wtf, is my box your table now!?!?!

jk

it looks kinda small in that pic  probably just the angle.

that box looks awesome. why'd you choose to fire the subs into the seat instead of up in an s10? i'm just wondering, i don't know what'd be better. i'm sure it'll be really loud in such a small cab tuned to 38Hz.

what subs/amp is it being used with?

EDIT: is it going under the seat? that'd be ******!!!

finally after 4 boxes in 2 weeks, i had a nail blowout the side of the wood, its insde the port, i dremeled it off, but around 1000 nails and only 1 went thru, its hidden, and fixed. it was like the 2nd to last nail i put in too. bummer.

what do you think it is moe? bc im runnin the same box in my truck and im lovin it. ill do some math. im guessin its around 2cu per. which is right around kickers specs for small ported for L7 10's.

07-24-2006, 11:02 PM
Nice work there man, keep it up. Looks like your cuts are clean, something that I cannot do well with a rotary saw.

Moe Lester
07-24-2006, 11:14 PM
if those cutouts really are for 10" L7s, then it looks like the box is about 12 high internally. The depth and width of the actual airspace look to be somewhere around 13 deep and 16 wide. That would be only 1.44 cubes per sub. do you have the dimensions of everything after you made changes to it?

PV Audio
07-24-2006, 11:18 PM
It didn't look large enough to me, but I was wrong last time, so I assumed that he's got it down :)

I only say it doesn't look large enough because I built a larger box that was like 1.8 a side.

yeah, i went through a few people trying to get a box made.

seems like everybody around here is just out of high school and going off to college soon. i'm glad i got someone to build me a box, and judging by the pics it looks great. hopefully we can meet up wednesday and i'll see how it sounds. i can't wait to get rid of my sealed, pre-fab.

kpozr2
07-24-2006, 11:36 PM
okay so wednesday, im not drivin my truck all the way there, me and a buddy are drivin to ames, im droppin my truck off at Cyclone Stereo to get an alarm, and he is drivin my moms car behind me,then we'll take my moms car to albert lea. id like to meet earlier in the day, so i can be back to pick up my truck with the new alarm on it. idk let me know whats the earliest you could be there.

xluben
07-24-2006, 11:41 PM
sounds great, i think i could be there around 6, unless you need to meet earlier. i can get off work whenever i want just let me know as soon as you can, so i can tell my boss. if i just don't go to work at all after lunch i'd make it by 2, but i'd rather work till 4 and get some decent hours in, but i'll work with whatever you need. if the shop closes at whatever time and you need to meet early afternoon, just let me know asap and i'll make it work.

kpozr2
07-24-2006, 11:43 PM

is 1.4 at 38 hz to small?

Moe Lester
07-25-2006, 10:25 AM
is 1.4 at 38 hz to small?

well its not really 1.4 cubes per sub or tuned to 38. i looked at the original plan and made it have a 3" wide port. It will end up that you will get 1.1 cubes per sub tuned to 48hz.

Army-Killa
07-25-2006, 12:14 PM

kpozr2
07-25-2006, 01:42 PM
the port length isnt the same on the plans, i changed it. im figuring it as we speak, hopefully it can be saved

kpozr2
07-25-2006, 02:23 PM
strait from the manual
S10L7
VENTED COMPACT (MINIMAL ENCLOSURE VOLUME)
1.25^3ft (35.4L) + port displacement
2.5x11.25" port, 19.75" long
power handling=450 rms

**** the bigger box is onluy 2.25^3 ft, 2.9 woulda been too big. i think shes okay. the tuning is under investigation...

When the port is in the middle like that and it "splits" to each side, does port displacement change or is it still the same?

Chevyaudio
07-25-2006, 03:03 PM
how much Port area...I guestimated ~36 sq in. 12in tall and 3 in wide. With a box that is 1.4 cubes with 36sq in of port and 25 in of port length I got right at 47 hz.

did you sand the paint off the edges before you put the top on? because i dont' think glue sticks to paint really well.

If you were responding to me, I suppose I didn't pose the question very clearly. When the port is in the middle, as it is here, and the lengths have to make a turn, does that change the figure for port displacement? Because the lengths had to turn, does it displace more, less, or the same than if the box were long enough for the sides of the port to be straight?

Chevyaudio
07-25-2006, 03:09 PM
No I wasnt responding to you...

kpozr2
07-25-2006, 03:22 PM
yes its sanded, now to change the tuning, how?? make it longer? shorter?

Chevyaudio
07-25-2006, 03:24 PM
Ygpm...and its lenghten the port.

kpozr2
07-25-2006, 03:27 PM
how much....?

slc72005
07-25-2006, 03:34 PM
how much....?

if you make it longer you will lose box size.

just cut out another piece of wood for the inside of the port so that the port walls are 1.5 inches as opposed to 3/4 inch thick this will lower the freq and not lose box size.

this will lower the port freq, just do some more calculations on how many of the walls you shoulod add double walls to to get the desired freq

kpozr2
07-25-2006, 03:36 PM
will this work?? i can add to the walls everywhere=???

kpozr2
07-25-2006, 03:40 PM
okay so the ports are going to be 1.5" wide now later 2nite. that should drop it to 35 hz and not so **** high!!!

DBfan187
07-25-2006, 06:56 PM
When the port is in the middle like that and it "splits" to each side, does port displacement change or is it still the same?Port Displacement

if it uses of the sides of the box for one side of its port wall, then:

(port height) x (port length-wood thickness) x (port width + wood thickness) / 1728

if the ports in the middle of the box, and has its own walls, then:

(port height) x (port length - wood thickness) x [port width + 2(wood thickness)] / 1728

You've got good box building skills dude. I started building boxes in high school (class of 95 :)) and made a killing. So much that I opened three car audio stores! (lost them in 9/11 though  ) I'm too old to sit out and build boxes anymore or I'd still be doing it. Life slowed down and I got intolerant of summer heat around 30  .

I don't mind it every now and then, but I was knocking two per day out way back when. You are doing a killer job on the boxes, it looks great. Just need to learn thiele small parameters and you'll be set. You've definitely got the eye for it.

http://www.thielesmall.com/

Keep up the good work.

kpozr2

heres my idea. Rip the top off. replace the internals, make new top and re carpet.

lilmaniac2
07-25-2006, 09:42 PM
before doing that cant you test it out...

Moe Lester
07-25-2006, 10:04 PM
Honestly, it would be easier and faster to build an entirely new enclosure than rip the carpeting off and break it apart and rebuild it. Also, the original plan is 2.9 cubes TOTAL, not per driver.

xluben
07-25-2006, 11:01 PM
i ran some numbers and came up with this:

http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/7013/4cubes34hz625sqiniz6.png

that's about 4 cu ft tuned to just under 34 Hz with 62.5 sq in of port, and i think it'll fit fine in an S10 and stay under the window line.

with that much more volume (nearly double) and 10+ Hz lower tuning, you'll get a LOT more low bass extension. while you're at it you might as well make another box for yourself too ;)

i can't wait to get my box!!!!!! it's going to be loud!!!!!

you should just drive all night and meet me tomorrow at 5AM in minneapolis :)

kpozr2
07-25-2006, 11:15 PM

ok, sorry PM box has room now.

let me run the numbers quick.

EDIT: well, i can't read the numbers on that pic.

EDIT2: if you're basing it on moe's plan you got there, and you're only making it 20" deep, you'll definitely need to bend the port both ways.

you're going to have to wait until tomorrow evening for me to have time to make you a plan.

what's your max dimensions? what volume and tuning do you want it to?

i'll make you a good set of plans with a center port.

and i assume those measurements are taken with the box pointing up (so 14" x 41" is the panel you want the drivers and port).

i'll see what i can do, but it's going to be less than 4 cu ft unless you up that 17" to 20"+

ok this is what i came up with VERY quickly:

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/2048/31cubes35hz50sqinyk2.png
3.12 cu ft @ 35 Hz, 50 sq in of port area

i'm not 100% sure on all those cut measurements, but the port is 4" wide and then bends both ways and is 2" on each side. the total port length should be 30" to get a tuning of 35Hz.

you should just to a side port like all of moe's plans. it's just so much quicker to run the numbers and bass isn't about symmetry ;)

What? You need to completely build a new box. I dont know what you have done and what you havent. I dont mean to sound rude, but if Im telling you exactly what to do, why dont I just build it and get the money. I said I would make you a plan not tell you how to build it with your current pieces.

i come out with a little bit less volume and a little bit higher tuning, but my calculations could be a little off.

it's definitely bigger than 3.0 cu ft (after all displacements i got 3.1 cu ft) and definitely tuned lower than 40Hz (i got ~38Hz with winisd).

it should sound a lot better than the old box, late night tip will be way deeper. i can't wait to hear it tomorrow :)

xluben
07-26-2006, 08:37 PM
I just ran Kicker's recommended numbers :scared:

Minimum Volume:
1.25 cu ft, 2.5" x 11.25" x 19.75" port tuning is > 49Hz!!!!

SPL/Deep Bass:
2.25 cu ft, 3" x 11.25" x 18" port tuning >38Hz

and those numbers where from that online port calculator, WinISD gives even higher tuning numbers!

I guess your other box was to Kicker's specs! :)

I'm sure you new box will be much better.

if xluben is right.......**** everyone busted my ***, and there was NOTHING wrong with it!! are you kidding me!!!! jesus, i freaked out, lost business.

i guess i was just pointing out that manufacturer's recommended specs are not all that great. especially when it's made for a mainstream market, and the specs are under "minimum volume" which pretty much means, it'll sound like sh*t, but won't take up as much trunk space, and that's what the average consumer would want. and it'll help chain electronics stores sell their high tuned, prefab boxes :)

don't you think it's better how it worked out? you get a much better box for yourself, and you didn't end up selling a box that he could have been potentially unhappy with. you did lose out on some time and money though. i guess you know what to do for the next person who wants a box for 2, L710's in an S10 :)

did you get that box installed yet? i want to hear what you think of it. i look forward to seeing the walmart carpet! if i would have known you could get decent carpeting locally (i was going to get it through parts express if i did my own box), i probably would have tried building it myself. i'm sure it would have come out badly, though. i'd have to have hd or menards or lowes do the cuts and probably borrow a jigsaw for the driver cutouts, and i don't even have clamps, so..... i'd be in bad shape, i'm glad i had you do it. i'm sure it'll look and sound great.

i had a blown speaker in my door, so i took my front stage out, and put all the stock speakers back in :( (i had no rear-fill before). at least i have them all amped now :) i also got my subs out of the old box and everything else ready to plug and play with the new box!!!! i can't wait. i'll give you call tomorrow before i leave.

i have it all ready :)

i've got wire with female slide on's ready to go (wired in parallel for the single terminal cup), speaker wire for hooking it to the amp, drill (hopefully the battery is charged), screws, screwdriver, wire stripper/crimper, electrical tape, socket wrench, and plenty of other odds and ends.

i figure i can get it in a running in a few minutes (mounting the drivers will take the longest), i'll worry about mounting the amps and securing the box later :)

are you bringing a video cam? i wouldn't mind a vid of mine while we're at it.

you can compare your lows (tuned to 36Hz) to my lows (tuned to 32Hz), but you have a smaller vehicle, so it'll probably make up the difference.

i hope culver's doesn't mind loud music!!!!!!
