well, building this box today for Mike516882 a user of the forums for his jeep with a fiberglass hardtop.

it'll be 35hz.. 33x18x14 inches outside.. yes, i know it's a bit small, but thats all the space he's got, and i think i can make it sound good, i have a XXX and a 1500 watt no-name amp.. pushing maybe 800 watts to test this enclosure, should be a fun couple of days.

it gives a 2.7^3 inside... not too bad for a 15 sx

he's going to run 1 JL audio 500x1 on each voicecoil, should be pretty loud
next post will have pics after i cut all the pieces to size, i just have one sheet right now : )

got all the wood cut, here's how it looks.. this is for the main enclosure, i'm going to dry fit it first with screws <with predrilling holes, what a pain> and create the slot'd ports that way... then desemble, and resemble once with the port material in place, then desemble, and final assemble with glue + caulk... lots of work, but usually makes a really clean box. for the end product.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/mikescanlon11/Picture108.jpg

thats the extra just in case.... i hope i dont need it alot of wood for a backporch workshop.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/mikescanlon11/Picture110.jpg

should finish the first step of the build today. and be gluing sometime tommarow, but look for a finished un-sealed product tonight.. i hope... unless nieghbors complain about the noise, **** em though, this is art.

edit: if someone could tell me how to make those **** pictures work, that'd be great.

thanks

If thats the port then Id say that its WAY too small.

mikescanlon
09-29-2005, 07:06 PM
the guy wanted a sqaure port.. two of them actually

the port calculated out to 5 inches round 14 inches long.. as a round port for 35hz.

5 x 3.14 = 15.7^3

therefore 3"x5.25" =15.75^3 to make it a square port

and i kept it 14 inches long.. mathematically it's the same port.. except the mdf takes up more space than the pipe would have.. but i took that out of the volume of the box

and it's getting two ports for this box, one on either side.

correct me if i'm wrong moe, seriously, i want to fix it now if i can.

also have new pictures..

i'm doing one port at a time.. the other side will be cut in the same place after i finish the entire first port.

edit: this link shows where the other port is.. pretty much mirrored inside the box.
http://photobucket.com/albums/a141/mikescanlon11/?action=view&current=Picture114.jpg

and to get perfect holes.. or **** near you need a roto-zip by bosch or a router with a stick bit.. or something similar... a jigsaw can do it if you're real good with one.

mikescanlon
09-29-2005, 07:48 PM
router + practice = good holes

you gotta know how to work your tool real good before you can tear up what you're drilling with the most accuracy.

just make sure you aim, use plenty of lube (oil) and you'll end up with a good outcome

mikescanlon
09-29-2005, 07:51 PM
 carpet thats where the fun begins  shouldn't be too bad, the ones i've carpeted in the past came out alright to good.

i just hate doing it, carpet suxxors.

naked boxes are beautiful.

you can come see this beautiful naked box in person if you want.

i wanna check out your buick on 20's anyway.

i'll post up a 2x12 box i made and carpeted for under the seat of a 1997 ford pickup. which turned out pretty good for this mexican guy from my old job, it's a little dirty, but that has nothing to do with my carpeting job.

2 4" aeroports from partsexpress would be much better since you are restricted on airspace.

If I were building a slot port for an SX 15 id give it no less than 45 sq in of port.

You may get some unwanted noise with that port @ high voulume.

i'm going to test it before it ships, i'm having fun making them like that all crazy.. if i get noise when i test, i'll tear it down and buy those there.

Not a fan of your port design.
Looks like your making it way more complicated than it needs to be and small.

Not bashing, just constructive critisimn.

mikescanlon
09-30-2005, 12:01 PM
i'm confident it will sound good.
i wanted this box to be a challenge, at least a little bit, so the complication is good

it's .5 cubes under recomendation, but it should still be good, he had max exterior dimensions to adhere to, and wanted two square ports, this is the creation that came from those parameters.

plus, you never get ahead doing the same thing everyone else does.

like i said before, i test all the boxes i make before i ship them, so if this thing sounds like butt, i'll start over and make a single slot port thats been done well a thousand times before.

i'm here in ft lauderdale, tested the box with a JL 1000.1 and a MMATS 15'' JUGGERNAUT!!!
in a honda civic with a 200 amp alt, 2 yellow tops and my box you've seen me constructing.

very brutal woofer box, i'd notch this up as a success, i cant wait until i finish it.

was supposed to be tuned at 35hz.. box seems to hit hardest at 36hz, but still gives plenty of justice to the low end.

50 cent's - just a lil bit and candy shop sound **** good so lows are plenty there.

should be pretty decent spl, we didn't have a meter on hand, so the end user will have to meter this thing with his 15 SX,

which i'm sure will kill small animals, make his ***** bigger, the girls will love him and mike and the sx will live happily ever after.

pics up tommarow, gonna stay down in ft lauderdale until tommarow morning, driving *****.

clown, horrible way to start off, you won't last long.

anyway, i like the box, but the lines need to be cleaned up. they are screaming: "ORBITAL SANDER!!! SAVE US!!!"

otherwise, invest in a router cause the circle isn't ideal. the other reason why is because if the circle isn't cut on an axis (jasper jig, circle jigs etc) you don't know whether or not the driver will fit into the hole. chances are good that it will, but you never know unless you have it. also, i don't like the port configuration, it would have been just as good if not better (less chance for turbulence from those ridiculous edges) with just a regular slot or circular port. but not bad overall and this is just my opinion :)

mikescanlon
10-06-2005, 04:40 PM
it tested well, no port noise, i was kind of worried about it, the woofer will fit, i measured it all around it's .034 inches over the woofer size, so it'll be snug like it should the pictures dont show how nice the circles are.. on one port it's a bit jagged, but i've block sanded it since then. i have a roto-zip.. i dont think i need a router the roto-zip is a beast, i bought a jasper jig but it doesn't work properly, i'm going to make one when i get some time for each size woofer.

PV Audio
10-06-2005, 07:12 PM
how nice the circle is? the circle isn't that nice....you'll be amazed when u get a router

mikescanlon
10-06-2005, 08:09 PM
are you familiar with a rotozip?

i've worked in a wood shop with every piece of equipment you can imagine, planers, jointers, full size 12 inch table saws, band saws, everything

i've used a router.. i love the rotozip over the router, the router isn't as precise at getting roundness, i just need to make a jasper jig, i did that circle freehand with 4 marks to show where it should be, i'll post up my 6th order bandpass box when i begin construction on that for a xxx woofer 15/12 whatever i can get my hands on, you'll see : )
