View Full Version : My first glassing worklog. Sub enclosure

OK ya maybe I should have went with something smaller for the first time, but I don't need kicks.

Lesson learned #1:

I hate working with glass! I give you guys mad props for working with this consistently and constantly. It's tedious, intoxicating(even when ventilated), and frustrating at times.

Lesson learned #2:

Any glass that touch the skin get off quick. This **** burns :P

Lesson learned # 3:

Use release. Even the painters tape trick din't work for me on such a large piece. This mold din't want to come out for anyone.

Lesson learned #4:

Read the instructions COMPLETELY before just diving in and making your first batch of resin. Instead of wasting 12 oz of resin becaue your ******* didnt realize this **** sets up in 15 minutes. Little at a time idiot! DOH!

Lessoned learned #5:

I hate working with glass!

With all that out of the way. I made the mold and huffed and puffed for an hour and a half releasing the mold. I didn't get pics of the mold out of the car because A. I was done for the weekend on this project. B. It's kind of ugly but it gives me my shape to work with.

For the mostpart the glass portion of this box won't be visible, so I am not spending time learning how to smooth it out. I only needed to use the glass to pocket this ***** in the corner of the trunk and conserve as much space as possible. MDF will be used for the front baffle and I will only need to worry about making the glass on top of the enclosure a bit presentable, but the finish I plan to use doesn't require baby butt smoothness.

Without further delay here are some progress pictures.

04 GTO. There is no trunk room because they caged the fueal tank in there to pass crash regulations. At this point I don't even know if I want to get better :P

The more I think about I guess I will have to to tie in the Front baffle. I am using more that just a ring for the front though as I hope to port it.

I will have more pics up when I go to start building up the mold on saturday.

I'ts ging to be 3/4 MDF. I will have to fleece and FG it to the mold. It isn't as big as you may think from the pics. That trunk is small and that makes the enclosure look huge.

You might want to put a flat piece of mdf in the bottom there to mount the ring or what ever to to make fleecing easier. It's alot easier attaching it to a piece of mdf securely than to glass itself. It tends to get wobbly with hot glue, and using screws is a pain when you have to reinforce the glass for the screws. :)

Update:

Yes I am working slow. I have a lot of **** going on and probably shouldn't even be attempting this anyway. Yes I realize my first attempt also looks like **** compared to some I have seen, but I am trying. Today I finally braced up the front baffle. By rough guestimations it is looking like I will be left with about 2.5 of a little less gross internal volume. After it is fully built I will get an exact size and then determine what I will tune it to. I am resorting to a 4" aeroport with it. I bought the fleece but lost the motivation to tack it in place :P

When are you going to fleece the rest of it?

Yes I will be fleecing the front baffle to my mold and doing the tedious task of glass, sand, glass, sand, etc, etc. I don't have to get it baby bottom smoth though because the finish I am putting on it is textured, instead of a gloosy paint. I will probably at least stretch the fleece over today and maybe through some resin on it.

Pulled the fleece over. That was enough for the night, so I may consider putting some resin on it today. Overall I am pleased with what the shape will end up being in the trunk.

Second picture, see if you can smooth out that big wrinkle before putting resin down. I'm sure it's easier said than done, of course, but should help out with strength of the enclosure and you won't have to fill it later. Great work, though!

getting there brther man. Did you round over the edges of your baffle ? It doesn't look like it. It will give you a much smoother edge, and more surface area for the resin to hold too. And try your d@mndest to get any wrinkles out before you apply the resin. It will save you sooooo much time sanding :)

IamDeMan
11-16-2005, 10:19 AM
Well, I missed the recomendation of rounding the edges with a router, so that didn't happen DOH. I tried for hours to pull all the wrinkles out. I only really have that one in the second pic that I am worried about. The one toward the back of the enclosure is no big deal as that side won't bee seen, so I only need to make sure it is structurally good there and not worry about the cosmetics of it too much. I may try pulling a little more of the wrinkle out in the second pic, but I tried pulling every which way yesterday and couldn't get it. It just put a wrinkle somewhere else. My mold has a lot of curves to it. I may just have to be prepared to fill and sand that area numerous times.

Thanks for the comments.

I have one thing to add, but no new pics.

FLEECE SOAKS A SHITLOAD OF RESIN UP!

Seriously I must have used at least 1/3 of a gallon soaking the fleece all the way through. I don't know if the fleece I used was too thick but it held a shitload before finally penetrating to the inside.

I still have much fill / sanding to do, but I figure I will at least show off where I am at right now. It is definitely getting there and my efforts are finally starting to have a return. I am happy with it's fit and the overall shape and look that it is taking on. I need to go pick up more body filler because I didn't realise how much I would need and should have went with a big can lol.

OK, so 4th month into it and I have had a chance to progress and add some kind of update here. I am done playing with any fillers now. I added the port and pounded out a shape I can live with. The sanding is good enough for the hammered nickel finish I will be giving it. I will start the painting tomorrow. Here is what the final look is before painting though. It has a final net volume of 2 CUFT and tuned around 32hz. Styro pellets to get the volume.

Finding time the past 4 months has been hard. 50-60 hours at work each week. Buying a house and relatives visiting will do that. It won't be long now before I can start making an amp rack for the trunk.

Got it painted. I changed my mind on Hammered Nickel when i went to go get paint. I decided on Hammered black metal instead. Well now I think it looks better on the cap lol. So I may sand this down and do something else eventually. For now though it will stay this color and I will put it in the car so I can listen to it for a while.

It's rustoleum rattle can finish. It's hammer textured finish. It is supposed to simulate hammered metal.

:)That cat is a scrawny *****, but my other cat "Speedbump" is a huge stocky cat that we rescued from the outdoors. He would be a better challenge ;) The sub has a flat bottom to it, but the amp rack will be butting up to the side holding it as well. Plus the little identation in the box snugly fits around the trunklid arm. It won't be going anywhere I assure you

nice box im glad that you finished your work log that you started like 4 months ago
Ya 4 months is a bit ridiculous, but I had so much going on. I really shouldn't have started it at all.

BTW here is the Brahma installed into the box now. I ran it in the house in series off my Dayton 1000 watt plate amp. It sounds good. I would prefer a little lower extension, but it is a car sub not home, so cabin gain will hopefully be kind to me. It does make presence at 20hz, but really gets wicked at 30 and up. It sounds good on a variety of music. Megadeth was downright brutal :) Tomorrow I mock up a temporary amp rack and put it in the car.

http://s92438186.onlinehome.us/albums/album04/fgsub_012.jpg

I temporarily mounted my 1100d5 in the spare tire well and gave this a whirl. all I can say is HOLY ****. This is absolutley the loudest setup I have ever had. I did gain more extension by way of cabin gain when comparing how it sounded in the home. It still becomes very alive 30 and up of course. I think the sub still retained good SQ characteristics. Many types of music sounded great to me with it. I am very happy with how it turned out. Now I need to build up the rest of the trunk and finalize the install.
