Search in your friend:)

I basically wanted a Seas Excel 8" . The W21 Excel was made in 4ohm many years ago but it is RARE as hell to find one, nevermind two. I happen to know someone that has one, and will not part with it in hopes another will turn up in the future.

So searching for that led to a thread on ECA. It turns out this CW21 driver was last available back in 2001 as a raw driver. Since then only 3 people that i know of -all at ECA- Jeff(werewolf), Jun (technobug) and I have had MobilSQ contact Seas in Norway to have these drivers made per order. So , in a sense they are not custom drivers as in the sense that I had them made my way or anything, but they can only be handwade per order in this fashion as its not a production driver.

It did take 6 weeks, give or take and cost was no different for asking prices on a pair of Excel 8's from Madisound.

Yea but Lotus is Seas flagship line isn't it? I mean since it's not a production driver what's the comperable sister driver in the Excel line? I see the mangnesium cone 8 ohm driver - W22, but yours is an aluminum cone, 4 ohm, and can handle 150 watts and play up to 2.5k

Lotus would be the flagship automotive line. Excel the flagship home line. The Excels and smaller current Lotus are mag cones- for whatever reason this model is not. But otherwise I think the Excel and Lotus lines are very much comparable in terms of quality/performance- just for diff realms. I mean it would be a shame to put some Excels and those purdy plase plugs in an car door to not appreciate their aesthetics and deal with the worst the automotive environment has to offer.

Either way should make for the strong edgy, snappy and detailed response. I doubt I'm taking this puppy past 700-800hz in my 3way, but good to know I can play around with other ideas. The Morels got me plenty of output and midbass, what I'm looking to achieve is better precision at those frequencies and should see an improvement in the lower vocal range. The Morels no doubt are great midbasses in a traditional midbass application, but I'm using large dome midranges in which I need a little help into the lower midrange areas.

I havent gotten the chance to get on them yet or throw my reference tracks at them, only listened for a minute or two. The lower vocal range did clear up tho.

Cant comment on the bass or bass quantity quite yet, i'll be sure to do so at the end of the week after I have some good hours on them. I'm sending them a close to 300 x2 and they are 4ohm drivers so i'll take my time before i open up the can of woop as s...

Lol...well i suppose its 'my' reference track ...but I'm eager to test these mids with a hidden drum track on the last track of last The Roots album. I used this track to show off the Morels at the meets and it brought out what they could do best- big sound up front, great extension. I'm so familiar with what to expect on this track to see if the Lotus can hang in terms of output and see if I improved the sound of the snares and bassline clarity.

Ha...hey man from what people been telling I dont think I can truly asses how good these things are right away. Lots of difference sources claim they take a lil while to break in and the they get better and better over time. We'll see..
