I'm looking for a Head Unit for my daughter's car that will control her IPOD. I would like her to be able to control and display it's functions with the head so she keeps her eyes on the road, not the IPOD. Do you have any suggestions in the UNDER $150.00 catagory? Thanks!

For under $150, there's not a whole lot of options as far as a totally new head unit..

Maybe something like this, instead?

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-HF3uy6X7wKX/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?wm=fp&I=108DP1US

I've heard they actually work pretty well, but i'm not too experienced in them myself.

Some head units say they're Ipod compatible, but the actual function of it is slow, horrible, and nearly impossible to control. I think the Pioneers are pretty good, however. This one, I believe, let's you control all the IPOD functions from the head- unit pretty effortlessly, with the addition of a $50 Ipod adapter.

Can probably buy both on ebay for about $170 total.

the new alpine 9856 is supposed to be full speed ipod control, alot of people don't like it because of the lack of functions in the eq area but it's a good basic HU with the best ipod control. It can be found for $200 new on the internet or less used.

I like the HK piece. I'm assuming it just hooks into the existing head unit? I'll definately be checking into that more. The Pioneer looks good too, especially for the price... Any more suggestions?

monstercable makes adapters for a lot of factory radios

and kenwood and alpine both have adapters, but the 1st generation alpines, and the kenwoods are really slow from what i hear

She has a 1993 Lebaron so it's probably better to just replace the entire unit. I looked into the HK piece, but since her car doesn't have a center console (for the remote to mount) it's a no go. I'm going to look around online some more. Thanks for the info!

a lot of decks are ipod ready, but for kenwood, jvc, pioneer, just to name a few, you're going to need a separate module in order to control it from the hu. they are about $50 extra.

Anybody try one of these yet?

if thats what you are looking for, then go for it. i wouldn't want to buy anything insignia though when you can get a nice alpine or pioneer for a little bit more.

just get a alpine so you wont have to mess with another mod. you need to make it work.

the alpine has one cable, from the ipod to radio.. done.

You wanted to keep your daughter's eyes on the road but she would eventually have to look at the stereo to change tracks or folders. You can get an FM transmitter for the ipod to play the ipod's music through the radio. This way, she can hold the ipod unit up instead of looking down at the stereo.

no. ^^^

most people are already used to glancing at the radio.

if she has to hold and play with an ipod while driving. thats even worse.

that's probably the way to go, honestly

keep in mind most of the people on this forum are more concerned about the quality of their stereos than most people are with their mortgages and jobs, and they might not get the no-name best buy brand, where 99% of people wouldn't even know the difference, let alone care

that deck's cheap, has a cd player, and needs to added hardware, seems like the one to get

How about this one:

Like others have suggested, look at the Alpine 9856. This deck offers the full speed ipod connection and will be relatively easy for your daugther to use. While many of us have been dissapointed with Alpines recent line-up, virtually all will agree that they offer the fastest and cleanest overall ipod experience. And if that is your major reason for the head unit, then you really should take a look at this deck.

Peripheral Electronics offers OEM and Aftermarket iPod integration for tons of applications. Basically any aftermarket unit with a cd-changer control can be hooked up to an iPod with one of the Connex2Car adapters. They're available for around $50 new at best buy

Check here: http://peripheralelectronics.com/prodGrid.asp?category=iPod%20Solutions

Aftermarket HU adapters are at the bottom of the page.

Is there anything else I need to buy with this unit or is it ready to go out of the box? Seems nice, plus it had HD Radio which I know she will like. Crutchfield has one in the Bargin Bin for $179, I might have to go for that one. Thanks again!

Unfortunately, and to your point about the Alpine having HD radio, while it is HD Ready it will not play hd radio without an expensive add on. The adon for the ipod is inexpensive however and generally goes for around $30.

Depending on her age, she may be much more used to glancing at and manipulating an Ipod than a car radio...

Good point. She's 16 and has been driving for about 6 months...

You do not have to have a CDA-9856. The less expensive CDE-9852 will control your iPod through FullSpeed as well.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-MCiFY6FAzc2/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=500CDE9852
You can find them other places online for less, that is retail price (Crutchfield is an authorized Alpine dealer). And yes, Fullspeed is the least expensive and best way to go. It's worth the extra couple bucks over the 150$ you were planning on spending.

i still say alpine/full speed cable is your best bet.

hd radio is a wast of money, imo.

Fullspeed is very easy to use. Either way there is a slight possibility for a distraction, but personally I feel it is better to use an interface then have it in your hand. What happens if shes using an FM modulator and drops the iPod on the floor and reaches to pick it up?

well i know that jesen has an ipod line. they have a Jlink cable and then your good to go. charges ipod and solid connection. also has a remote which are easy to get used too and much better to use then turning nobs on the deck. also they have cheap flip screens with ipod interface. around 350 i think. cheap for a flip screen.

also a great stocking stuff idea. if you go with the jessen or the alpine with the cables, they make ipod cup holders. it is a molding that fits most cup holders and has a little stand to hold the ipod up and makes room to plug the cable in the bottom. i think it is a cool little idea. look for um

I had a P4500MP, and loved it. VERY reliable unit. Never had a single problem with it.

I had to sell my CD7000 but was able to convince the wife to let me get something down market. Here is what I got that will control my Ipod:

http://www.cardomain.com/item/KENKDCMP632U

It is $120 plus shipping, free wiring kit, free dash kit and it will connect to the Ipod as well as a USB drive. The only asterisk is that it will not play songs from the I-tunes.

For the money, this is one of the best Ipod deals out there.
