Hey I see people saying that the lower your tuning is the better the SQ but you lose output. I don't understand why that is... How does a lower tuning give you better SQ? This may be a dumb question but hey I'm a noob. :)

Playing with WinISD or looking at frequency response graphs will make it a lot easier to understand...as tuning frequency drops, the box becomes less "peaky". This lowers overall output but gives it a flatter response.

Ahhh IC. I just messed around in Winisd a lil, I see what ya mean. I think I'm gonna lower the tuning for my XXX to 27 hz instead of 35. I'm starting to realize I'm more of an SQ guy than I am SPL.

27 IMO is way to low for a car.

Do 30. You should be fine with that. Most songs do not even approach that mark, however.

Yeah, 30 should be good, i have my treo ssi 15 at 30 Hz and its the lowest tuning i would ever need. I would recomend more like 32 Hz, but its ur call...

Also do not forget the size of the ported box, a tiny ported box tuned low will not be the same as a large box tuned low. Just like a small sealed sounds different from a large sealed.

It should be noted that you should design around the sub and listening preferences rather than just tuning to 30 Hz and calling it a day as many people do ...

And to add to what JMAC said the type of car/truck and which way the box is facing need to be taken into consideration as well. My car has a large cabin gain on the low end, then I can move that same box into my wife's car and run it off my amp in my car and it sounds very different the low end goes away and the upper bass is louder.
