Hey guys! What's going on?

I listen to almost exclusively rap, especially bass heavy stuff like Three 6 Mafia, Project Pat, Pastor Troy, etc...

What type of tuning do you guys recommend for my new ported box?

It is a daily driver, not competition or anything...

If it matters, it is for a 2005 12" Kicker CompVR

i listen to the same, I usually go at around 30hz to 35hz. You can be retardedly loud with " Get that money right pt II ". But i would go 30 to 35 hz.

Im thinking maybe like 32 hz...

how does that sound?

Will it be a big difference between that and say 35 hz?

I saw do not go that low.
40 hz or 38hz is awesome for rap. I switched from a 40 to a 35hz box and it was soo bad. Most rap songs dont go below like 35 anyway.

So on my new box, should I port to 35 just to be safe. I listen to rap only also...

No
If you only listen to rap, tune about 35.
37-40

Anyone else agree?

Or does the majority still think 30-35hz is best?

I was in the process of tuning my box to 30 hertz but now that I read the stuff in this thread I'm probably going to change to high 30's or probably just wait for more responses

My sealed box is tuned to like 37hz and it sounds great on the few rap songs I've played.

I dunno man, but nothing pisses me off more when the midbass part of a rap beat gets lost. Accuracy, broad range of reproduction ability>SPL here.

OT but fairly relevant... 35 sound good to me.

I like 30Hz, midbass should be played by your midbass speakers anyway. Subwoofers play sub-bass

midbass...in rap?
rap is only sub bass and highs

Agreed. Tune closer to 30 hz, don't worry about your mid bass. Get some nice comps for that.

I listen to mainly rap.
I had it at 40 for a while, and then went to 35 and it was awful at 35 imo.

well i'm going to build my box saturday :) //// it will be ported to 27hz for s.q and 4cuft so can make sure i get the low lows you know!! The last ported box i had was 4.5 and ported to 35 and 40 hz it was loud with my rap ''ganster209rap'' but the sq was not there with all my music but thats what you get with a port that high :( p.s rap does go down to 28hz at last my rap does

I listen to mostly rap and heavy bass songs. I tuned my box to 32 hz. This will retain some sq but still get loud. It will also still sound ok with other styles of music. I am pleased with my install.

I listen to rap as well, does it matter on your system also? the guy that built my box sounds like ****, i dont know what its tuned at tho but it ***** ***? and right now im in the process of getting a new box.

if it matters on the system you have and music you like (rap) what do you think would be the perfect tune?

also what should i tell the the box builder to get the perfect box i want?

sorry dont mean to jack your thread

Jmac did some testing on popular rap songs, and found that few songs get into the lower 30s, much less the 20s. Play the song on your computer and watch what notes it hits.

I think the lowest in Late Nite Tip was like 33

But if I tune to 32 hz, isn't it going to peak near the upper 30s?

Anyone else?

Cmon guys! I really want to start building this box.

I need to figure out the tuning so I can attempt to design one myself...

Then post it online and get laughed at for how wrong it is

noob question, how do you tune a box? i mean how do you know if its 32-35 hertz?

I personally would say 35 is your best bet. The reality is that a tune change from 5hz or so isn't noticeable at all to a human ear. The only thing that notices these small tune changes is a mic in a SPL competition.

You could tune to 40+ but that might kill the low end. You could tune below 30 but you'll most likely run into problems with the enclosure being too large for the sub or your car. You also run the risk of killing your transition to midbass frequencies which can make everything sound like crap.

On top of this, the reality is your box will NOT tune to what ever you build it for. There is going to be some error in the build and the final volumes wont exactly equal what you were aiming for. For instance my box is about .01cu.ft. off from where I was trying to build, but that's hardly going to ruin performance.

noob question, how do you tune a box? i mean how do you know if its 32-35 hertz?

In a ported box the port length/cross-sectional area combined with the volume of the box determine the tune. There are calculators and stuff on the net to figure this out.

My sealed box is tuned to like 37hz and it sounds great on the few rap songs I've played.

Am i missing somthing? Or have i just been gone too long and now there is a way to tune sealed boxes like they are ported or somthing.

Beat_Dominator
06-04-2005, 01:10 AM
All boxes have a tune. In a sealed box it is the F3 that varies with different volumes.

For my box it is about 42hz in a .4cuft. enclosure and 37 in a .75cuft. enclosure.

gunny86
06-05-2005, 12:38 AM
then technically it isnt the box that is tuned, the driver is the determining factor. i was just under the impression that you made a typo in saying you "tuned your sealed box". my mistake

Beat_Dominator

Yeah, that's just what it comes out to on my setup.

ya tune to 32hz if thats what u want...personally i got some plans made and im gonna tune mine to 35 hz. 3.6 cu ft....the 3-5hz difference between 32 and say 35 or 37 isn't gonna make a huge audible difference especially if u play your system at high volumes...so just pick a tuning frequency and go with it...and if u don't like it then deal with it for a little bit and build another one...

I would suggest you tune it to around 38 or 40 HZ if you listen to souly rap I would tune right in that range.

Harrison486
06-05-2005, 09:53 AM
I have decided to go with 34 hz....
