So i got my gti the other day and wanted to do a 3way up front and a sub in the back. I need help with a 3 way system up front. The car came with a 6.5, 4, and 1" tweeter and thats not cutting it for me. I would like input and any opinions would be great. I really want this to be a SQ car.

Well, I had a shop owner try to sell me MMATS Pro 641 for $600.00 AFTER I told him that I was interested in the MUCH more expensive Morel Elates ($1,500.00) that he also sells. (How often does THAT happen?) His words were "they should charge twice as much for these things".

I have never heard them and likely never will becasue MMATS is most active in the Southeast and very rare out here on the left coast.

Here is a link to an online retailer that sells them under $500.00: http://tinyurl.com/ewjas

And here is a link to the manufacturer's web site:
http://www.mmatsproaudio.com/separates.htm

I went to the dealer locator on there and was so screwed up in Firefox (their web site kinda sux) so I took the liberty of copying/pasting the dealer info for Virginia to clean it up...

Thanks Rochambeau for your help, not looking for 4 ways up front. I want to put the 3 ways in the stock locations.

I've never heard the Mmats components. I have used their amps for years with great results - but I have always gone with more mainstream speakers. I've heard good things about Mmats subs.

What about the imaging factor? The 6.5 is placed right next to my hip, i think the 4" and the tweeter are in good locations.

If you want to worry alot about imaging, then stock locations may not always be best. I think that rainbow set will be a great drop-in-plug-and-play set. It will probably sound pretty good, not a competition setup, but very good for daily driving.

Hybrid Audio L3, CDT M6 and DRt-26S. Its an awesome sounding setup but you need about 200-250rms per channel. You could go CDT CL-4, M6 and DRT-26s.

So you want a passive 3 way comp set to replace your existing stock speakers for $250?? The L3's alone are $250 and must be run actively. What do you have for processing?

I am looking to go passive so i can keep my stock HU, i like the fact that the car has a built in 6disc changer that can play mp3's and the steering wheel controls. So i really wouldnt want to use my alpine 9855, and im going to run them off my orion 8004.

If keeping stock HU, consider one of the "OEM-integration" units that are coming out these days. They are designed to undo all the evils that OEM manufacturers do to the signal in order to hide the poor quality of stock systems. Even if you have to dial back your speaker choice (eg: 2-ways) to squeeze one of those units into your budget, my guess is that the end sound will be better than using the uncorrected signal.

Finally, I don't have the specs/features on the 9855 but the 9856 has the ability to retain the steering wheel controls. Course that doesn't include a changer like your stock unit.
