My amp stopped working... which amp would you recommend for my Type R?
First off, I wish to thank this board and its' members. Thanks to the input, I've been able to build a very nice system for a very reasonable price.
Today I went to get everything installed and I got some very unexpected news. My mono amp that was supposed to power my Alpine Type R swr-1043D was blown! It wasn't good news, but it was on old amp and I've had for a while, so I figured that it's time had come.
So, I'm back for more advice...
Here are the specs on the sub
Alpine SWR-1043D Type-R 10" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils at Crutchfield.com
I've searched this forum for relevant threads, but didn't have much luck. I've also been looking for for quality amps that push 600+rms @ 4ohms, but the ones that I've found have been very pricey.
Any suggetions?
Thanks,
Joel

Re: My amp stopped working... which amp would you recommend for my Type R?
Why are you looking for 600 + at 4 ohms when you have a dual 4 ohm sub? You are gonna want to look for something that does the power you want at 2 ohms because that will be your best wiring option on that sub. What is your budget for an amp? Should be easier/cheaper to find the power you are looking for at 2 ohms or better yet get an amp that will do the power you want at 2 ohms but will also handle a 1 ohm load so you have room to grow down the road.

Re: My amp stopped working... which amp would you recommend for my Type R?
I wasn't aware that I could wire the sub to 2ohms. If that's the case, it's definitely going to make it easier to find an amp. If I get the sub wired at 2 ohms, is it going to have a higher RMS than it did at 4ohms?
As far as my budget, since a new amp wasn't in the plans, it's not all that great. $150 - $250. The closer to $150 the better.
Thanks

Soundstream TN1.1000D and PPI P1000.1 are both regularly available on sales for about $200 new. Each gives you about 1000watts at 2ohm (they use the same board but PPI was underrated). Great buy IMO. Just set the subwoofer gain level conservatively with a DMM.
