Sony and Kenwood both used to make models like you're describing. JVC also made a head unit that blacked out when off, but it didn't flip. All had problems with reliability.

Wasn't the Kenwood line called MASK, or something similar?

I had the Kenwood eXcelon KDC X879 and I loved it. When off, the keypad flips up and hides everything. Cool thing also is that if you really want to take the faceplate off, you can! I've never experienced any problems with it.

Yes.

I had the original Mask, and it was absolutely horrible. Horrible.

It was in the shop more than it was in my car....literally.

In 6 months it was in the shop getting fixed 5 times.

The JVC was called the EL Kamelon.
Panasonic also had a blacked out faces touch screen h/y a couple years back, they had quite a wide vareity of models with that option
