I was reading about Aeroports and from what I have read most people agree that they are better than square ports. I am thinking about just doing a simple square port for my daily box and making another SPL box with aeroports (depending on what you guys recommend).

I also read that if the ports stick out (ugly looking) they add more SPL that way. Im not sure how that works. I saw a pic (couldn't find it) on these forums a few weeks ago of a 10" L7 (think it was a L7) that had aeroports, popping it. Everybody thought it was ugly but it did get incredibly loud for a 10", which is what I want from my SPL box. Im not going to carpet it or any thing. It's going to be one ugly, loud box.

I'll see if I can find the pics. Are aeroports better for SPL?

Well, in theory, yes they are. You just cant get the same port area in a given area... and the ports sticking out just conserve box volume by not taking up space in the box (obviously). They wouldnt add to SPL in their own (or atleast I wouldnt think so-doesnt make sense), but that extra volume I guess could help a bit for a bigger peak.

I used precision ports in my box for them memphis PRs I use to run and they work **** good man. I had 2 4" ports and them subs with 500 watts kicked *** in that box. I have yet to hear any setup running at that wattage up to 1000 watts that got anywhere near that box and subs.

as for them sticking out thats mainly done by people when they are adjusting the port length to test it. its easier to change pipes on the outside than having to remove them. Some leave them out so they dont have to calculate the ports total area it would use in the box and get a more acurate tuning

well doesn't it make sense that the outside ports only mean more box volume?

having them stick out also helps with air flow

I have never seen some one run a box with aeroports in the local competitions. Thats why I am not familiar with them at all.

hmm I never thought of it but yeah i guess your right cause inside the box would be a perfvect square except the sub itself.

pros:
super simple to put in
You can use an online calculator to find the right length
Reuseable
Cons:
Limited mounting positions
price considering most slot ports are made from scrap MDF

The pic is a TCAB, i have my ports like that in my enclosure for my 8, its really tacky

 That was your box with the L7 and the aeroports? Didn't know.

No. That wasn't my box.

It's not a big secret in the SPL world.

TONS of people have ported enclosures with aero-ports on the exterior.

I happen to have a few.

nGOh. Is it true though that you have a better chance/advantage if having a box with aeroports instead of square ports to put out more SPL?

If money and enclosure size isnt a problem then they are a great option.
But not everyone ( like me) has the money or the enclosure size.
Heck, i use my ports from the plastic wrap rolls from my work.

wut !!!
Hell, that wasnt half as ghetto as i was htinking of doing... that was a long time ago though.

Once i saw a guy use beer bottles he cut the bottom off of and made kinda horn lookin things and used those... it was creative, and sounded OKAY... but looked so ghetto

An Aeroport has 2 flares on either end.

aero port's for me atleast made my 15" l7 louder and a lot less port noise and over all just sounded cleaner.

ah.... so they are more efficient ports im assuming?

Eldorado

phantom240
03-09-2006, 11:00 PM
okay... so how do you install them if it has flares on either end?

Eldorado
03-09-2006, 11:08 PM
Glue the flares on
Cut a hole the diameter of the smaller flare and screw it in place
The other flare has a flange you use to secure the port

phantom240
03-09-2006, 11:26 PM
ah so one side has a bigger flange?

Eldorado
03-09-2006, 11:27 PM

Can you explain your choice? I thought it was one 6" per sub.

I ment it to be used to hold the flares onto the tube. I use duct tape, works like a charm.

If you can't duct it, **** it!

the 6'' aero is for my 2.8 cu ft box for the12W7.

the 4'' aero is for my 1.3 cu ft box for the RL-i 8

I see. Is that correct, one 6" per sub? That would make an extremely long ports for a pair. Perhaps one for inch per sub and one six inch.
