Does an amp actually put out the rms it says it does? example: 500 rms X 1 at 4 ohms

Actually an amp that says it puts out 500w rms will actually do more.

Use this formula:

Ap: Actual Power
rms: rms value
La: length of amp
P: purchase price

Ap = {(10^7 x P) / [(5.42 x rms) / (721.98 / La)] / (rms x 100)} x 4

so let's say:

rms: 500w
La: 12
P: $299

{(10^7 x 299) / [(5.42 x 500) / (721.98 / 12)] / (500 x 100)} /x 4
[(2990000000 / 39.225) / 50000] x 4
(7622689.611 / 50000) x 4
152.45 x 4
609.8w rms

assuming you are getting a steady 14.4v (or whatever) rated voltage is, it should - if you are running another amp and your total current draw surpases the ability of the alternator then no- lenght and size of wire play a big part also- in other words in a 'perfect world' yes it should, but very few live in that world-

It also sometimes works for dark gray and gold colored amps... but that's only if they have no logos on them.

IIRC you divide the price by the value of the letters
Ex. A=1 B=2 C=3 ect.
