View Full Version : My first box........Turned out better than i thought

Well today i made most of my first actual box. Its better than i expected. I was ready for the worst. The cuts are only off by a tid bit. Ill get better at using a circular saw and a guide. Me and my friend did what we have in about 3 and a half hours. All i have to do tommorow is attach the top(baffle) and silicone everything.

Heres the baffle resting on the box with subs mounted in holes.

looks good to me!

are they going to be seperate chambers?

espguitarist91
07-28-2006, 12:21 AM
no shared. Is that bad? I dont plan on blowing any anytime soon. I might brace it in the middle. Its 4.9 net.

xluben
07-28-2006, 12:23 AM
yeah, dividers would do double duty (bracing, blown sub protection). i think they'd be the smartest way to do it, and not that hard either.

More cuts to screw up on though:(
My saw skills are yet to be 'lite. Maybe later. I got time. Ill see if it flexes at all.

Im debating wheteher i sould carpet it or not. Im most likely going to screw up the carpeting. I have no idea how, and those tutorials confuse the hell out of me. Do they have the carpet i would need at Walmart? and how much is it?

once you put it together, how you going to take it back apart to put bracing or dividers :crap:

as expecting my cuts to be about an inch off, but i guess theyre not that bad. I glued all the seams and tommorow im going to glue and screw the top and and silicone all the seams. Should sound awesome......i hope. I countersunk the screws too.......not as big of a pain that everyone said it was.

Don't go this far and not carpet it... It's like leaving the project 90% complete. Put all the seams @ the bottom and you should be just fine.

you can try your luck on home depot's cuts, a few times ive used them they have been right on pretty much, just be careful who you pick and tip the guy before cutting, but some saws they haveare janked up, i go to a fairly new one around here

Since you know the dimensions figuring out the quantity shouldn't be too difficult ;)
Just be sure to take your time with the carpet, I think that's the hardest part of building boxes. My seams always look horrible, but then again I don't get much practice (I'm not an installer at work)

I would get 2.5 yards though, assuming that you get it the same width and everything else as I do. I get my carpet from a local shop (60" wide IIRC)

Regardless of what people might say, Walmart carpeting isn't good. It has a backing, and that doesn't allow it to stretch and mold like how caraudio guys need it.

some times "belt squeak" is a water pump ;)

4 Infinitys?? Honestly won't be crazy loud but I think the SQ will be pretty good. That will definently be some tight bass. I would seperate the chambers that tends to give better sound.

THUNDERBIRD
07-28-2006, 10:19 AM
it will only take you another hour to do seperate chambers for it, and go to the local car stereo store and get carpet, i get it here for $10 a yard and its 60" wide. but use at least super 77 or 90 glue and get a SHARP NEW razor blade and take your time to carpet it if ur good u can probly manage to do the top and sides in 1 piece if you get a big enough peice.

Im not that stupid:crazy: . Its coming from the pulley though. Should be an easy fix. And no i didnt get all this just to drown it out. T
Thanks for the input. Im ordering some stuff from parts express today. Im getting some wire, a fuse, 3 yards or carpet, some 4 gauge wire, and some terminals.:)
Edit- Im just about to go out anf silicone and finish the box. Ill post some more pics later.

Well im done with it. Im going to order carpet it today. That will be a challenge. Heres it fully put together. Theres a couple gaps on the top, bu i think they silicone covered all of them.

15 year old represent,

1 for most upper quality subs, 1 for dd, si, ss, re, ascendantaudio, treo, jl w6's, 2 for tc sounds, still working. of course these are sealed, im not good at ported box plans :-). sealed takes me 5 minutes :-)

Fifteen, let alone fourteen is far too young to be piloting a vehicle. If we had stricter driving training like in Europe, road fatalities would probably be cut in half.

espguitarist91
07-29-2006, 01:00 AM
Thanks. The actual assembly isnt a problem at all. I enjoyed it. The cuts were the hardest thing. Im guessing carpeting isnt going to be too easy though. Good luck with your box.

I know it is, I believe all of us in the row (IL, IN, OH) have 16 as the age, as do most states. I do know that in more of the rural areas (montana, SD, ND, etc), you can start driving at 14, and get a license at 15.

You'll be fine, it looks like you put enough on there that even though you may not have gotten some of it in the crack it should still seal well. If you do encounter a leak, then scrap it off with a razor blade and try again.

if it were me ask a friendly neighbor with tools to make cuts, Especially if they are carpenters :up2somet: :up2somet: :up2somet: +1 for me, then go get some clamps. and all other things u need and get to work. then when u actaully start cornering go over to ur friendly neighbor once again and ask if he can can help u for a little. And pay him a little bit.

I say im pretty wise but with age comes knowledge. And if u dont want to ask a neighbor or parent. buy a little bit of extra wood and make practise cuts on table saw or wutever so u get the hang of it. same with glue and stuff make a 5" by 5" box first :-)

with that much weight and that much flat area, supporting is a MUST! There will be so much flex that all of the bass energy will be wasted... might as well screw a 10" sub to the rear deck. Dont waste your hard work and let all that possible sub energy go to waste. Even if you want all 4 in the same internal enclosure please, please, please put some internal support in it! You will be much happier.
