Is there anyway to hook up a car subwoofer (Ascendant) to my home receiver when it just has a mono plug? Or do I need to buy one from a store that has a built-in amp?

Receiver is usually unpowered on the sub output....

So you need:

Receiver (RCA OUT) -> AMP (RCA IN) -> SPEAKER

But, you need a 120 Volt amp not a 12 volt amp, and you might need to have a crossover and proper amp to run correct impedence....

Dayton sells a 240 watt amp for $100. I ordered one yesterday to power to my $25 eD sub
