My 12" magnum box got fuked by me going on vacation (didn't even start it), plus my friend wants to try out a design I sent him, so I'll make him a box fo' free. Trying out the rabbeted edge carpet technique, hopefully it works *gasp*

Anyway, gonna start building now, here's the new design. Two type r 12s, 4.25 cubes at 31 hz.

:uhoh: What other specs do you want? I already said that. Also, most rectangular prisms do look alike ;). Facing up because it's in a SUV and that's how he wants them.

That should be loud, it looks very similar to my old box for my R's. mine is 4.3ft3 tuned to 33hz.

I was just wondering the overall dimensions and port dimensions.

yeah I was just curious, cause i'm trying to design a box myself.

mine would definitely be smaller than that, though. I was kind of interested in the port area.

i'm doing 2, 12's in 3-4 ft^3 (probably 3.5) and I was thinking of two 4" ports about 17" long (tune to ~32 Hz).

According to WinISD, this should give me <16 m/s port air velocity (17.5 m/s creating port noise). Anyone have any comments as to whether or not this is enough port area?

44 sq in of port area, small, I know. I'm not too worried though. Either way, it was free and I owed him a box and he's already the loudest at my school with the setup he has currently. No pics yet, just done assembling and need to sand and paint the port. Things I like:

1. Simple
2. Doesn't take much time
3. People are still impressed (my neighbor :uhoh: )

Things I didn't like:

1. Some ****** cut the wood for me because I was too lazy, thus, unmatched panels

2. I had no ****** clue as to what I was doing in regards to the carpeting job, but it looks okay (I used my table saw to "rabbet" into the wood)

3. Simple

Other than that, not bad of a build. Some more port area would ahve been nice, but it's all good.

how much port area is recommended for two, 12" subs?

SqBubble, it's called sketchup.

you can't set the dimensions with that program? (at least not with the free version)

i think i'll just stick with proE (even though your box drawings do look very nice).

Box is done, just need to carpet it tomorrow and see how it turns out. To those asking, yes, I know full and well that there needs to be more port, but this box wasn't designed for these subs anyway. It was like one of the first I ever did, so Jake wanted to try it for his R's. I said okay, wte, and I built it. No harm in doing so :)

Pix tomorrow when I can go get my camera without waking up my entire house (my mom put it in her closet with their camera).

I still don't know how JB managed to do this rabbet thing, mine didn't turn out well. I had to use a .75x.75x14.5 piece of MDF to keep the side inset (look at first pic).

Basically, if you know how to use the line tool, and the push-pull tool, it's not too hard.

squeak12
07-01-2006, 12:28 AM
I like doing my sides a different way. If external dimensions dont allow for extra, I just make it ugly and do diagonal cuts with a square in the center. If I can design it how I want, I leave an inset on the each side 1". Then cover the box and cover the side panels and hammer them into the insets.

EDIT for pictures:

Hrmm, whatever floats ya boat I guess :)

I'm just used to the four triangle meeting in the center of the sides method.

squeak12
07-01-2006, 12:35 AM
Usually my boxes are too wide for that method, and I always end up with glue lines unless I cut the center out and put a square center in. I think its the carpet though. Its kinda thick. I want to try the stuff from your autotrim.

Should have made the side come all the way out to be flush with the front, instead of putting in that little strip. ;)

And if you're wondering about the two tone, no, it wasn't meant to be that way. I ran out of the dark grey carpet, so I just used charcoal on the rest. Unfortunately, even the two yards of that weren't enough, so I had to put in a little strip on the bottom. No matter, you can't see it anyway. Beyond that, just a few slips on the sides and it looks good IMO. To those wondering about this technique, no, it is NOT difficult at all. I am the biggest skeptic I know, so take it from me. Thanks 50% to bjfish and the other 50% to James Bang for telling me how to do it, even though I put my own twist on it. "RABBETED" EDGE FTW!
