completely gone off my tasklist with painting it.

I kinda want to build another box before I decide to do my glossy black paint process which takes like 7 days to complete. Once I test out both box's I will choose my favorite and paint that one.

Right now my box is tuned at 32hz with 100sq.in. of port, but sounds more like it's tuned at 36hz because it gets hella loud between 35-40hz and doest have as much oomph at the 30hz range as I want. I know for th DB's you want it loud at 36-40hz range, but I want to try a design that will really hits on the 28hz to 33hz range focusing on killer lows.

Here's my dims of my current box...

Outter Dims:
37x26x19

My Cut's:
Bottom and Top: 37 x 26
Right Side: 24.5 x 17.5
Left Side: 25.25 x 17.5
Front: 30.5 x 17.5
Back: 37 x 17.5

Port:
18.75 x 17.75
5 x 17.5

The sub takes up .26

So thats about 6.6 cubes after sub and port, tuned to 32hz with 100sq.in. of port right?

Any ideas on what to do for my next design? I want it to really hit stong on the 28hz to 30hz range focusing on killer lows. I'm thinking of doing a design where I can have one big straign port out the side of the box and have the sub fire up, the sub would be located close to the port.

my 15" BTL was tuned to like 28 at one point....got ungodly low and still was loud as balls in the 35-40 hz range.

5 x 17.5

Have you tried playing with tuning your HU or EQ (if you have one?)?

I know I wasn't super impressed with the lowend on my current box but then I started fine tuning it and bam...it sounds so much better to me now....just took a bit of tweaking...

Oh ya I spent a couple hours tweaking all settings on HU and amp and setting the gains just right, lol I probably spent too much time on it. There really isnt much wrong with how it hits the lows now, I'm just nit picking at what I hear.

I've been thinking of getting a Bass Reconstruction Processor, they have em on ebay for like $60 sometiem, anyone ever try one of these out, I listen to alot of rock too and this would be cool if it could add some 30hz boost to Lar's dual kick drums from Metallica.?

if you ever get the chance try this.... i was driving by a place where they do oil changes and whatnot, much like a meinike (spelling) and they have small computer monitors in the garage. From about 500 ft i could see the computer screen turn to complete mush every time the bass hit from my car. Same thing with a security TV inside a gas station when i was parked outside getting gas
