Long story short, I knew a guy that said he knew how to fiberglass. Iíd figured leave it to someone with experience plus I didnít have the time. All I had to do was pay for the parts and $30 for labor. Well he did the job and FUUUUged it up real good. He could have used bondo or somethingÖ.. I honestly could have done a waaaay better job myself. The paint job was decent and so was the top, but there are too many lumps and bumps by the speakers. Any way to recover from this disaster?

I donít wanna throw away the box because it pounds pretty hard!! Even for a sealed box its awesome!!

ramos

Yep, carpet it . Or sand off the paint, fill the imperfections with filler. Then prime and paint it again. :)

And the reason I wanted it fiberglassed I didnt want the carpet look. but I might not have a choice now.

I am wondering why MDF wasn't used. It would have been stronger, and last time i checked you can paint MDF????

PatFitz9

yeah, why fiberglass a shape that can made with MDF in half the time...

orphe
06-07-2006, 04:20 PM
MDF was used... The top is mdf. I just wanted the front to look Unique. thats why wanted to use fiberglass to accentuate the curves and give it a different look...

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit... Yeah I'm guessing it was a noob glasser. Carpet it and it would look pretty good.

ya just sand all that off, it looks like it wasn't sanded at all anyways sand and refill the front of the box and smooth it down, paint!

by the looks of it, it is just a fiberglass front and all the other panels are MDF. They are sort of designed like our standard boxes. Just sand it all down, use some body filler to make it look nice, and then re paint it.
BTW, what was the total you paid for that box?

orphe

The colors are Black & Silver. And didnt pay a lot for it I think total was $60 for supplies and labor

you get what you pay for.

sand it, smooth it out with body filler (Bondo, Rage Gold, or other), sand again, primer, sand, primer, sand primer, paint.

or something like that.

^^^ You paid the guy to fiberglass it, not bondo it ;) Just do what he said, sand/bondo/sand etc.

ingleside left out like 7 steps though. after you do what he said do this as follows or it'll turn out the same:

1) sand
2) primer
3) paint
4) open beer
5) drink beer
6) kick dude in nuts for jacking your 30 bucks
7) retake pics and post them so we can all enjoy your new work

:D

Barring the chitty finish work. If the enclosure is sturdy he spent his $30 well. I would charge more than $30 to make an unfinished enclosure like his. It would be smoother, but more than $30 :)

thats the diffeence from a fiberglasser and someone that knows fiberglassing, not everyone has what it takes to do the finish work. Any ******* can mix resin, not everyone has the patience to finish the work.

I would sand it down rebondo it several times till you have it smooth. repaint, or vinyl it. I am not a big fan of carpet on glass.

Easy now, by trade I am a fiberglass fabricator. But I can do finish work :)

Me either, kind of defeats the purpose of making it out of glass in the first place in my eyes :)
