I'm getting a little bit of port noise (sounds kind of like there's a piece of paper taped on the inside of the port), I have 41.25 inches of port area and it's 21.75 inches long. I was wondering, if i sand down the corner where the port takes the turn and i sand down the end of the port more so that it is flared even more can that reduce port noise somewhat?

Can't crack it open, but i may be able to reach the first corner in, cant get the end of the port though :crap: . Ohh well, it shouldnt be that much of a problem, I can only hear it when i listen to it with my trunk open, otherwise it's just fine.

flaring it more should help you out, go for it.

Alright man, thanks. And for future reference (think i may build a new box if i can't get rid of this noise, maybe a lil smaller too so i dont have to pull out the backseat and support bar to get the box in and out) how much port area should I have for a 15 SX?

id give 45 minimum with everything flared, but 60+ if possible while still flaring and rounding everything.

Wow, that's quite a bit, may even defeat the purpose of building a smaller box :uhoh: , alright man, thanks for the help.

How about 50.75? 60 sq inches of port area that calls for 40 inches port length :uhoh: , even with 50.75 that's still 32 inches :crap: . Btw, 32 hz tuning.

Edit: could I do two 4x14.5x20 inch ports?

no, an increase in the port area is gonna make your required port length go way up. (i.e. 60 sq in vs 50.75 lol) 50.75 sq in 32 long sounds good, flare the ends and round the bend.

****, been makin plans for this box and this just isnt going to work out...what i wanted to do on my box is make it about 2 inches shorter, and a few inches less deep, but with this extra port area (even if i do the same port area as b4) the box is just going to have to be bigger to accommodate for the extra internal volume i have to add (I want to do this for one, because the tortion bars of my trunk are bending over the box right now, and because I will be able to get it in and out of my trunk w/o having to remove the backseats and seat support bar). Now i'm thinking I should go with 4 4" round ports, that would be 50.25" of port area. Now in winisd it says for 4 4" round ports the port length would have to be 38.16", does that mean 9.54" a port or 38.16" a port?

all 4 would have to be 38.16.

Ouch, not good, not good. I guess i'm going to have to have port noise :crap: . Does port noise even affect anything other than listening to it with the trunk open anyways?

Have you tried using WinISD? It will tell you the velocity the air is moving at in accordance to box size, tuning, size of your port, and the number of ports. Although it isnt perfect, you should be able to get a good estimate of what kind of box and ports will give off the least amount of noise.

Ya, thats what i've been usin, but to get the port size and length of port and internal size i would need it would end up being way too big to get into my trunk. That's why i'm going to have to have 42in^2 of port with port noise :( . But anyways, will that end up messing up my tuning? Or should it be just fine as long as the trunk is sealed off to the rest of the car?

I see you have a 15" SX, I'm building the box for mine. I'm glad now that I made the port area more than 60 sq in :D.

That's what i thought, but that thing will prolly take up about 7 cubes with ~60in^2 of port area, unless you're going to be tuning it high. And remember, you have to get it into the trunk also  . What kind of car you got?

And again, anyone, is port noise going to affect anything as long as my trunk is sealed off from the cabin and i don't have to hear the port noise?

Port noise is port noise, if you can hear it than it matters I guess.

I tuned mine to 32 hz and 33 inches of port length, which makes for 6.9 cuft. I'm sure it'll fit in my 81 Buick Riviera.

Well that's why i was asking, just because there's port noise doesnt mean it's going to be in the cabin...that's why i was asking if it was going to affect anything else, like tuning.
