run down:
5 cubes @ 32 hz/ Dual chamber / 2.5 each chamber / 4" x 11" ports

The Future:

This box will a slight challenge for me being that this is a slanted box. It will involve cutting angled edges, which I am not a fan off, but I'm up for the challenge. also, I think the design looks nice.

So far, i've almost got all the pieces cut. I just need two sides to cut.

Here's some pieces cut:
and some ghostly blurr on the left trying to get at my supplies.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a11/mobster909/dual%20IDmax%20box/04-16-06_2051.jpg
Face piece w/ the sub cutout and port cutout. Pretty snug fit for the ports. A little clear silicone will make it air-tight.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a11/mobster909/dual%20IDmax%20box/04-16-06_1858.jpg
Some supplies and hardware that'll be used for this project. 2 more bar clamps then my last project. clear GE window/door silicone recommended by PV audio, i think. GALLON of titebond II ! hell yeah.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a11/mobster909/dual%20IDmax%20box/04-16-06_2050.jpg
Look what came about after cutting the port cutout:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a11/mobster909/dual%20IDmax%20box/04-16-06_2040.jpg

This what i have done so far. I will continue tomorrow morning and have updates by the afternoon. to be continued... same bat-thread, same bat-channel, same bat-time, same bat-dog?

somewhat... I really need the extra funds to compensate for all the extra audio equip i have laying around. I buy too much. :crap: Credit is the devil I tell ya. What makes it even harder is that I'm solo. But then again, I can't see anybody helping me. I like things MY WAY.

My bro called me one day and said, "man, you should've called me, I wanted to come over and help build that box." He's always wanted to build a box but never has. And I thought... there's nothing I probably would let him do. :(

Bang Boxes tm "boxes that bang"

I know most people use "PVC" pipes to substitute aero ports, but the pipes i got is called "ABS". I couldn't see the difference between the two other than the color. I didn't see any 4" PVCs, but I saw that these ABS pipes were nice and tough.

That's what i've seen and heard....the tight thing is that i'll be picking it up, so he'll be able to hear it before parting with it.

It always ***** to put all that time into something and then have no idea how it sounds....i always wonder how it is when a builder sends out a box that they would never hear. Waiting for that feedback must be suspenseful (unless your James Bang and you know you build good boxes...lol).

so far that's happened only once, because eLa didn't start his install yet. Maybe i'll hit him up and see if he's done so i can hear that 12" XXX w/ 2.5cubes @ 32hz. :yumyum:

That has to be a sweet sounding box....i'd love to hear that as well. I don't know where ela lives or if he's down, but maybe we can listen to both boxes side by side to get a better idea of how the idmax's compare with the XXX's....just a thought.

I can throw the box in my car right away as my subs are sitting in a temp box right now...already amped and wired down to one ohm....so you'll be able to hear it right away if you want when i pick up the box. It'll be a direct swap (except this one will fit perfect).

Can't help it....it happened again...lol. I've just been trying to decide...carpet, vinyl, or paint? The back of the box is going to fit the slant of my rear seats perfectly, so it won't be visible (since i don't have fold-downs). The top and sides will be slightly visible (if at all). The only thing that will really be showing is the face plate....im was thinking black spray paint, but that might not do this box justice.

You can stare at it all you want after you pick it up. Just hit me up when you're ready. Later on today, I'm gonna use my cousin's IDmax to fit it, predrill the screws, and apply the weather stripping just right. it'll be ready b4 8.

lol....thanks a lot James. I will definitely be down there no later than 8 to pick that up.

I had a question though....did you want my old temp box? I bought it off ebay and it's garbage compared to what you build...it's one of those prefabbed ported boxes that's supposedly 4 cubes. The reason i ask is because ill probably end up smashing it or just throwing it away.

Thanks guys ... and girl for all the great comments. They really keep me going, building wise. Part of my threads' purpose are to encourage those to start building their own enclosures, seeing all the steps taken and all. or to pay me to build it ;) :p: Though it can be difficult, it's also fun and rewarding.

It's always nice when a builder documents the process and takes pictures along the way....it shows patience and a great appreciation to detail. Every step has to be finished and done right (people on the forums can be extremely critical). The fact that you put the pics up for everyone to critique shows the confidence and the quality of your build....Best $110 i'll ever spend... :thumbupw:

James Bang

I went out and bought the terminal cups just this morning and am waiting for it to cool down outside. Also it'll be a little bit harder to do since my router broke during the build (stupid bit broke and the rest won't want to come out).

3onDubs
04-18-2006, 05:42 PM
I hate it when that happens....That happened to me with an air nibbler when i was cutting holes in my door metal to mount my speakers. The top snapped off and i was half way done with the last hole. I had to use tin snips and nearly pulled all the skin off my hand....******.

If it's too difficult to put the cups in, you can just drill a tiny hole for speaker wire to go through and then seal around the wire....i know that this box deserves nothing less than terminal cups, but im just saying if it's too difficult without the bit. (doesn't make a difference to me).

James Bang
04-18-2006, 05:51 PM
it shouldn't be too difficult. I just gotta use my jig saw now. The bit broke when i was doing the sub cutout and I finished it w/ my jig.

the thing about using the jig is that I have to cut a hole for it to start.

same specs huh? that's cool, twins. That 3D sketchup is practically a free plan. good luck w/ the build, soul05.

3onDubs
04-18-2006, 06:39 PM
Why the same specs soul? The reason i went with that specific slant is because that's the exact slant of my rear seats. The bottom depth of my trunk is exactly 7" more than the top depth. Is that how the trunk is that ur building it for? If not, you can easily change the dimensions so that the box itself is not so deep. Many trunks might not be able to accomodate the height and depth. You probably already know all of this, but im just saying.

my friend has 2 idq12s and is selling me one of them. im actually going down to LA next week to pick it up. So he asked me to build a box for him since I was going to build one for myself. My box is 1.5 cubic feet @ 28, and he said that would be ok, cuz itll just be twice the cuts. No biggie though, im getting the idq for 100, but after i give him the box, ill get it for around 60 or so.

my friend doesnt even have a car anymore, he totalled his a few years ago. but he did manage to take his subs and amp out a few days before. He'll probably buy a car, and the box will most likely fit that one too. its about 34x14x11.5. the area i wanted to put it in my trunk was 38x18..i wanted to use more trunk space so i made the depth small too.

So is this box w/ the same specs for two IDQ's? If so, I think that's kind of big for IDQs. I suggest sealing them. I don't think porting IDQs will do them justice. With IDQs, keep them SQ. ...IMO of course. <--(flame-retardant)

James Bang

ok, if anyone cares, here are the terminals.

Since my router broke, kind of, I had my drill play his role. Bad acting skills IMO:http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a11/mobster909/dual%20IDmax%20box/04-18-06_1628.jpg

first I used a regular drill bit so the router bit (forgot the name) can fit it.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a11/mobster909/dual%20IDmax%20box/04-18-06_1629.jpg

then I replace the drill bit w/ the router bit, which is made to cut side to side, instead of up-n-down like a drill bit. then I made these cuts so my jig saw can have room to do it's duty. yes i know... I don't know what i'm talking about but whatever works.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a11/mobster909/dual%20IDmax%20box/04-18-06_1631.jpg

After the cuts, I applied some weather strips:

I'd say those are good acting skills....that turned out perfect imo.

I'm probably not going to carpet or vinyl the box...i think ill just leave it as is. I like way it looks and it wouldn't bother me to leave it.

its for 1 idq...followed the specs on the id webpage. i was going to use a sealed box, but my friend whom im building the box for said that it sounded prety good in a ported box, so im like why not.

How wide, deep, and tall

What car were you tryin to put it in? lol
it's a wedge type box, back slanted so it could be pushed back to the seats.
16.5" high x 30" wide x 28" bottom depth x 20.6" top depth. Couldn't get into his BMW, forgot what year/model, but it's one sweet lookin ride.
325i i think...not sure. Im not good w/ car models.

man we tried every way possible to get that **** in there. After almost 2 hours, we threw in the towel.

now the box has some nicks and dents, but still all good.

hehe... I'm still kinda noobtastic and this is my 4th system... in any case 8.something cu ft was too big even for the SUV... a little cutting here and there + LOTS of wood glue solves the situation though

haha, I remember seeing your thread.

If anything I would much rather build another enclosure. Also, there is someone else iinterested in the box. Hopefully it'll fit into his vehicle (Acura Integra, hatchback i believe)

It's a 2004 325i......without the fold down seats. I can take the back seats out easily, but there is a big metal plate seperating the car from the trunk (German "safety" feature....keeps all the bass in the trunk). I was actually considering cutting this metal piece, but we both agreed that building a new box would be MUCH wiser than hacking up the car.

@James....i think i cried a little on the way home...lol. That box was PERFECT in every way, shape, and form. Yesterday i felt like a the dumb kid trying to get the circle block in the square hole.

Maybe...it's up to James at this point. I definitely owe him for this box because he did all the work basically for nothing. If he would be willing to build me another box, i'd definitely compensate him for both.

:wallbash: = us trying to get the box in...

That **** pounded though, rumbled the crap out me garage

Yeah it did...kept setting off the car alarm...lol. You know what i was just thinking...if we took anything off the height of the box, how would the aeroports fit on the same face plate as the subs? Port the sides? Would that have the same effect?

EDIT: Ok, i just did a bunch of calculations.

I'm pretty sure that i can fit a box that has these dimensions into the trunk opening:
W: 30"
D: 24"
H: 13.5" (will give me 3/4" on each side of the sub's outer ring after it's mounted)

The volume of that box would be 4.45 cu. ft. before port and sub displacement....i don't know what the best way to port this would be, but im thinking that if the box is a single chamber, then we can have the round ports in the middle of the faceplate (in between the subs)...one on the top and one on the bottom....would this work?

I'll definitely build another one. Just because it'll be for IDmax's. Also 3onDubs is a very cool guy. I would give him a good feedback even though the transaction didn't go through. Once you get that cardboard box done and see what fits, get back to me.

I was thinking that we could have the two subs share the same airspace and have the ports in the middle of the two.

I'll say go w/ a shorter depth and a lil more height. After measuring yesterday, ~21"ish depth seems good.

Craigslist, ebay, and classified section should get this baby out of your garage. I mean the craftsmenship alone will sell the box.

3onDubs
04-19-2006, 02:07 PM
And shipping alone will make it not worth selling...lol....that box is HEAVY, and it would probably be more worth it to sell it locally.

If anyone is local...this box is a good reason to go out and buy two max's or two xxx's. Just listening to the box outside of the car made me want to axe up my car in order to get it to fit....lol.

James is also a very cool guy. I paid him to build me the box, but he did much more than that....and didn't end up taking any money. He helped me for over two hours try and wrestle the box in....and was patient with my messy-*** wiring.

@James: Thanks a lot bro...i appreciate that. I was thinking the same thing about sharing the air space. I think those dimensions i just gave might work, but i just have to try it out with the cardboard to make sure (im definitely not gonna screw up twice...lol). Oh yeah....and sorry for killing your evening yesterday :crap:

@James: I was thinking about it and it's pretty messed up what i did. I had you build a box (that I gave the measurements for) and you accrued all the costs and labor.....and then it didn't fit (which is my fault for not checking first), and your left with the box.

What I should have done was buy the box as agreed upon and then see if I can turn around and sell it on my own (since that shouldn't be your problem)....i was thinking that if you'd build me a second box, i can come down and pick both of them up. Let me know what you think  .

it's alright. There's someone interested in the box. I'm just hoping it'll fit in his trunk, and it's to his preferec specs too. He has a hatch Integra. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Alright for sure....but if it doesn't fit, ill take it. Also, did you get a chance to look at those specs?

James Bang
04-20-2006, 04:16 PM
You're PM box is full man. well those specs are good. 2.1 cubes max's would do fine. Do you have the port lengths?

3onDubs
04-20-2006, 06:38 PM
Oh snap...i was wondering why i wasn't getting any pm's...lol...I'll fix that.

The port lengths were the only thing i didn't have because i don't know how to calculate that. The other port lengths that i gave you (for the 5 cube box) were given to be by someone else a long time ago.

I'm guessing it would be the same as the last box's ports minus an inch on each...just guessing though.

James Bang
04-20-2006, 08:19 PM
i'll try to figure it out

for a 4.1 cubed box, w/ 2 4" ports, the lengths should be 13.25" according to http://www.psp-inc.com

3onDubs
04-21-2006, 10:40 AM
I just checked out that site as well. Are they asking for the volume of the box before or after calculating port displacement?

I'm assuming before because you wouldn't know the port length yet otherwise....if so, the volume is 4.45 before displacement.

For that volume, i got 12" for the port length. (i didn't know that ports should get longer when the volume gets smaller <--- told you i was a noob)

EDIT: Also, with the face plate measurements (13.5" X 30"), do you think that both ports can fit in between the subs? (i'm guessing it'll be a tight squeeze).

James Bang
04-21-2006, 10:51 AM
w/ the width of 30" there'll be a lot of room for the ports. I see them stacked vertically. like this | o : o |

For sure...that's how i pictured it.

3onDubs
04-21-2006, 06:19 PM
Do you have a sedan or a coupe? I have a sedan and 30" is the limit on the width because of those little ledges that stick out towards the back of the trunk. You could build a box to span the whole width, but your box would need to have cut outs in the back for those ledges so that it can sit flat on the trunk floor. <-- overkill imo, but probably the only way to fit a box that's greater than 4.5 cu. ft.

Unless your planning on building a huge box, the possiblities are endless. I've seen some nice walls built around the face plate to make it sit flush with the trunk....combine that with a nice false floor for the amps and you have yourself a perfect setup worthy of vinyl or paint.

I have to admit that I just copied the design for a 4ft^3 box.

Sure, I like seeing e-boxes. Email is Bolognablake(at)gmail(dot)com :D

Mine is going to be 4ft^3, tuned to 30hz. That'll make the box 31.5" wide / 17.5" tall / 17.5" deep.

James i was wondering if you had any ideas for a box for a 2006 chevy crew cab silverado, for 2 treo ssi 12's, and how much it would cost if you could make it.
