What do you think about ORION AMPS?

I've used orion amps most of the time and i have to admit that the orion amps has given me the best performance out of my subs. I used to have the orion hcca series and now i have the orion 2500D 2004 series. Boths series of amps has given me the power more than expected.... I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT ORION AMPS!

I have an Orion amp and I like it, but from now on they're going to be a regular amp because they were just bought out by Directed. Which means production will move overseas for cheaper less effective labor and materials. So appreciate that Orion.

Re: What do you think about ORION AMPS?

check out xtant, mcintosh or zapco amps. They're three of the few that haven't crossed over. Very high quality amps, Better than Orion, but you will pay big bucks. I don't believe so, it happened late last year. Don't get me wrong i still believe Orion will put out quality amps just mot high end, more like Kicker, MTX... still a good solid amp

Re: What do you think about ORION AMPS?

Directed bought Orion 2-3 years ago. The amps haven't been made in the US in that time.

pkilla- I hate to break it to you but xtant is owned by Mitek, parent company of MTX and Streetwires. I'm pretty sure that they are made overseas now, too. There's nothing wrong with overseas built amps. Audison are some of the most bulletproof amps on the planet and they certainly are not made in the US.

On the topic at hand, I own 5 Orion amps right now and I want a few more. Mine are all HCCAs but I haven't heard any complaints about the newer, post buy-out, amps. Heard nothing but praise for them infact. The important thing is that you like them. Your system should exist to please you, not the rest of us.

Re: What do you think about ORION AMPS?

Orions products from 97 and before were the best audio of that time but after 97 they went downhill like some other old skool audio. Also there amps are no where near as powerful as they used too be. Old skool hcca amps could drop down to 1/4 ohm no problem and still be stable now there lucky they can handle 1.

    Thanks,

Re: What do you think about ORION AMPS?

yeah, if you look at who really owns what and what is behind some of these companies, you'd find that very little is actually made in the US, FWIW...

The R series HCCAs and the Gen 4 and 5 HCCAs were still excellent amps made in the US by ADST. The XTR and GS and GT and SX series were some of the most solid amps ever built as well, but by your example they **** because they are/were not stable below 2 ohms. Pretty stupid way to judge the quality of an amp IMO. It wasn't until they were bought out by DEI in 2001 or 2 that the product really changed. The new amps aren't stable at really low impedances, but so what? They weren't designed to fill that niche anymore. That niche is all but dead because the majority of competition sanctioning bodies went away from having a really low power category, thus eliminating the market for the old school high current amp. The new amps make as much or more power than the old ones and cost less. They are still reliable from what I have heard.

Tru does have some amps that are more expensive than Brax. Tru's Class A amp is around $5,000, and all of the copper series are above $2K, which some extending up into the higher $3K digits.

But yes...I would still consider Orion to be superb amp manufacturer.

Actually since Robert Zef sold Zapco, although he still designs the amps, he has more input as far as materials/componentry in the fabrication of the Arc audio designs- the arc audio 4150 and 2500's amps are his only designs ever w 2000 damping factor (Zapco competition line are 1000 and we all know how much they cost) Nevertheless great company! Anything he's associated with is gold.
