    Massive audio Nano Block amps...

A friend of mine was asking me about the Massive Nano Block amps, mainly the NX2 and N3.

I have no experience with Massive but have herd lots of good things about them.

    So....I ask you.....any thoughts??

Have you used it or herd one yet? And if you have, what was your impression?

My friends main concern is how the 2ch(NX2) will sound with his comps---is it "bright, flat" ect...

One concern people are having about NX amplifiers is that the full range channels appear to be overrated. I have seen a published review with a test showing 65watts of power at 4ohm and 100watts at 2ohm on NX4 channels, a far cry from the 100watt/200watt claim. Granted, not every comp set needs 100watts of power and 2-channel model may be different.

I would like to see someone else do a bench test on the NX4. While it is a magazine that posted those graphs, it's in Russian and so the test procedure might not be clearly explained. It's been a long time since I looked at it. If they tested the amplifier without a load connected it won't make the same power, which could explain the poor performance.

I was running an NX2 until I went active with a PPI P900.4. I took out not only passive crossovers, but I removed two sets of tweeters, so I really have no clue how different the two amplifiers sound. I did enjoy my NX2 quite a bit for roughly a year, and I've heard no complaints from the person I sold it to.

I use the N2 wired at 1 Ohm. The subwoofer level on my head unit stays at around 6-8 out of 15, and I don't listen to much music with synthetic bass, but I'm really pleased with that amplifier. I have it under the driver's seat and it gets cold air blown across it during the summer.

Re: Massive audio Nano Block amps...

I ran the NX5 for about 8 months, I'm glad I got rid of it. I had to run a bullet fan beside it just to keep it from going into protect. The A/B side got extremely hot. And I agree that I don't think it does rated for the A/B side. I had them running 2 sets of massive CK6's and at high volumes sounded muffled. I switched out to the Eclipse XA4000 I'm running now and they sound so much cleaner and louder at lower volumes. The Eclipse is rated at 125x4 compared to the NX5 at 120x4. The D side was decent though.

Current set up: 2010 Buick Enclave, 2 12" MMATS PROCASTS 2.5@35, MMATS D200HC
Hertz 165XL comps in front door, Alpine 1507 bridged
Pioneer Z150bt Nav, Audio Technix all around.

66 Pontiac GTO, modified stock radio, Crossfire CFA 302, Kicker KS6.2's in the front kicks, Crossfire CFA 452 for the 6x9's I need.

I have installed a few of them, they will take a beating for sure. Really good power output for how small they are, too.

I believe they do the tests under the load at very least to check the consumption of current, but I would have to check that. They have tested probably over 100 amplfiers over the years. The interesting thing is that most amplifiers provide at least the rated power, whatever was the methodology.. but this one belongs to the minority that do not. Mistakes and measurement errors could happen, so it would be nice if someone confirmed this.

In any case, take a look at most 4-channel Class A/B amplifiers that have been confirmed to provide 100 watts per channel at 4ohm.. Something like MB Quart DSC4125 or Boston Acoustics GT-4100. They're _huge_ , about 20 inches of length add or subtract a couple, most likely due to cooling requirements. Even if NX4 and NX5 do the rated power, they don't have sufficient heat sink area IMO. The NX4 series should still be a decent amplifier, just not enough for SPL type of applications. The other day I connected DMM to my front channels which run hybrid imagine speakers.. and got a reading of about 13V with a test tone at normal volume level, which corresponds to about 40watts of power, so a quality 60watt amp would work perfectly for me. But some people buy NX4/NX5 thinking they often have in mind high load applications.. and some of them have not been happy with these amps.
