the width of that box is 38" and my trunk can fit 36", so my question is, can i just make it 36"? will if affect anything besides the cubic feet?

If you really don't care about the change, just add 2" to either the depth or height. Simply taking 2" of the width will make a bit of difference to both net volume and tuning, but if you add the 2" to either height or width, you'd be ok. Its not going to be exact by any means nor recommended but your ears wont be able to tell the difference...
