View Full Version : Opinion - What to do

Okay so about 3 months ago I got an 04 GT, love it, want to keep it forever but I cant. Car is paid for, keep this in mind.

I can get around 13k on a trade in supposively and KBB has it around 17 for individual sale.

Problem - New oil, still huffing black smoke, and transmission is acting up, my dad is worried about it because I'm leaving for college and wants me to get something with better gas mileage considering I'll be driving around two hours to school.

So my dilemma

What should I do?

I'm looking for 2002+ cars that are Turbod 4 cylinders or have a V6 with decent economy. I hate gettin rid of my Stang, and I really do love car, but ****'s gotta go I guess.

Beginning thoughts

Lancer Evo VII

What else? I'm looking more towards stock turbo cars because I dont want to have to do the turbo work myself.

very reliable AND fuel efficient.....Audi A6 2.7T .....Twin Turbo V6

Pros: Fast as hell. 4 wheel drive. Luxerious. (sp?) Lots of trunk space.

Cons: none i have found so far

If you love your car, just get it fixed.

Hell its a mustang, drop a new engine in and part the old one out on ebay...

MisterGrubbs
07-05-2006, 02:04 AM
LOL That Audi would be great, I've only got around 17k to spend though bro, not 25 or maybe more

I do love my car, but I dont want tobe sitting on the side of the road going "god ****it why didnt I just get a WRX" ya know?

Part out this 4.6? Why not just build it, if I"m going to do that

Seriously, thanks for the responses but I'm looking for a good little 4 cylinder or medium V6 car, not my mustang. If I was disregarding gas mileage I would keep it, it's been good to me SO FAR and the looks I get in it suprises me.

Lancer Evo - anything else in the 17k range?

I was thinking about a black mazda 6 with the 6 cylinder, doing a turbo on it and dropping it with black rims

I know I said I didnt want to add anything on myself, and I dont, but it is a thought.

I'm looking around

Still leaning towards having a small payment and getting an Evo though

Anyone ever heard of a Mazda Speed6? It's kinda made me think twice on it as well

bumpinne0n
07-06-2006, 01:07 AM
Have you found the Evo for $17K? I don't think you'll be able to find one for that $$$. You could probably find a WRX for that but I doubt you'll find a used Evo for that.

Have you looked at a Dodge SRT-4? You might want to check those out if you can get over the fact that they're a Neon. You could easily pick up an '03 or '04 for $17K.

MisterGrubbs
07-06-2006, 11:45 AM
I saw an 05 with 13k on it for 18k local, I'm just really not a fan of the neons. No disrespect and I know they're quick, but for some reason it's in my head that they're just cheap cheap cheap cars.

I've found an 03 Evo for 18k, cheapest I've seen. I'm gonna keep looking around

WRX's go for tons more than 17k dont they?

I'm sure a lot of people would agree about the SRT-4s being cheap. That's really what they were made to be though, a performance car for under $22K new. I've just got a regular Neon but I'd love to have an SRT-4.

You should be able to find an 02 or 03 WRX (non-STi) for 17K or less. I would take an Evo anyday over a WRX though, especially performance-wise.

Getting rid of the mustang is moving forward

look at a monte carlo SS. Decent looking not to bad on gas and the SS's arent a slouch

The mazda's are also nice

Must be nice to have $17k to spend on a car. My average is $500 for a car. I may actually spend $1000 on a car some day but I doubt it.

I've been looking, there are some WRX's online but I am still to find one local for anywhere near 17-18k

I'll keep looking

I wanna get the Mazdaspeed6 but there just arent any, at all lol

Actually talk to bumpingblazer. He is supposed to be getting a Mazadaspeed6 this month and he seems to know a lot about them. Hell I would get one, but they can be a little pricey. I know he is getting a mad deal on one though. Its all about who you know I guess, lol!

Ah just seen you only want to spend 17g's. Scratch out the Speed6.:crap:

I would recommend my car, which is a Ford Focus ST when turbo''d can do low 14's. There is a guy on the FJ ford forum that has a video of one and is pretty impressive. Also they are pretty good on gas. I paid 18500 for mine, but had 1500 in negetive equaity. Just a thought. Good luck!

MisterGrubbs
07-06-2006, 04:44 PM
There's a SVT focus sitting around town for like 14k, Dunno if there's something wrong with it or what

I think they're ugly though lol

Camaro_man
07-06-2006, 05:16 PM
Yeah uh dont get a Focus unless you're a woman. That's almost as bad as a Beetle.

If you love your stang, why not get a v6 Mustang?

Bloodhound34
07-06-2006, 07:42 PM
Man if you want a fast car that aint to bad on gas..

Audi TT
Supra
Lancer Evo
WRX
3000 GT VR4
Stealth
300zx
240sx
Talon
Del Sol
Prelude
RX-7
RX-8
Eclipse
Celica

I don't know if you want a BRAND NEW car, but these can get pretty fast. As far as gas milage, Idk about some of them but they are basically all ricers so they should be okay?

Your Mustang is puffing black smoke???? 3 yrs old, hmmm..... blue smoke or black smoke? black smoke is just running rich, blue smoke is bad news. Fix your car (its practically new), save your money and put an ATI Procharger on that 4.6. You won't have to worry about any foreign cars making you look silly after that, for sure :D

And dude, the sound that 4.6 will make with flowmasters and x-pipe, notwithstanding the whistle from the procharger. why would you want anything else????

Forget about your audio system, you will never turn it up, that car will sound SWEET. And it gets around 25 mpg. you're talking highway miles to school, right? Your not going to do much better with a 4.turbo.

Seriously considering one myself.

I've been trying to get my fiance to purchase a WRX, that would be my second choice, for a lowcost "no maintenace", "safe driver". I could really look into hot-rodding one of the new gen turboed. You know, for my GIRLFRIEND and such. For me, I want a little rumble under my butt.

Of course, this is all just IMO!

I'm gonna have to drop some money, my rear end is catching here lately, like it pops in real hard. I'm not someone who knows an assload on cars but it cant be too good lol

All I know is a friend of mine called and said I huffed black smoke, and I know it's good for Diesels and bad for gas lol

I do love the stang sound though lol

I'll play it by ear and see whats going on in a month or two

Decipha
07-07-2006, 07:38 AM
just replace the rear end if its giving you fits... i would personally stay with what you have for many reasons, most obvious... its already yours, hopefully the gas situation doesn't break the bank... hope you like college

MisterGrubbs
07-09-2006, 01:49 AM
I'm going to get the engine and rear end checked out, and the transmission serviced, stick with it for a little while and get settled down in college

If all goes well I'll try stepping to an STI or an Evo

bumpin_blazer
07-09-2006, 02:37 AM
Speed6 is a great car ;). then again i'm picking mine up for only 6k over what you're range is brand new with the add-on's i want.

If you only have 17k you won't find an STi for that cheapest i've seen one for is around 24k. I'm still debating an 07' STi limited though if my dealer can get me one.

MisterGrubbs
07-09-2006, 01:35 PM
How the hell are you gettin the speed6 for so cheap bro? They run HIGH 20's new, correct? I hate you lol

If it were my choice on one, I'd have a black one with the white and black leather seats inside, just sets it off IMO

Good luck with the car

the only complaint i've been told of thus far is that the shifter is a little notchy and isn't as smooth as some like it. that'll go within 3 weeks of me getting it if i don't like how she shifts:D. i'll post up when i get it though and let ya know what i think.

Well something came up

2005 Lancer Evo VIII, black on black, beautiful car, manual with 12k on it, they only want 24,999 at the dealer

I can get it for my car and 10 g's walk out, I'll probably do it and get payments around 200/month

Whatcha think?

bumpin_blazer
07-12-2006, 11:12 PM
24,999 is a hell of a price on an 05' VIII with only 12k on it.

MisterGrubbs
07-13-2006, 02:58 PM
Excuse me, their asking price is 26,999 he told me the wrong number, but he keeps emphasizing that it's their "asking" price not their final

Even then it's 5gs less than KBB says it should be lol

bumpinne0n
07-13-2006, 10:38 PM
If you can get the VIN for that Evo, I'll pull a carfax for you, but it'll have to be sometime before the end of Saturday because my subscription runs out then. It sounds like a fairly good deal to me, but you might be able to get it cheaper if you try. He might've accidentally quoted what they have in the car, which is a pretty **** bad mistake on his part, if that's what happened. He's probably emphasizing that's the asking price and not the final because after taxes, etc. it'll be more.

from one mustang owner to another keep the car man... dont down grade to a 4 banger... if your rearend is acting up or making noise you may need to check the lube in the rear sometimes if the lube burns off axles will grind... mustangs really arent that bad on gas... my buddies 03 cobra ( 474 rwhp) gets 24-25 on the highway...if you are really going to get rid of it dont get a srt-4 they are full of problems... evo is probly your best bet... good luck

that's bullshit and i don't care how you wan to try and say it isn't. it was only rated at 22 and i've never heard of a car getting 2-3 mpg more than it used to stock with another 200-300hp. stock is only 390hp at the crank you're talking right at 300 at the wheels so to get that 174rwhp that you say he has he'd have to add almost 200-300 at the crank.

My 4002 ORion, my DLS MS6's and my 680 Premier are coming out

then that stang must have the single greatest drivetrain ever built in the history of man. they didn't run but a 12.9 stock and had 360-370 hp. IMO that's sad seeing as how the stock Z06' has the same power but run's 1.4 seconds faster? those are the most powerful mustangs ever built then i'd imagine b/c even the new SVT is only 475 at crank i'd imagine it looses about 100hp to the wheels? maybe not.

Z06s weigh 3100 while the Cobras weigh close to 3700. The Z06 also cost about $10K more than the Cobra too. I would be willing to bet that the new Cobras are going to be just as underrated as the old ones. I'm not a Ford fan at all, but they weren't playing around with the '03-04 Cobras. You can get a smaller pulley and a tune for around $500 and get a gain of about 50-60 RWHP.

Actually they were underrated from the factory, so seeing 350-370RWHP from them stock was normal. Even at 370RWHP having a 16% drivetrain loss is only 440HP at the crank. Even still they are slow for what they are IMO.

As for the maker of this thread. Keep the car, it's already paid off. Fix it up and add some power if you want to. It really makes no sense if you are trying to save money to go get a car and have a montly payment. With the money you save from buying a new car it would pay for your gas and then some IMO.

All the '03-'04 Cobras were supercharged. No '02 Cobras were made and IIRC the '01s were the Cobra-Rs and 99-00 were N/A Cobras.

Edit

The 99 and 01s were N/A and the '00s were the Cobra-Rs and no '02s were made.
