question about preformatted text?

don't know if this is the right place for this post, but I didn't want to clutter up the lounge with it...

is there any way to insert the html tag "pre" to have your spaces count as spaces?

i.e

if i wanted to make a pyramid i would put 3 spaces then an i than 3 spaces, and so on..like this

--oo--
-ooo-

and so on. i know there's the html tag "<pre>" that makes spaces count as spaces..just wondering..
