well i purchased a PG tantrum 600.4 to power my boston acoustic pros. the amp was bridged to 300 x2. the comps were sounding amazing. i then decided to install my sub. well the bass from my pros was louder then the sub. i figure well why don't i try a 50 hz. tone? put it in crank it up hear a pop smell something burning. guess what? my comps are blown now. so what should i do now? finding comps capable of handling 300 watts rms aren't cheap. should i go active and get some mids and tweeters? i think i'll contact BA and see how much to fix them.

:hilariou:

Sorry, to laugh at your misfortune.......but man that was a stupid thing to do :hilariou:

Anyways.....search around on egay. You may be able to find replacement mids for cheap. Were these the new Pro60's or the older Pro6.5's??

the older pro 6.5's.

all i had to do was turn up the non-fader and the sub sounds great. both mids totally fried. my car still stinks from the burnt coils.

bummer dude, not a ton of 6.5's like 50hz anyway

And note that it's only for the mids.

Aye that *****. 50 hz is a little low for comps isn't it? Whats the rms rating on those boston? should have adjusted the gain to match your Boston's rating!

it looks like i might have to bid on them.

i was playing the tone for my sub. the xover on the comps were at 63 hz. and the amp was set with a dmm. i played the tone for my sub and not the comps and ended up frying the comps. they sounded great the 3 minutes before i blew them.

what do you guys think about a set of cdt es-07 comps to possibly replace these? give them about 300 watts rms a piece

Meh.......I think everyone knows my feelings of CDT by now ;)

Do you still have that DX-28 I sold ya?

For $29/ea you can buy the CDT ES-07 "super audiophile" tweeter: http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=514902.8637&pid=1325, or find some other comparable tweeter

Pick up a mid that performs just as good if not better than the ES-07 mids, like the Seas CA18RNX, L18RNX/P or G18RNX/P: http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?exact_match=yes&product=SEW&cart_id=514902.8637 ...or, again, you could pick up some other mid that performs just as well such as the Dayton RS180, etc.

Go active with them and your amp and have just as good if not better performance at a fraction of the cost. Even if you didn't have the DX-28, I think you could find another active xover and build a killer frontstage as good or better than the CDT 07 lineup for much less cost.

i sold it before i ever used it. i had plans for a great big system but ditched them cause i wanted a laptop for school. my PG tantrum 600.4 has a 3-way xover so i guess i'll do that and go that way. from my past experience with cdt i really like there tweeters so i'll go with those tweeters. i'll look into those mids.

Ok, not really all that close... but still funny.

being that the mids are only 8 ohms will they be loud enough? my amp does 75 watt rms at 4 ohms. i like this cheaper DIY option better lol.

i think i'll go with the seas CA18RNX and the vifa tweets. the only problem is the 3-way xover on my amp, only goes up to 800 hz. that means i would have to high pass the tweets at 800 hz. so how could i fix it to set them at like 2 khz or whatever they should be at?

buy my xover.

ok i'm pretty sure i'm gonna go with the seas mids and vifa tweets. now should i mount the tweet next to the mid in my door pod or in the A-pillar?

squeak9798
12-20-2005, 06:59 PM
Next to the mid.

Unless using an extremely high xover point (7khz+), you want the tweeter as close to the mid as possible.

ok. that's what i thought. i'll build them into the pod.

this maybe silly, but how would i know how to set my gains at 8 ohms? i just get this feeling my front stage won't be loud enough

skeptikal
12-20-2005, 08:40 PM
The same way you set your gain at any other Ohm load. The speaker will still be clipping @ 8ohms as if it would at 1 ohm.

Eugenics

could always get z6's

but i don't know how much power my amp does at 8 ohms.

but i don't know how much power my amp does at 8 ohms.

Presume it's half of what it does at 4ohm.

sqrt(75*4) = 17.32V

sqrt(150*2) = 17.32V

sqrt(37.5*8) = 17.32V

Seeing a trend?

so will these perform well in sealed enclosures with only 38 watts? also thinking about a set of ology components. gotta a chance to trade my sub for them.

squeak9798
12-21-2005, 09:54 AM
I've never listened to the Ology component sets. I know the drivers he uses, the Dayton Reference series, are excellent speakers. But the sound of the set comes down to the design of the passive.

my search on them came up with someone comparing them to sony's and a lot of bickering :crap: i'll try to dig a little deeper

Have you looked at the PG elite 6's? They will take 300W, maybe not a 50 test tone though.. ;) Morels' and from the PG direct store with manufactures waranty. They also have some sets with the xover.

with the seas i'm just not sure if 38 watts per mid will be enough to keep up with my subs. i was thinking of going active, which would be 75 watts per driver or bridging the amp to a set of components which would be 300 watts rms x2

iceteebone
12-21-2005, 03:51 PM
also couldn't i bridge the 2 mids to the rear channels and tweeters to the front? then if i fade forward it'll be to the tweets and backwards to the mids? so then the 2 8 ohm drivers will present a 4 ohm load. is this silly or no?
