Sorry for the g@y title, g/f thought of it. Anyways I needed a way to get into those remote camping locations. My t-bird just can't cut it. Decided 2 days ago to check the local buy sell. Found this add for a 1988 Chevy Blazer S-10 style, 4x4, 2.8L auto. It doesn't run because the carb needs a rebuild. I will rebuild it and see if it runs. The guy says it will, but we'll see. If it doesn't work out, I have a 350 that I can put into it. I don't know anything about these things though. Don't know if the stock tranny can take a small block, or if the transfer case will bolt up to a TH350. Time to learn about that type of stuff. For $400 it's going to be a good start though. If anyone knows any good blazer forums, let me know. Pics.

Ooh, ouch. 2.8l ftl... Might as well keep it and save a little money as long as it runs, right?

I'd say if the bdy is solid and the 4wd still works it's a hella deal!

Already joined, but they don't seem to do much regarding 4x4's and small block swaps. I have been reading S-10 forums and am getting a better understanding on what is involved. Not quite as much work as I was thinking, but still more to read about.

my wife's cousin is a big blazer addict and that is all he does is swap motors 2.8 out and small block 350 in can ask him some questions on stuff if u need help?

Speaking of 350 swaps http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=8072247190&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT I'm not going to be touching the 2.8 unless it has to do with unbolting it and pulling it the eff out. I have a book handy re the swap and there is also lots of info on the net. I think I pretty much understand what all is involved. If I need something, I'll let ya know thanks.

no the small blcok wont bolt up to it.

If it has the 4.3 it owuld.

To put the small block v8 into that machine you need almost the complete 4.3 blazer running gear (tranny, transfercase and ushc)

also i thoguth they were a 3.8 v6.. i thoguht the 2 optison weere 3.8 or a 4.3

Blazin_Jason
06-08-2006, 08:13 PM
Yea it's a 2.8. Luckily all I need is a new tranny from either a full size 4x4 or 4.3 blazer. I think I found 1 cheap at the wreckers from a 4.3. I can still use the same transfer case/drive shafts. Only other major changes are corvette rad and exhaust.

MrSector9

oh ok when we swapped my friendswe used the whole transfer case/tranny form the 4.3 never bother trying to bolt the other sutff up :)

Yea that's the plan. Although you can't plan for everything. Before it's on the road it will have the sbc, 3" body lift, new paint, and either 31's or 32's. I'm using this truck to practice body work and paint on. It will look way different then those pics once it's ready for the road.

A small block into a 2.8L is NOT a drop in modification. The easiest thing to do would be buy a 88 pickup with a 350 and swap everything in to it.

Hit up www.automotiveforums.com in the blazer section, more than one person in there has swapped in a SBC, great info in there also.

Yuck! I already know that it's not a direct drop in bolt up type swap. You guys will see once it's done that it is easily achieved. =)

Spent a couple hours yesterday and today after work tearing it down. Couple of bolts and the front sheet metal is off. Looks like I need to go get a new driverside inner fender. It's all rotted to hell, due to a leaky overflow tank. The fender isn't all that great either. Has to get worse before it can get better.

Haven't done anything lately, (sinus infection). Today pulled the old motor and tranny out. Took a couple hours. Now to pull the 350 out of the donor.

You found a way to buy vehicles now without paying for them? :wow:
Not that I advocate scamming in any shape, fashion, or form but that's a pretty neat accomplishment!

Someone from a whole other forum meandered over here hunting you, Scott.
Seems that your scamming isn't isolated only here, eh?

Oh uh this thread is gonna get ot. He had a vehicle that he had written off recently and got paid out for it. I think he might also be getting a loan to cover the difference. But if he can scam a dealership to get a car without paying, then I think we all would want to know how to do that. :D

Prowler573

Sorry for that, Jason.
I did read/look at your posts for this thread.
Good luck getting the 5.7L stuffed in there. Yes it can be done but I'm thinking it is much more labor intensive than you're expecting.
No, that tranny that was attached to the back of that 2.8L will not hold when fed the torque from your average 350cid.

That's a pretty common swap, though ~ Putting a V8 in an S10/S15 of some variety (whether it be a Blazer/Jimmy or a pickup)

There's a guy here locally that has an '87 S15 with a 383 stroker shoehorned into it. It's pretty intense for a small block

Blazin_Jason
07-09-2006, 12:39 AM
Oh yeah it's definately not a cake walk. The 2.8 tranny is a different bellhousing bolt pattern so it doesn't work. So I pulled a tranny from a 4.3 blazer 3 weekends ago. I am going to have that rebuilt to v8 specs. Lots of people use stock 4.3 tranny's behind v8s with no problems. I understand how much work/money it will be. That's why it's a slow project and only do what I can when I feel like it, hah. The motor going in will be pretty much stock. Hone the cylinders, new rings, new bearings, and stuff like that. It already has a different cam in it. The motor is going to be coming out of my dad's old 71 van. It still get's 2nd gear rubber with over 300K MILES on it and runs strong.

Prowler573
07-09-2006, 12:40 AM
2 bolt or 4 bolt mains on that old van motor, if you know?

Blazin_Jason
07-09-2006, 12:44 AM
Not too sure, will find out as soon as I pull it and tear it down. If I had to bet money I would say 4 bolt, but I'm pulling that outa my *** and no facts behind it.

It took me a few months just to get the thing registered into my name. I have been working on it slowly here and there. Most of the work has been detail things under the truck. Scraped the frame and painted it about 10 times, undercoated it, removed bumps stops etc. Just had the rear springs re-arched 1.5"'s and powder coated them. The tires are 33" BFG AT's, which will require some fender trimming to clear. Probably won't get too much done over winter, but I would like to at least get the motor done to go in early spring.

Not much done. I'm gonna call some machine shops around here to get the engine done. I want to get started on that pretty quick and get the drivetrain into it. I'm also going to take the front end apart, such as the torsion bars, knuckles, rotors, calipers, control arms and powder coat them. Then instal all new ball joints, polyurethane bushings, etc. Still need to have this thing on the road this summer for camping.

Here's the substage for it though. 4 Premier 3004's, 2 2500d's.

Decided to pick up a used rebuilt motor instead of rebuilding mine at this time. It has about 8,0000km on it after a full $5,000 rebuild. This is what it looked like after getting it home.

Slowly yes it is. It's way off from my original plan with it though. When it's done it will be pretty much new. I don't know how much it would have cost for all the powder coating that I've done. Probably a few thousand. I think it will be all worth it though since it will be a dd and should be reliable.

Ok so I am still working on it here and there. Here's what I have done recently. Installed the torsion bars, torsion mount, lower control arms, upper arms, knuckles, calipers, sway bar, ball joints. All of the parts have been powder coated of course. I also installed new pro comp ES9000 shocks along with a pro comp steering stabilizer. So the front end now has a full set of E.S. poly bushings (sway bar, tie rod ends, control arms, motor mount, tranny mount), new moog ball joints, new calipers, new ATE rotors, stainless steel braided brake lines, bendix pads & seals. I am waiting for my new tie rod adjuster sleeves to come in and then I will remove and paint the tie rod ends. Not going to replace them as they are already moog's problem solvers.

At this point I just ordered in some more pieces for the engine. From Summit: Crane universal Firewire's spark plug wires, wire loom kit, fuel filter, Percey's aluminum header gaskets, stage 8 header bolts. I also ordered from db electrical 2 200 amp HO alternators. Also ordered 2 alt brackets made by Alan Grove. Lastly from Bill's Hot Rod Company a 300 series power steering pump bracket. Here are a couple pics of what will stop (hopefully) the new 350.

Thanks. Can't wait till it's all done and ripping **** up. I just love v8's, yes bad for the environment and on gas blah blah. It's a trade off though for torque and kick *** sound. I filled up my thunderbird the other day cost me $98.00 cad for 80 litres of reg. That just pisses me off cause that car has a 3.8 and is gutless as crap. At least with the blazer I will be ok with the gas cost as it will at least have some power to it.

It's hard to capture the color of the candy powder coat as the pics are taken in a portable garage and no lighting. So it's only what natural light is getting through the tarps.
