For a receiver.
I have heard that sony has pretty good receivers, but I havent heard anything about onkyo.

Both companies offer very good Receivers. Did you have any particular models in mind?

Crutchfield is having a sale.

Hmm, both have some nice features. I'd do the Sony if I was worried about movies and hooking it to an HDTV (HDMI switching is nice).
Onkyo probably has a better amplifier stage in thiers and would be my choice if I wanted a lot of music played through it.

Yes they are great...
For me to POOP ON....
No but seriously if you are looking for some good stuff a little higher than entry level they both wouldn't be bad... I would almost go with the Sony over the Onkyo...

I have always used Sony receivers and have always liked them...

I was also looking at the yamaha rxv559
And I know B&W loves yamaha...
The sony caught my eye because of the hdmi

how about marantz ?
Some of Marantz's older gear is killer...as for the new stuff, not too sure.

I've got one thats a little bit older, not sure on how old or the model #, I'll check later today.

wow i have been out of it a while, since when is onkyo even comparable to sony?
a few years ago onkyo's basic line, not to mention the Integra line of amps were comparable to sony's ES line and all other sony's were ****, when did this change?
07-31-2006, 10:13 PM
It didnt change. I sell sony recievers and gererally speaking they are gutless ****. Im just starting to look at new recievers and I am looking at Onkyo, Marantz, Denon and Yamaha. Harmon/Kardon is nice as well but Im just not a fan of their sound. One thing is for certain, I refuse to buy anything not high current

I'd rather run Pioneer than Sony. I have a Pioneer right now and a Denon for my whole house music. Denon and H/K FTW.
Onkyo > Sony

Okay well I just ordered that onkyo from crutchfield.
They dont even go for that cheap on ebay after shipping, and since they had free shipping and i get the full warrenty I couldnt pass it up.

I think you should be happy at that price :)

Okay now the only decision I have to make is whether to use digital coax or the optical output from my soundcard to the receiver.
Any big differences between the two?
08-02-2006, 06:53 PM
Well if you want to be a true audiophile with this, then you want digital coax. But.... at the same time you want a noisy PC as far away as possible, and long opticals are cheaper :)
Either way you'll be fine.
08-02-2006, 08:06 PM
Well its not going to be that far away, id say around 3 feet at most.
