Yep... only wants to do it when im driving highway it seems. Coming home last weekend from latrobe had it in 5th just cruisin and BAM kicks out of gear and revs real high. I pushed it back in, and it did it like 4 more times on the way home (100 mile trip). Ive been driving it around but wont seem to do it anymore so i kinda forgot about it until yesterday driving back to latrobe again to see my girl, it started again. I just simply kept my hand on the stick the whole ride and could feel it wiggle around every once in awhile but it stayed in gear. Only problem.... i have no idea why this would happen? It doesnt seem to do it if i punch the gas or change anything dramatically... it just does it on random. Any help with this?

syncros might be going. I drove one of those a while ago and it did that when letting out of the gas. There might have been something keeping it from going all the way into gear and now its out of the way, internal.

Well the clutch plate im guessing no, clutch died in my s10 and it never kicked out of gear like this, it was just like...once i stopped moving... it just didnt wanna go anymore. I dont know though- if i knew i wouldnt be here completely clueless. Just dont want to take it to a shop and get raped if i dont have to

tell ya right now its not the clutch, the one who said that is a retard, i wont even go into detail...

what it actually sounds like is internal issues with the transmission, specifically we're talkin about synchros, as well as the detents and interlocks.... see what basically the job of a synchro is to match up shaft speeds while changing gears so as to make the upshift smooth, usually the most common issues with worn/failing synchros would be grinding. detents and interlocks are basically what are used to keep the trans in the gear which you have selected, that is more than likely the issue. now there could be some variance, i could go into more detail or possibilities but bottom line is, do a quick check on both ends of your linkage just to make sure there isnt any play there (slight possibility) and then pretty much what you're left with is the trans needs to come out, and it needs to be gone thru... maybe not an all out rebuild but once its out and apart, it'll probably be worth it just to go ahead and check for proper wear on all the dog teeth, change out the synchros, all the bearings, etc. take it to a transmission specialist, they'll be able to help you.

It did it again on my way to an interview... wow.... so you think thats gonna be expensive? I was thinking of selling the car....

This doesnt sound good at all.... Get rid of it before it gets worse? Im looking to get a bike and i found a nice $500 beater up the road, so if i sold the avenger i could put a nice downpayment on a new bike. Its only gonna get worse from here right?

Big question... is it just gonna pop and be done? i dont want a car dropping a tranny when im 100 miles away at my girlfriends house....

yeah pretty much its not going to get any better, the down the road problems might just be that it pops out of gear all the time, never wants to stay in unless you're holding the shifter... if it caused wear with the 4-5 synchro you'll have trouble getting it into gear and it will grind as it goes in. it might not be a bad idea to sell it, but its not a horrible problem thats going to blow up your trans and leave you stranded, all its really going to do worst case scenario is prevent usage of that gear, and being that its 5th, it wouldnt be hard to make it wherever you need to go if you lose the ability to shift to 5th.

calibrate your shift linkage (or rebuilt ~$100)

and if you have a self-tensioning clutch cable, replace it, it could be faulty

even a bad clutch or pressure plate wouldn't kick the gear out, unless it wasn't engaged all the way to begin with

Im gonna take your word for that, since it doesnt do it in any other gear... and go see her tonight. If i lose 5th...**** it. 4th will get me home just fine.... gonna **** for gas and be loud but as long as its moving i really dont care

Well, would i be a **** if were to try to get someone to rearend me? My car is all out of whack for alignment and doesnt drive straight as it is because its already been wrecked and fixed again. I bought it for 6k, got it fixed for 3k (liability doesnt cover stupidity), its got good rims with even better tires...but the tires are worn all ****ed up cause of the alignment. So really i have like 10k into the car... much more if you go the distance with stereo, new brakes, calipers, coilovers etc. If someone was to hit me, i could blame them for the alignment and whatnot. This is a **** move...i know... but putting more money into a car that doesnt even drive straight just seems stupid at this point. Id just leave my windows open in downtown butler and have a wigger pick it up in a half hour if my liability covered theft, but it doesnt.

I think im just going to try to sell it. It doesnt act up on shorter trips, only when ive been on highway for 40-50 miles is when it starts. I didnt have much trouble with it on the way to latrobe but on the way back it was acting up and i had some trouble keeping it in gear.

Recommendations?

i know on the T56 tranny that comes in F-Bodies, Vettes, Vipers, etc...they'll jump out of 3rd if they been driven hard, which is usually caused by a bent shift fork. you haven't been banging it into 5th real hard have you?

lol happened with my old 5.0 too many 2nd,3rd, 4th gear chirps ;) and i always winded it out too.

but yeah its def. the tranny. ask a certified tranny technician at a dodge dealership. he will know.

Well, i found out the problem. The hard way i guess... i will have pictures that explain everything once im done eating and upload them. I have never pulled a tranny out of a FWD car and will be doing it alone... i need to know what exactly to do. I have everything out of the way and unplugged i just dont want to take apart **** i dont have to... looked but cant find a site that would have a How To on how to take out a transmission for an Avenger, or for a 2nd gen Talon,Eclipse, etc. They are exactly the same if its the 5 speed 4 cylinder. I need some help on finding out what im doing... please

i think that sums up my problem. Seems it wanted to literally explode while i was 90 miles away from home. This happened friday at about 2:00. Driving normal, it was kicking out of gear so i was trying to baby it, put it in 3rd and was about to shift into 4th when it blew, car shut off as i was in the left lane of a 3 lane road. I pushed it to a penzoil station in greensburg and went under it and what do i see... nice huh? Well that wasnt the end of my bad luck, it seems as i was out trying to find a trailor to get home isntead of paying $400 for a towtruck... someone decided to break into my car and steal EVERYTHING. Tell me that while i was gone for 4 hours while this penzoil station was open, that it wasnt the 2 guys working there. I was ready to go on a rampage today when i went to pick my car up, but lucky for them they were closed. I will have a talk with the manager as soon as i get the phone number and let him know whats up. Not only that, but the fiberglass bumpers...front and back... are going to need sanded down and repainted due to my lack of knowledge on how to strap a car onto a trailor that it barely fits on. My luck keeps getting worse...

EDIT: could i get a mod to edit my title? i shoulda just started a new thread

^^ @ the pic: yikes, definitely ***** when you can see the diff without taking anything apart

on a good note, manual transaxles really are not that hard to rebuild, they're pretty basic. i used to be pretty intimidated by trannys in general but once i had one actually apart i realized its no big deal. maybe you can find a used core that would be good for a rebuild, perhaps check ebay or forums

Me? rebuilding a tranny? :crap: I dont know if i trust myself that much. I mean, all i have is time now- money is low...no job...nowhere i really need to be in a rush. Autozone seems to be the best plan byfar. For 1100-1300 i can get a rebuilt tranny. Then bring mine in and get 400-650 core charge for it. I checked eBay and there isnt a such thing as a good deal on a used tranny, they all have more miles on them than mine does. Which scares me most because mine did this at 74,000 miles and honestly i dont beat it. Im going to go buy one of those books at autozone in a little bit and get busy pulling this thing out...by myself. Atleast this way i will feel like i accomplished a lot and didnt need anyone else to do it

EDIT: realized yesterday once i got everything out of the way that it also has a hole similar to the one i can already see, but on the top. What would make such a thing happen? Its not like i hit something to crack it or anything... if you can see where it is located it would be impossible to hit something and not get the whole car stuck on that object

most likely the pressure plate. watch it though, dont force it back into gear, you will break the shift fork.

yea, i scattered my tranny in the cobra. going down the freway easing it into 5th once i got off the on ramp, about 60 mph. i had the ford dealership replace the clutch in it a week before. i requested that everything be changed. well, they forgot the shift fork as well as a few other things. that stiff *** clutch and a weak fork. scattered. it wouldnt go in any gear but third. thank god for massive hp so i could still drive it to the dealership. i parked it in the middle of the driveway because it wouldnt go into reverse either and they asked me to park it in a parking space at the dealership so i didnt block the service driveway. i wasnt too happy about them giving me **** since they didnt do their job and broke an expensive tranny.

my guess is that you destroyed the differential
