ok guys, starting on the dayton w00t! bought this mdf for 10.99 because it was "damaged in shipping". i looked it over, and i'm not worried. damage pics included. heres how we stand:

that's all for now, didn't take any more pics. all that isn't shown are two braces that were put in moments later.

i need ur guy's help for the finishing. what should i do? lacquer? enamel? veneer? wanting either white or black.

Nice work man... Why not go with Titebond III?
lol i would have gone with the woodshop's blend, but they were closed for some reason....anyway, i saw that the quart of II was actually cheaper than the smaller bottle of III. i actually have some III left over from milenko's SX15 box, but i don't want to use it on projects for me cause its $$$ :)

they have it on those retarded blue carts that are unbalanced. they put them on the lumber aisles. you just have ta look around, but they nearly ALWAYS have sheetrock here.

Get one of those drill/countersinking bits so you can pre-drill the screw holes so your
MDF doesn't split when driving the screw in -- as seen in your pics :)

ooh good tip bro, how much and where can u get those?

Home centers in the drill bit area. Just get the drill bit size that mates to the screws
you use. Not too big otherwise the screw won't bite, not too tiny otherwise the
wood splits. I can't really tell you how to do this, I just eye ball the drill next
to the screw and pick something that is smaller, perhaps a drill size that is about
the same size of the screw shaft only not threads. Try half the screw diameter.

The best way to do boxes if you axe me.

*Cut the wood and double check the dimension by holding it next to the wood
to glue to. Just hold it in place and do a quick eye check to make sure your cuts
are perfect.

*Predrill the wood with the countersinking bit, spread the holes out evenly.
Use a scrap piece of wood underneath to reduce chipout and so you don't
ruin the drill bit if you hit concrete. [if you are drilling the hole on the floor].

*Use some finish nails and pre-nail the areas between the holes you drilled.

*Add glue to both pieces of wood being nailed together.

*Have someone help you hold the wood while you nail the panel in place.

*Use the countersinking drill and redrill the hole, but now you drill deeper.

*Install the screws.

*Use a punch to hit the nail deeper and use putty to fill it.

This method probably doesn't make sense.

When you pre-nail and pre-countersink/drill, it makes the wood fit perfect without
wander. When you nail the wood first and have the wood held in place, the
wood will not drift as you use the hammer and the joint is in perfect alignment.

When you predrill next, the drill bit won't shift the wood panel because the
nails are already installed.

Plan B. If you feel skilled, skip the pre-drill step and do it last after you nail the wood.

These are extra steps but you will save alot of time on sanding because if you
do it right, there is very little. Just wipe off the excess glue with a damp rag
after you are done. Don't let it dry in blobs.

Do you have a table saw?

piece of **** router crapped out on me. SCREW YOU lowes for saying "oh it's excellent and durable if you don't use it everyday!" **** that, i use it probably once every week to two weeks for the past few months and i THOUGHT that it was good until when i was rounding the port on milenko's box and it started getting weak. THE **** THING BARELY SPINS NOW. i was cutting out the circle and it started getting slower and slower. I ALWAYS USE THE SAME BIT AS WELL and the ****er just wouldn't go further. so, i punched the 3/4 way cut ring UP, so as not to rip off the back of the mdf and then jigsawwed around the circle and dremeled and block sanded the protrusions. ANYONE WITH THE SKIL ROUTER PACK: sell it before you use it alot, because you are then out 100 dollars. some may say, "well just send it back and get a new one". screw that, get a better router. that hitachi or porter cable set has my eye on it. ******* POS TOOLS.

if you were wondering, yes the cone is offset. this is because i was reading LDC and there was a section on driver placement and apparently richard small says to mount all drivers unequidistant from any baffle edge. i was like, hmm doesn't seem like it'd matter on a subwoofer that has only like 2 inches on either side, but i'll see. i asked over at diyaudio.com and they said i might as well even if there isn't much difference :)

oh, and don't worry bout the port, i should have painted it AFTER priming cause now i have to go back over it now to get rid of the primer dust :)

unfortunately, all good things must come to an end :(. she is finished and is ready to be tested tomorrow morning :up2somet:. here's my take on the project. it is a VERY versatile subwoofer as it is (according to its EBP) geared for sealed enclosures, but it fits in this alignment nicely. this box is ~ 5 cubes or so tuned to 24 hz. now onto the finish. rustoleum makes a DARN good product. unfortunately, my mother decided it would be a good idea to leave her slippers in the middle of the floor so when me and my father were trying to carry it through the kitchen towards the stairs, he didn't see them and we nearly dropped the box flat out. luckily, he caught it and slowed it down by gripping the sides, which is where the paint damage is from. not to worry, i have fixed MUCH worse paint defects than these, so i'm not worried. this is a beast, and i can't wait for it.

alrighty peeps i woke up early to hear this behemoth. i think that it will suffice to say that i am getting lows i NEVER imagined. of course i'm losing output, but this box is IDEAL in the 30 hz region while my otehr excelled at mid 40s and up. let me just say, this moves AIR. i put on tech9ne - the beast and at first i could see it moving ALOT more than before, but it was deeper, more heart pounding. i thought i had screwd it up untnil my mother comes up the stairs BANGING on my door, and takes me down stairs to see **** rattling on the mantle. needless to say, this box gets LOW. i put on david banner - play and all hell broke loose. i won't spoil it any more, i'll make a video today.

looks great. how is it for movies? i've heard that the dayton's are more musically inclined, i'm looking for a kit geared for theater. i'd like to hear your input if you've played any dvd's with that thing.

nah, i don't have a tv in my room cause i'd never watch it. it WOULD be ****** to have 5.1 in my room, but i don't think my parents would go for that :)
