we're using 3" speakers because that particular cone has the best qualities for our room, which happens to be quite large. the mains are tuned to 60hz. this creates a flat response all the way through to 50hz, which then becomes subwoofer territory. of course this is all being done on paper, so real life results will naturally be different. the goal for me and my father's project is to build an HT that is astounding, aesthetically pleasing, and looks like $$$$$$$$$, but costs $$. i'm selling my DD and i'll sell the dayton. my dad is going to buy my PE 1000w amp for 325 off of me, so that way i can get a good 700 or so to make a new room setup.

:yumyum:

no that's what i was saying, no 6.1 for us, and the room is quite large, just the actual viewing space isn't. :)

the amount of information that the "imaging" of two surround speakers is pretty much the same as having a dedicated rear. denon's newest receiver has 9.1 surround: two mains, one center, two surrounds, two other surrounds that create two channels from the rear in a 6.1, and then two side surrounds = useless.

adam71

wats gimmicky?

Don't listen to him..he's pretty much an idiot.

I do have a new Denon receiver. The AVR-3805. It has 2 sets of surround speakers.......not 3. It is 7.1 receiver and the MAIN surrounds have a Aor B setting meaning you can choose between two different types of main surrounds but NOT run them at the same time. The REAR surrounds are what make the 6 & 7 channels of the 7.1. I have a set of rear surrounds and on a regular Dolby Digital sdtk I can't really notice that big of a difference with the rears on but in a movie ecncoded with DTS ES or Dobby Digital EX I can really tell a difference with them on. People can call it gimmicky or as you put it ...worthless....but it is a really nice feature if you have a receiver with great processing. Guess what I'm saying is "don't knock it til you try it". Thats all.

As i said, the frequency band it's playin in seemed to have a smoother graph with a larger Vb. not only that but, i needed a more efficient alignment and after some preliminary plotting, this enclosure let's the woofer drop low enough before it bottoms out.

Lemans, how exactly do your blades get owned? Do you steel blades or carbide tipped ones? I was just wondering because I have yet to have a blade owned by a saw.

PV Audio
01-01-2006, 03:21 PM
it's the stock hitachi blade, it isn't carbide, and it doesn't like cutting at 45 degrees apparently :D

i might get a pic up, but i really just need to work on them. imagine a blade at 0 degrees that torques to 20 or so by the time it's on the wood...

they're really ******, GOD i miss my table saw so much (even though it was a POS)

Eugenics

PV Audio

eh, the saw is a great tool, the basic blades are not; they're weak. the table saw i want to buy is like 300~ (hitachi). my neighbor who is a woodworker has had the same model for around 2 years with no problems. my drill is a medium duty hitachi as well; not a makita, but still strong as hell.

For the table saw, get the best fence you can get, and extend the table to the right side to atleast 40 inches, and an outfeed table prob about 2 feet or maybe longer. If you do that, you will enjoy it. Also, buy a good quality miter gague, its a must.

I don't know about their table saws, but Hitachi makes a **** fine compound miter...if you get a sliding compound one, you can use it almost like the old radial arm saws out to around 11".

Oh, and Freud blades FTW :)

Use the cheap **** for basic rip work. Spend the chedda for when it needs to look good.

JimJ
01-01-2006, 05:58 PM
Oh, and re: preamps...

A preamp (whether solid state or "hollow state") serves two basic functions (three, if you count draining your wallet and giving you a bigger e-penii as another)...improving the impedance mismatch between source and power amplifier, and providing some way to attenuate/control the level going into the amplifier, which may not have that control.

High power amplifiers might not need a lot of gain in the preamp stage, which is why you see cathode followers and other buffer stages used that don't have a lot of gain. Passive preamps like I described that provide no gain at all are used by some people, but it depends on the PA you have.

ballstothewall
01-01-2006, 06:26 PM

Since y'all seem to enjoy pixxors, here's some more. I posted a thread in the box building section on how to cut square cutouts well. I thought about breaking out my router guide that came with the router, but it didn't have the reach for this enclosure. I thought and thought about what to do, then i finally said screw it; i'm going to use my jigsaw free hand. As i was walking to get the saw, I looked at my wood pile and spied my circular saw's cue piece (it's 1.5" something and you lay it down along the line and put a piece of wood on the outside edge of it and the blade then lines up with the line when you remove the cue piece and the 2nd piece of wood is clamped. Straight cuts for 20 cents.), so i decided to make a basic guide using the cue piece clamped to the box. I'm fairly impressed with how it turned out for the first time :)

Anyway, on to the pix:

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/751/PICT0679.jpg

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/6821/PICT0680.jpg

The edges are mdf "fluff" that I hadn't sanded yet (I snapped my good bit (she'd been good :( ) so I used my old skil bit which blows).

And one of the driver in its new home for a test fit (titebond I for size compar.).

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/8/PICT0681.jpg

Surrounds' and center's progression. They were fully painted about 15 minutes after I took the pictures (last coat drying as I type this).

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/6403/PICT0678.jpg

:) Any comments or suggestions?

OH and I have a question for any woodworkers/carpenters/thylantyr :D

Is there a way to join wood and to have a strong joint without using screws to hold it? It's starting to be annoying to keep filling and filling. I was told to look into biscuits?? What are those?

Just use your router to make a rabbet joint, or a box corner joint or a tongue and groove joint or you could use a dowel joint. I wouldn't use biscuits unless your making furniture or a joint that doesn't need to be to strong. Does your school have wood shop? If so I would take it so you could learn about woodworking.

theres ALOT of different ways to do it..dove tails, biscuits, dowels, tongue and groove etc etc..

you could always start using nails, which is far less filling...or just not use nails or screws...

Well, I have just officially sold my Titantic to my dad, and I think that it'll suffice to say that the output is enormous. We have this large hanging mirroe, and it flexes like it's made of aluminum foil. This Seiko clock on the wall is bound to fall off.

This project keeps getting better and better.

So my dad comes in and I audition it to him with the sub facing the ceiling. He was in awe, so he agrees that we should keep the Dayton in there. Now, remember that it is facing the ceiling. So we're trying to flip it over, but my dad doesn't pick up his side. The feet sheared right off.

OH wait lemans! Are those circles even!?

No. Some ********** at PE told me that the cutout diameter of the ports incorrectly, and I don't have a Vernier caliper to see, so I had to do a little sanding. And yes, you can still see the wood through the primer. Why? I have no idea, I spent a week sanding and re-sanding so that it wouldn't happen. Balls.

No more painting for me.

ballstothewall
03-26-2006, 03:55 PM
Well, you could have double checked the cutout diamater of the ports by taking some time and doing a little math, you knew everything to figure it out (think easy algebra).

Or you could just say you took a little artistic liberty and have them off center to add a little to your design since everyone and their brother has ports and everything centered.

It doesn't matter anyway since when the ports are actually in they are completely even.

InhumanAcura

you have to hit the cut edges with a hot batch of resin or run a skim of filller and then a glaze over the entire box, then hit it with a block to get it to look like one piece../run-on

ill try to get some pics of the crap ive been building on and off for a while up tomorrow.

PV Audio
03-31-2006, 11:46 PM
Inhuman, you're a life saver. I'll seal with resin on the next go around. How do you suggest that I sand it though? I've never worked with fiberglass (at least not where I've had to sand it), so would a regular sanding disk work?

InhumanAcura
04-03-2006, 10:47 PM
id go the filler/glaze route if youve never really messed with resin/fg..have a light hand when youre sanding..

PV Audio
04-04-2006, 12:25 PM
Wtf is glaze?

Darth Audio
04-04-2006, 01:48 PM
Glaze is an automotive body filler. It's usually applied over bondo that's been sanded already but has some pinholes in it. Works really good and it's easy to sand. There's nothing to mix like bondo it's just in a tube. Never used it on MDF though, interesting idea. If you go to NAPA or an automotive paint supply store and ask for it they will know what you are talking about.

I like the galant pretty good. Haven't had any issues w/ mine yet. Do you have a 4 or 6 cyl? I've heard the guys w/ 4's say they have a lot of issues. Really the only thing mechanically I've done to mine is replace a cam seal.
