I have the option to buy both a brand new cd8454 for $330 shipped or buy a brand new, sealed cda9835 + an eclipse eq2102 (dual 31 band equalizer) for $350-360 shipped.

I hope to be running a set of horns, which would be the better daily setup?

i think if you want everything in one definately the 8454 would have more tuning options but the 9835 with the 30 band eq would be better in overall flexbility. again if you can fit the 30 band eq i'd go with the alpine setup, if you just want an HU with as many options go with the eclipse.

how much better in terms of overall flexibity is the 8454?

Which is the overall better headunit? Easy to see? Ease of use?

If it matters at all, I can get the Alpine for ~$40 cheaper than the Eclipse

overall better unit in my opinion would be the 9835 easier and more versatile to me

just comparing the eclipse 8454 and the alpine 9835 alone. the eclipse has a 10 band peq compared to 5 band peq on the alpine 9835. another important advantage the eclipse has over the alpine is real time tuning. meaning when you change crossovers slopes and pts and also changing stuff on the peq, you can actually listen to the changes right there and then. you can turn up the volume in the crossover menu and peq menu. but on the alpine you would change your crossover slopes and pts, and then go all the way back to the main menu to turn up the volume. i'm sure its not too bad but its just convenient having not to go back and forth when tuning.

but if you would get that alpine 9835 and 30 band eq, i'd go for that. more flexbility and bands.

i had always been a diehard eclipse fan, but after getting the alpine 9835 i won't go back. imo the alpine is more flexabile since it's satelite ready and ipod ready. it has all the features as the eclipse, except for a smaller eq. i never seen the need for these huge eq's anyways.
