Hmmmm. Particle Board. I hate that ****. Do you like using that better than mdf? Its 1/2" Aspen. Two parts of the port needed to be that width.

edit: errrr its PB..:crap:

me and my ******* not predrilling just cracked my face/front baffle :furious:  most of you have Jig or router to cut the cutouts..I spent about 5 hrs using a dremell which went up in flames last night..(cool I might add) but that just makes this worse

Yes sir I did. Well turns out that crack in the baffle made it like 1/16" wider so its a tighter fit and is working fine. Can't wait for everything to dry to put in the other two subs and carpet it. Will get pics ASAP.(moms on vacation with the dig camera)

whoever told you that was MDF was wrong, that IS particle board.

i use particle board when people want to have the cheapest enclosure possible ~30 bucks.

it's not bad stuff, might want to give it a coat of resin.

nice looking project so far, want to see it finished, crazy patience with that dremel, get yourself a router or a roto-zip or at least a jig-saw from a pawnshop for 10 bucks.

pawn shops have a decent tool selection since tools are soo easy to steal.

Yes that was my mistake and in a hurry at Lowe's. :crying: O well...got more resin left if it decides to break (the port like you said). Headaches are fun...not...lol

mdf at my lowes is only 20 bucks

particle board is 11 bucks a sheet.

sometimes headaches > 9 dollars

i know resin > 9 dollars

Tis true. It's working fine so far. Got 45mins til resin is dry so will comment tomorrow on it all works out.
Besides, 9bucks = 3.321gal of gas for me

mikescanlon
09-29-2005, 07:04 AM
45 mimnutes for resin to dry.. are you in alaska? it takes about 5-10 minutes here in florida from mix to rock solid.. and when i finsih a gallon i still have more hardener left over.. gotta love 95 degree weather + 650 degree hot air blower. particle board is harder to work with/has more blow outs, and is a pain in the *** to drill, compared to mdf.. next time when you have mdf you'll wonder why they even make particle board.

No It takes 2 hrs...It had been 1 hr and 15 mins so 45 mins left when I posted that.

Well got the enclosure in and it is literally stuck in my trunk. Has no room to move. Scratched my trunk area :furious: :pissed:

Will get pics asap. Only listened for like 2 mins but sounds good so far. I can tell my car feels the extra weight. :crying: Oh well..

lol x2.

Get a jigsaw
Rotozips are the best thing i ever used... I made some custom mounts for my 240sx to fit 6.5" alpines instead of factory 4x6"s... i used a jigsaw on the first pair and they didnt come out quite right, but the second i used a rotozip and it makes life a whole lot better.

negativezeroz

Ok well I figured out how it's "stuck." The box is too deep. So when I get carpet I will have a major sanding job to do on back side to make it fit or make a FG enclosure. The box isnt even sitting on the floor of my trunk. It's about 1/2" above the floor cuz its too deep so its suspended. :furious: :pissed:

i mistakenly used particle board on my first box too hehe. it held up fine, and i never had a problem with it, but it was used in a relatively low power application. my current box is mdf :o)

from the jl audio website:

------------------------
Avoid using particle board at all costs as it is too flaky (literally), doesn't hold screws well and swells like a sponge when water hits it. In short, particle board comes from the Pit of Hell. Avoid it at all costs.

A TRUE STORY

We once heard of a fellow using a triplet of our 10W6's in a sealed box powered with a 1200 watt amplifier. The box was not braced at all, was one big chamber and was made of particle board. While demonstrating the system for a crowd of people, the box literally exploded in his trunk, coating his trunk with sawdust and enclosure shrapnel, leaving the subs to play in free-air (not cool). Not only is it frustrating (or really cool, depending upon your personality) to have a box explode in your car, but it can also be very dangerous....after all, you could poke an eye out!

Coated mine with resin inside so it will hold. Eventually will make FG enclosure.

negativezeroz

Sounds good yes. I just wish it actually fit with some room left over rather than scratching my trunk and floating above the floor. Oh well I can always make a FG later.
