I have a sony cdx-mp40. The unit has rca line in jacks on the back. I purchased a rca to headphone jack adaptor to hook my mp3 player to the sony deck. The problem is when I hit the source button it only selects between radio or cd. Is there some thing I can do to make the deck select the line in? do I need an adaptor.

are you sure that they are aux in? Perhaps you're trying to use an RCA preout as an aux in... that won't work.

it could be a setting under menu because on my Sony CDX-F7715X it lets me turn it off as a source check that but if it says AUDIO BUS IN onthe back it should work becasue thats wat my Sony CDX-F7715X says and it works great iPods are so cool lol.
