View Full Version : Rainbow power handling

Hey all. I'm REALLY leaning toward the SLC's to replace my Alpine Type R's. With a stroke of luck my budget will allow for Germaniums, so this is kind of general questions regarding Rainbow. I know they're rated relatively low for power handling, 100w RMS for SLC's and for the Germaniums. The question is, will they take more? I know the Boston Pro's I was looking at before the rainbows basically required twice the listed RMS rating to really perform, but everyone says the Rainbows shine with little power, but will they take more? I'm looking at possibly putting about 125w to each side. For now I'm looking at a passive setup, I don't really have the knowledge to go active (yet, gotta do some research), which I'll probably stick with if I get the SLC's, but the Germaniums lend themselves more to an active setup (although I'm probably going to run these off of a two channel, since I don't run rear fill). Let the opinions fly. Thanks.

I had 250 on my Professional's and they seemed to be fine before all the smoking, melting and the fire!!! No, but really you sould be able to power them to your liking. Power = control....do it baby!! Now that I mention it, they are for sale :greedy:

I'll tell you tommorrow about the Germaniums, but their instructions say 150w for the 265 and 300w for the 465. I'm running them on 4x50w ATM and am going to be bridging my amp to 2x140 tonight. They sound excellent even on the 4x50, but i think the woofers are really going to come into their own switched up to 2x140w. I've heard about people pushing double what i am going to be to them...though i dunno if that's a good idea ;) On the plus side, the germanium crossover's are freakin awesome and have thermal protection + overcurrent protection built in..not sure if the overcurrent and thermal applies to only the tweets or also the woofers.

I'm going to be posting a thread with my install and impressions tonight...
Going to be deadening my doors in a week or 3, so i'll have a direct comparison pre-deadened and post. Oughtta rock.

BTW, why leaning more towards active setup on the germaniums? The x-over's on the germaniums have a LOT of jumperable options including x-over adjustment from 2.2hz to 2.6hz and 4 levels of tweet attenuation..
And BTW, you can't go active with a 2ch amp...you'd need 4ch (or 2 2ch amps), so you could x-over your tweets separate from your woofers.

125 on tap per side for SLC's will only get you some serious midbass kick! They can handle it.

You won't ever see that amount of power while playing music. Give them plenty, cause headroom never hurt.

I send about 170 wrms per side to my 2003 Rainbow SLCs, they're only rated 80wpc. Hasn't hurt 'em yet.

Heya! Back again! Got the rainbow germaniums hooked up to 2x140 tonight. ****. They are freakin' loud now, and oh so clear. Crossed over @ 63hz/12db i don't hear any bad things from them yet...and they got loud enough i had to stand a few feet back to keep my ears from hurting :-P Sounded good from there though. LOL. Put up a thread about my experiences.
