Right now i'm making 2 seperate tube-ported boxes for my shivas. Boxes are around 1.75cf tuned to 29hz. Currently i'm running 2 1.58cf Sealed Enclosures, so hopefully going ported will increase output and lowend. I'm no where near finished, but i took a few pics as i'm making it and here are a few. I'll keep you updated and take more pictures as the project continues.

Its being built in a building that stays at 40 degrees, so thats not possible.

I was told theres no such thing as TOO much glue:D

Also..I need advice on how to actually mount the PVC pipe to the box. SHould I just glue it, or screw it to the box somehow..maybe caulk it up a bit..? I'm still new to building boxes so any info helps.

(just an update..no pics this time)

Alright..I got another chance to work a little more on my boxes. Today I made cutouts for the subs and for the ports. Ran into a little bit of a problem..

When i cut the hole for the first port, it was too small. I figured I'd file it out untill it was a really tight fit. In an attempt to get that sucker in there..I hammered on it untill it fit. Only problem is I split out a little bit of mdf around it and i'm currently holding the pieces together with a little gorilla glue and a clamp.

Tomorrow I'm doing terminal cutouts and attempting to put in my pvc pipe port...along with securing the tops. Cant wait to hear what will happen to my shivas in these boxes..

Ummm, well you do know wood glue normally dries yellow, right?Yours is drying white (going by the pics). It's a liiiiiiittle too cold.

matt_martin87
12-03-2005, 07:05 PM
Is the box going to be affected majorly by the glue drying in cold temps?

If it is..i'm kinda screwed. All of this has been done in a shed kept at 40 degrees.

glue wont cure right if its too cold, read the bottle what temps does it say it needs to be.

..its too late now i guess and its my own fault for not checking the directions first.

Thats just another box building tip to add to my list now.

Finished box number one today.

Listened to it on a few songs and i think i have some port noise. I dont know what would've cause that. The port diameter is 3" and i left 3" of space between the pvc pipe and the back wall. I rounded off the edges on the port as well.

Anyone have any other idea as to why this is happening?

negativezeroz
12-04-2005, 10:37 PM
pics would help...

it could be that the enclosure is really small for it to be ported (idnk much about shivas so yeah..)

Finally, both boxes are finished.:) :) I've never felt so proud, even if it looks kinda bad from the outside(first box built by myself. Pics soon to come). Subs sound awesome except for a select few songs that just get too low.

The only thing that im concerned about right now is running the amp that i have too hard. It doesnt have a SSF and i dont want to risk blowing my subs. Think this should be a huge concern if im only running 125w to each?

hahaha wood shop was so fun though, i spent half my time cutting pieces of wood into smaller pieces of wood on the bandsaw, grinding wood into nothing on the sanders, and going into the glue drying room and breaking other peoples projects/stealing wood.

Get that skateboard outta there asap :)

Not bad; As far as securing those PVC ports and the glue issue; I used Great Stuff on my ports; and you could just resin over the box.

Yeah, some..but only on certain frequencies.

I'm considering exchanging my amp for a hifonics bx1000d, and i've heard that more power will increase the chance for port noise. I originally wanted to use 4" pvc to solve that problem, but that would've made the length of the port too long for my box.

I woulda thrown the subs in 1 box....but hey, that's just me and woulda saved ya a lotta work.

I did two separate just incase one would happen to blow, that way i'd have use of the good sub.

Thanks for all the comments you guys. More suggestions/tips or comments would be appriciated greatly.

would you guys recommend on sealing around the pvc hole? would it affect sound?

matt_martin87

I sealed around the outside edge of the port on the inside of the box. I can assure you there isn't any air getting out.

IIRC the glue bottle says everything (glue and wood) be above 70 degrees but it's been a while.

Very good for your first boxes.

BTW: The shivas can move some air so I don't doubt you have port noise.

just wanted to say this to the guy that said it should be just 1 box instead of 2, it probably wouldnt fit if the boxes were together, and its easier to squeeze in 2 smaller boxes than 1 big one

Nice work there but may I suggest putting a piece of MDF(cut to size & carpeted)underneath both enclosure so to close the gap, making look more like one box.Just my $.02 & send me a Bud Lite while ur at it....Happy Holidays

I would, but the way it is now, there's no moving the boxes any direction. The fit is unbelievably tight. Any bigger on the width or height and i'd be screwed.

"this buds for you." i dont know who said that but its all for me:D
