Well I'm going to be completely building a HT setup over the next year, and I've got an idea for a sub.

Mach 5 audio MJ-18" in 8^3 tuned to 18hz being powered by this plate amp:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-752

Of course this beast would be built with a handle or two with casters so I can move it around.

Thoughts?

I was just going by the specs that M5A supplies for the woofer, but anythings possible. lower 20hz would probably be better for movies. Rattle yo nuts n stuff

Also, polyfill? It seems everything in HT has polyfill in it. I will def. use it in the surround/center speakers to keep cancellation down, but is it necessary in the woofer box?

30hz for a HT sub? That would be **** for anything but music. I would only tune to 20 or 18. You haven't experienced HT unless you've felt a sub that has in room extension down to 15hz with authority.

Can't have everything perfect. IMO the sacrifice is going to be heavily outweighed by the gains. In this case sub bass frequencies that will rattle my NEIGHBORS nuts :veryhapp: :veryhapp:

Then again that doesnt make happy neighbors. So ill just have to tone it down a little :up2somet:

Thats why its going to be built with wheels. Not to mention I've moved many filing cabinets as we have 4 in our house. I also used to work installing cubicals, offices, and office furniture. Weight isn't an issue. Knowing how to correctly handle it is the key, which is really easy.

It certainly isn't going to be ANYWHERE near the end all of HT subwoofers.

Thanks. I really didn't expect people to think it was, nor was I ever thinking that myself. It was a title that would get people to read it, give answers and suggestions. I clearly got answers and suggestions, and I'm closer to getting a very nice sub setup. I would rather build my own and have it kick ***, that way I'd be a lot more proud of my system than running to the store and buying some pre-made sub.

Considering I will be building this for less money than some subwoofers alone cost, that is also a huge plus.

Gotta love know-it-all mods and their contributions.

I've contributed more here than you could ever dream of doing yourself.

Whether I should care, or more importantly, you should care... is besides the point.

I don't dream of contributing as much as you have. I was stating the fact that stupid comments are worthless.

I did an aura 1808 for a ht sub once... polyfill in the box was no match, ripped it up and threw it out the vent in a wicked display of power.. within 10 seconds I think the box was pretty much empty :) Box was 6qf with about a 24x6x whatever it was slot port. Man that sub could move some air! Had around 1200 clean going to it. Needless to say, my lil 12" JBL 250P model northridge rocks my current setup with more than enough power, depth and clarity for the 18x18 room it is in. Sub is very impressive for the size and price. Just watched Blade 2 last night. Tore it up killer!!! shakes every picture in the house and most of my tools in the garage without breaking a sweat.

I have that plate amp, very good amp by the way, makes my ED flatcone wang hard in a small sealed box.

Really wanna open it up, put it in 2.0 ported at 20 hz, but the cops have already paid me a visit here, don't need any more complaints.

My neighbors were complainers.... But when they realized how loud 703's and a 90 degree out of phase lobe sounds in their apartment with some Bolt Thrower on, they stopped calling.....

Thats good to hear. Thanks.

I was kinda weary of it because of the price, wattage, and options.

Fs becomes less relevant when dealing with large enclosures or running IB. Its the port tuning that's important in this case.

The MJ-18 is a great driver and can give you decent output. My recommendations for 250 litre 18Hz tune suits the MJ, but will also fit for other 18's should you decide to change out for somethnig more expensive (I say expensive because everything has diminishing returns).

I'd suggest going with a Sonotube - 20" in diameter and about 52" high. 6" port tuned to 18Hz. Its quick and easy to build, plus lightweight so you won't need casters. Get yourself an EQ if you don't already have one.

Best,
Mark

I'd really like to do an IB instillation of a MJ-18 in my attic, firing into the living room. It should get pretty loud in my little house.
