I began it last night. Started out by designing the box. My goal was somewhere around 2cuf sealed, with the front glassed with the subs recessed into the box so that the seat scoots all the way back to the box. My design came up to be 2.17before sub/recess displacement. That should put me around 1.7-1.9cuf after displacement, sealed. should sound nice if all goes well. Will be getting 200wrms per sub with factory electrical. I am going to run 1 run of 1/0 power/ground. In a few weeks, i'll get some 10" rings, and glass the front over. Box is 58.375" wide. 16.125" tall. 2.25" deep at the top, and 9.25" deep at the bottom. Subs will be recessed a little over 1/4".

Here is how the amp placement will go.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n238/jbibby8218/Polks/box/amp.png

Okay guys. The frame is done, and the peice that the amp will mount to is also done. Tomorrow after its all dry, i am going to sand it all down pretty smooth, and build the front/back and sides of the amp rack. I flipped the script up on that. It was just going to be the board mounted on 2x4s and hidden under the seat. Now i am going to build sides/front/back on it so if anyone were to look at it, it would be smooth under there. It will also be glassed, and painted the same color as the truck/box. No one fret the edges that dont line up, because this is just the frame for a recessed glassed front. When the fleace gets stretched accross, i will fix those edges to make them flow with the rest of the install. It's all drying right now, and i am going to test fit it as soon as it is all dry. Pics...

Right after i woke up, and begun. Obviously before i made any cuts. :)

how are you gunna finish the bottom edge b/c right now if you put the face on then there will not be a very good fit on the bottom. Only the edge of the bottom piece will be touching the face. When i built a wedgebox I had to do an angle cut on that bottom piece so it was flush with the face.

Okay, So i only worked a half day today, so i could get some work done on my install. I for the most part finished the amp rack today. I got the sides finished. The final plans for it are to get some 1/8 paneling for a home, and add front & back piece to it Then it will be glassed over smooth, and painted to match the box/truck. I didn't do anything to the box. I am going to get some wood putty, and fill in the edges that didn't line up right. I jsut got a call from work that we have to redo our inventory we jsut did last saturday. Yay for working a 20hour shift. Anyways, pics...

It just happens sometimes, I think it's due to the screw not completly following the path of the predrilled hole. Besides, it's just an amp rack and doesn't require alot of strength. You do good work, keep it up.

try moving the outer screws in an inch or so. that usually help stop splitting on my boxes

Also, it will be running in 4ohm stereo. About half what it's rated for. It should barely get warm. Not to mention, it hardly ever gets driven more than 20minutes at a time. If i drive anywhere farther than 20mins, i take the Honda.

Immacomputer

Use as few screws as possible and that will help splitting. Pre-drilling is not the answer to keep the wood from splitting as people here seem to believe. For the amp rack, it probably would have been best to only use one screw per side right in the middle. That will reduce splitting and when the glue sets, the wood will not move at all.

bibby
01-09-2007, 01:57 AM
Ya. Oh well, i think i sealed the splits up enough that i should be good on the rack, and the box.

Ya. Oh well, i think i sealed the splits up enough that i should be good on the rack, and the box.

You screw, you learn, and then get clamps. ;)

You should be fine though on those splits and it really should not hurt anything.

All all of my drilling/screwing is done. The next thing i have to do is add a front and back piece to the amp rack which will be done out of 1/4" paneling. I will use paneling nails to attach it to the rack. along with the bond o tite of course. Then glassed over smooth.

As far as the MDF splitting, with such a small side 2 screws would have been adequate. I usually try to stay within 3" of the outside corner, and 8-12" apart. The screws are only there to hold the box together while the glue dries for us lazy people. I can build a box a lot faster that way.

Excellent work so far, looks great. Glad to see more people taking the time and doing it right. (Removing seats and working with an unobstructed area.)

Good luck with the long shifts ... I always hate the 20+ hours, however the $ is usually worth it in the end.

Nah, it will have a front, and a back peice on it that sits flush with the hump. I think it will "hug" that hump enough it wont move. Now the box will be bolted down.

So i decided that since i don't work sat and sunday, and i should get the other lights in monday, that i would go ahead and put in what i've got. Then monday, i'll throw the other lights in. Here is how it sits now. I am going to take it out, and wash/wax the truck, then put it back in, then pull it up in the garage until Monday.

I've washed the truck aswell, it and looks a **** ton better. i'm uploading those pics.

After i finish the grill, my honda really needs some love. But new tails, and a roll pan, intake, headers/exhaust. This spring, it will be getting a new factory hood. No cowl or none of that ****, along with all the molding removed, repainted back the factory red, and rhino-lined.
