have a few (80+) pics of my latest buildup for a forum member. he wanted it double paneled in the front to hold in his massive sub (the re destroyer 15) and 4.5 cubes tuned in the mid 30's.
im slowly, but surely falling in love with that 13 ply birch plywood. its quite a bit easier to work with than MDF.

less mess, and a ton lighter.

pics coming soon

so in what ways is birch better than MDF? is it stronger, easier to work with, or cheaper? i havent really gave any second thought to different woods, but am curious how it compares to 3/4" MDF

its much much stronger, and much, much lighter. much less subsceptible to flex, and it has that (imo) please stain me instead of carpet me look to it. beyond that it is much easier to work with, but it splinters. It has its pros, and that splintering thing is one of the 2 cons.

the other is that it costs about twice as much,

this break I'm probably going to build myself a new box and will probably use this same material. do you think it'll be easy to carpet? it'll probably be the same for mdf I believe. I like to carpet my boxes vs painting them

a little glue action

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d177/iamamp3pimp/Worklogs/bolognablake/Picture220.jpg

first baffle is atached!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d177/iamamp3pimp/Worklogs/bolognablake/Picture221.jpg

second lines up real clean

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d177/iamamp3pimp/Worklogs/bolognablake/Picture222.jpg

the only true way to glue 2 baffles together. there is no other way to do it correctly imo than to use enough glue to cover the entire surface

The peice of wood and holds the sub, when the basket gets really close to the edge like that, about 1" top and bottom, would it be a good idea to double te wood on that side?

iamamp3pimp
11-14-2006, 09:39 PM
if you are asking the front baffle, on this one its double baffeled, if you are asking abut the top/bottom, nah, its not necessary at all.

Jared530
11-14-2006, 09:41 PM
Ok, so is the reason for the second peice of wood is for....xtra support and less flex? also how does rubbing glue over the surface of the wood and then sanding help? juss asking questions so my next box doesnt turn out crappy like the last one. lol .

iamamp3pimp
11-14-2006, 09:42 PM
nah i put glue all over one piece, and attached a second piece to it.

sometimes you see people puting a little glue between 2 panels, i like to use as much as i can.

Chevyaudio
11-14-2006, 09:45 PM
looks nice...I only have one complaint. If you are going to use wood as nice as Birch, why use screws. It would of looked so much cleaner with brads. Other than that nice.
