I'm not sure exactly where to post this, but I figured here might be ok.

What is the purpose of white, pink, and brown noise?

I know this doesn't answer exactly what you asked but your question had me hunting around and I found this.

Interesting. I didn't even know there were more beyond pink and white.

One use of white noise is to set up your home theater to be "reference" level.

You bust out a dB meter and play white noise through the whole system. Then you adjust the levels settings such that, at least in theory, your dvds should play back at the "correct" volume level. Correct meaning what the dvd producers say the correct volume level is for watching the movie.

Also, don't you use white noise when tweaking a system with an RTA? Assuming your mic is perfect (or your RTA is calbrated for its error) white noise should look like a flat line when played a perfectly flat system.
