BEFORE I START I WANT TO SAY THAT I ENCOURAGE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I CAN DO TO BE BETTER.

Well i was contacted by a local who had heard about some of the work i had been doing. It required very little and all i was really doing was hooking up systems. No fabrication no nothing. Pretty simple to me. So he calls me up and says he has a job for me. I said ok what is it? He made me come over to see for my self i get there and he has a few cars in the drive so i figure its gonna be one of them... Takes me into the garage and shows me a 65 mustang that hes redoing. He told me what he wanted done and i said well im not sure if i can do all this fabrication, false floor in the trunk, all out new kicks with speaker mounts added, put a radio in a glove box that didnt exist. I am about half way done with the car now. I have the trunk completly done, which was a first time carpeting for me and i think it came out fantastically and so does he. So onto the kicks. I got the kicks from his car which were first of all HUGE and second of all torn to ****. so i came on line and started learning.
Heres what i recieved.

Here is the tape i used (2 Layers i had issues with the tape later on )

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Mustang%20Project/Mustang017.jpg

Here is after 3 coats of resin and matt ( i later learned i was using the ****** matt and added a layer of random stranded matt)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Mustang%20Project/Mustang036.jpg

Here is after sanding and cutting (ROUGHLY) the new kicks.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Mustang%20Project/Mustang038.jpg

I still have to finish sanding, fleece it, build the speaker mounts, add body filler, sand my *** off, prep for paint and then paint. All which will be done tomarrow hopefully.

I just want to make sure no one thinks this is a finished product. I would say i am almost half way done. I still have a good half hour of sanding on both and cleaning up the edges where my cutting was bad.
If any one wants to see the trunk ill post that too..... THATS MY FAVORITE PART partly cause its done and i know what it looks like

Better ensure those kick panels are fully 'glassed. 65-66 Mustangs are notorius for leaking cowls and leaking around the rear windows. The cowls weren't painted and thus rust out. When it rains it will leak into the floor boards. To check this pull up the carpet and pour a buck of water down the cowl. If it leaks, it may cause the kick panels to prematurely mess up due to water damage. If your cowl is bad enough and it rains hard you will put your feet in 1-2" of water the next morning.

Why didnt you fiberglass over the holes you made for the bracing and the gas tank neck ?
It wouldve looked a lot nicer than just having that big chunk cut out.

jeeper07

owner of the car said thats how he wanted it. so thats how it is, but i agree that would have looked much better

So you guys who have experience with fiberglassing, Do you think i should do fleece over the panel or just put another layer of just resin down then body filler and start sanding or do you think the fleece is a better idea?

Are you just rebuilding the kick panels themselves with no speakers ? If so , there really is no reason to use fleece . If you want to strengthen them a little more just add another layer of mat and then start with the filler . :)

jeeper07

i am putting speakers.

Well then , I would have gone a completely different route . I would have made a floor mold instead of using the factory kicks . But that's beside the point .

Once you get your rings positioned the way you want . Stretch with your mold cloth ( fleece ) then resin . Might need a layer of mat for strength , then filler :)

6.5 inch coaxils and yes im mounting to the new pannel

ramos

Gonna need a lot more room then my brother as most coaxials are meant for ib or free air in doors and rear decks :)

now i already know how im covering the gas tank and 2 braces in the trunk. I am also building an amp rack in the left quater panel area. What i dont know is how to cover the 2 wheel well areas. A spare tire goes where the square on the right is so its hard to cover. I was gonna paint them black but that would look horrible. WHAT TO DO ???

jeeper07
01-18-2007, 10:38 PM

How much more gear needs to go in there? Do you want stuff to be hidden or for show?

jeeper07
01-19-2007, 01:49 AM
i dont want to make any false fronts or anything if thats what you mean. If it were my car i would definantly do that with the amp, but im not gettin paid any where near enough to do all that. I just need a way to cover up the wheel wells, i might fiberglass something up, but id rather not

Rictamilk
01-19-2007, 01:55 AM
What you did with the trunk is great, it looks 5000x better i like it alot

evan
01-19-2007, 01:56 AM
The quick and dirty would be to pull the false floor out, carpet the sides, and then slide the floor back in.

P.S. You should paint the MDF black on the sides by the gas filler tube and those other two cutouts.

jeeper07
01-19-2007, 01:56 AM
thanks man... but that is not even half way done yet... wait til you see the finished product... i just have to decided what im gonna do first

oh its not even bolted down that was just the test fit. I need to paint that part and a couple others, i also have to take it all back out so that i can decide what im gonna do with the sides and back, i might also do some fiberglass for the gas tank so you cant see anything but that will all be a while until it is done because i am workin on like 4 different projects in the car at the same exact time.

Are the coaxials going to be mounted on axis?

ramos
01-19-2007, 08:45 AM
Is the owner concerned with quality of the sound , or does he just want something to listen to ? I'm asking cause your gonna have trouble getting enough room in the kick area for coaxials to function properly . If he just wants something to listen to , then it's a different story :)

jeeper07
01-19-2007, 11:53 AM
not that worried about it but i hope to make it sounds the best possible.
