View Full Version : Am I making the right choice by going ported?

I have a 12" Alpine Type R (SWR-1242D), the 2005 model. I'll be giving it 350W RMS. The recommended enclosures by Alpine are
sealed: .85cu/ft
ported: 1.7cu/ft port: Diameter=3", L=9.9" (according to a calculator that is 30.4Hz)

I listen to mostly rock and some rap. I already bought the port and I'll be making my own box. But I was just wondering if I'm making the right choice, and am I going to lose a lot of sound quality by it.

You should be fine, I do not know how those speakers perform ported but I assume they do alright. Go with the ported and if you do not like it build a sealed box, they can be built in 2 or 3 hours. I usually build two boxes anyways but I have no real life.

well I have around the same ammount of power, wit the same sub. I recommend 3 cubes tuned to around 30-35hz. With your power you will need a bigger box so 3 cuft would be good. But mine is in 3 cubes tuned to 33hz and it wangs

Also ported is much better for that driver. I had it in a sealed when I first got. It was so quiet and didnt sound as good as it does now.

I planned out a box a week back. And it came out to 1.74cu/ft. w=22.5 h=14 l=13 With the port being 3" diameter and 9.5" in length, it's also flared on both ends. I was trying to be close to the recommended box.

You could try a slot port and give u self around 25-30 sq inches of port. You might (very good possibility) of getting port noise from that small of a port. Also that recommended box size is if your giving the sub its full 500 watts. If your only giving it 350 watts i dont think you will come near the xmax. If you make a bigger box You get more xmax / need less power.

So the bigger the box the less power needed to get same sound?
