well when i tried to put in my new AA mids they wouldnt fit in the door without moving the window a bit and i dont want to mess with that so i am building a pair of kick pods to house these beasts.
i have got one started so far and hope to ge tsome more progress tomorrow but i have to buff the hell out of my car so i am not sure how much time i will have.

i like what i have seen so far but one has some kind of noise, it isnt tensil slap i really dont know what it is.
when i get more time to mess with it i might be able to figure out what it is.
and maybe stop it.

well i got a layer of glass and alot of resin thrown on there and i remember why i hate to use chop mat.
i hate it with a passion.
cloth pwns chop mat, it is soo much easier to work with.

Mat is good to use during the first layers of fiberglassing then you use cloth, that way its easier on you sanding and finishing. Mat is stronger but sloppy.

~Magick_Man~
03-12-2006, 08:36 PM
well it dried alot faster than i was expecting so i got it all sanded up again and i dont think i will put any more glass on.

i still need to figure out what finish to use.
i want to use matching carpet but i doubt i could get it to fit to the curves.
so i will probably paint it with some textured finish so i dont have to make it really smooth.

well i tossed a speaker in the pod and with 120 ish watts playing test tones i was having plenty of tensil slap :(
i might try a small piece of felt or something to stop it.
i dont see any other way to keep it from doing it since the leads are so long.
im gonna email AA and see what they recommend.
and the imaging was pretty bad.
but when i get my dayton tweeters and the other AA mid in i hope it improves alot.
the one i messed with sounded really nice, i need alot of polyfill because i dont have a whole lot of mid bass.

but these are all little things that i will address after i get the 2nd one built and installed.

i just got the first badly done coat of bondo thrown on there.
i will probably need 2-3 more to get it all smooth.
and i am not going to be able to start on the other pod today because i am lazy and waited too long so i dont have enough time before i go to work.
will get it started tomorrow because i dont work tomorrow (i hope)

well i have 3 coats of bondo on it now and it is sanded to 180 grit.
i still need to touch up in a couple places but it is pretty much done.
hopefully i will get the other one built tomorrow and maybe get it sanded down but i doubt i will get that far.

my question is how are you going to mount it. Are you going to place this on some carpet or what? its been a mystery thats been troubling my mind for an eternity, how to mount a kick pod.

well i started with the factory kick panel and built off that so i can retain the factory mounting.
and it wedges in there pretty good even without clipping in because of theextra material i added to the edges of it.

well i finally got the second one built this evening and i threw it in my car because i was tired of listening to one speaker.
and i must say that i was a little worried how it would image when i was just using the passenger speaker.
but i threw the driver side pod and speaker in.
and ran the auto TA/EQ on my deck and i must say i have never heard anything that imaged this well.
i really dont know what to say about it except it is **** near perfect.
and this is running the AA mids and kappa tweeters off the kappa crossover.
i am not sure if i even want to mess with switching to active now since i would cut the power to the speakers by half. from 125 per side to 65 per speaker

i dont have any pictures of it but i will have some tomorrow when i take it back out to bondo that pod. and it will need alot of bondo in some places :crap:

i might toss the cdt hd mids into the pods to compare the two if i get time tomorrow.

~Magick_Man~Nice job man. The factory mounting makes me drool. I made some kicks during the summer, and couldn't get the imaging to sound right with my kicks mounted in place of the factory ones. I also went sealed for my Z6's, but after 5 months or so of listening to them, it seems like the sealed kicks are just a tad too small. So, basically, they are just kick pods instead of panels. I covered them carpet to match the inside, but they do look a little funky, but they sound perfect  Best components I've ever heard :D I can up some pics of my kick "pods" complete if anyone cares to see them.

one of them still has a bit of tinsel slap when crossed over at 50 hz.
at 63 i am not noticing it.

overall i love them alot.

Maybe that's why I've never noticed any tinsel slap as I have mine crossed at 80Hz - 2500Hz per Chad from AA. Also running the Vifa tweets from AA at 2500Hz and up. Both are mounted in the doors of a 2000 Altima. Running active and I'm VERY happy with them.

I'm pushing 75 watts to them with the gain at 1/3 at best, any higher and they break up, but they sound very clear and get loud off that power.
