View Full Version : Why does my Ipod sound like garbage on my brand new Eclipse HU?

Just had the HU installed, and everything is fine, but when I use my Ipod on the Aux in, it sounds like ****, it sounds extremely staticky and not good at all. CD and radio sounds fine though. I had the Ipod running through RCA's w/ my old Alpine HU and it sounded fine, now its running through a Mini Jack wire into the Mini Jack input and it sounds like crap. Could it be a bad wire, or a HU issue? Thanks!! Always has to be something with whenever i get **** put in. :emb:

I did, a local ship did it. They couldn't figure out why it was statiky, everything is plugged in correctly. They said its either the HU or the wire. :eyebrow:

Well, there is obviously a problem, either w/ the wire or HU itself. I plugged in a discman to it to, and it sounds the same, so its not the ipod. Its not that the sound quality is just not great, there is so much distortion and static it drowns out everything.

BTW its an Eclipse 5444

a new wire can't be that expensive, can it? just swap that out

Not at all, i just couldn't do it tonite becuase its late and nothing is open. Ill switch it tommorow and update you guys. Hopefully the wire is just shot and a new one will fix everything, this HU is freakin awesome and i hope i don't have to send it back because of a shotty aux in.

well dont know about the static, but regarding distortions my piece of advize is quite simple: remove every single and any equalization, bass boost or whatever Ipod has, let it run totally flat... make all the sound adjustments directly on the HU...

about the static im thinking its a bad ground or a bad hu...

Ipod only has 1 eq, and i have it disabled. And about the grounding, everything but the Aux in sounds fine, so i don't think its grounding. It distorts heavily at low volume too.

 It sounded FINE on my Alpine HU w/ a different wire. It doesn't sound just off, there is more static/distortion than actual music.

Probably something wrong with the new wire/input...

If you really wanted good SQ you would get that adapter than allows you to use the iPods Line out, heard much better results with use of her...

Some mp3 players distort when reproducing music at full volume.

For instance the Archos V2 Recorder that i own...

I can only put it at 91/100 volume and it distorts above that, sounds 100% fine below 91/100.

Try touching it down a bit, see if there's a difference

Please note that this exact same ipod sounded fine on my Alpine HU at full volume, although it had a different wire. Also, i changed the source (used a discman) and still had the same results.

I just want it to sound normal man, right now im not experiencing bad SQ, im experiencing a malfunction of some sort, im just hoping its the wire and not the brand new HU :crying:

Gotta be the connecting then... get a new wire, if it is still ****ed get a new deck.

Well at 91/100 the head unit reproduces sound from the AUX in at the same level as a CD.

if I were to put the mp3 player at like 70/100 then i would have to crank it to get the mp3 player to a comfortable listening level, then when i go back to CD it's loud as hell

Guys, i already know its either the wire or the HU itself with the problem, no need to expalin how it might be the source becuase its not. I still haev like 12 hours before the stores open though, which is why i am curious

well test the wires on the amplifier input if they can be turned to RCA stereo... PLEASE turn off the hu before messing with RCA cables on the amplifier and put the ipod volume to 0 and slowly increase it see if it still distorts... if yes then i bet its the cable lol

My HU doesn't have an RCA input, its a Mini Jack Input. And like I said before the only possible things that could be wrong by logic are the HU or the mini jack wire.

yes it is. It has a CD changer port, and then it has a Mini Jack Input.

there may be an adapter availabe to convert the cd changer into an aux input as alpine head units are?

and by mini jack are you talking about the standard headphone jack or the really small one (like for cellphone headsets)?

Standard Headphone Jack. I still have my Alpine CD port to RCA adapter, would that work on the Eclipse?

ls1pimp

And one more thing, how do i even remove the headunit? Its locked in pretty good, and i don't have any key or anything that came with the box, with my Alpine where pins i would just move out, but i can't find anything on this.

Probably not, but you can try it.

Go to RadioShack and get a male to male standard stereo headphone wire. This means both sides will have a stereo plug - one goes onto the head unit, the other to your ipod.

If those are the only 2 things it could be, by logic, why did you post here asking why your ipod sounds bad? You seemed to have known the answer :p:

Becuase at first i wasn't sure if it was the ipod, but like 2 posts later i stated that i tried a discman and had the same results, so that hereby rules out the ipod.

I got a new 5 dollar wire from radioshack, and it works fine now, guess it was the wire. :)

Upon further inspection, i noticed that regardless of wire, the ipod will distort if you turn the volume up too high on the ipod itself, so there was actually nothing at all wrong wtih the original wire. :furious:

it is the same effect of turning your head unit up to high.

CLIPPING!!!!!!!!!!!

if you dont get the concept, let someone install your stuff, then let that someone show you how to work your stuff.

Also, my sub sounds alot weaker and its not hitting as hard is it was before now for some reason, I have non-fader all the way up, and i set the EQ to +3 on 63hz,80z and 100hz, but its not hitting nearly as hard is it was before. Do i have to up the amp gain or something?

is your car insured? if so set fire to it and start over. just set the gain on the amp according to the tutorial.
