My friend is looking for a cheap, but good quality HU for under $100. He is not going to upgrade in the future, he just wants something that can play cds with mp3 playback.

Shoot some recommendations. Thanks.

The JVC KDG310 is a solid HU with MP3. I had the KDG300 which was then upgraded to the 310 and it was a very solid performing HU for the price. It's the only thing I can think of in that price range.

i dont think there are very many mp3 head units for under 100 dollars. never used this one but ive heard good things about clarion. could probably find some used mp3 cd players on ebay for cheap made by like alpine and pioneer if you like those brands better.

Weeelll.......from one authrorized source we have two options (don't treat this as a be all, end all list by any means ~ this is the only place i looked)

The Dual XDM6820 (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-jKsnaOllTo8/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=070XDM6820)
I have no clue if this is even worth the $90 bucks they're asking for it (as I'm a bit dubious about Dual in general) but it's an option nonetheless.

or for another $10:

The Panasonic CQ-C1303U (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-jKsnaOllTo8/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=133C1303)
Certainly of these two options (the only <$100 .mp3-capable CD players @ Crutchfield) I would go with the Panasonic 'cause my initial feeling is that given a choice between an entry-level Dual, which is almost a redundant statement, and an entry-level Panasonic I would want the Panasonic.
