Downfiring..how much space?

Im building a couple of boxes for my friend...and he wants the downfiring. How much space should there be between the floor and the sub?

What are the speakers? Their xmax will have an effect on this.

if my memory serves me right i think the sag has to be less than 5% of the xmas or else
you can't downfire it... i donno some one correct me on this
