Amplifier for Alpine Type R 12 dual 4 ohm, sealed box

Hello all,

I am heading out on a trip tomorrow and need to pick up an amplifier tonight. I already got the deck installed and wires run, the Alpine type R 12 dual 4 ohm subwoofer in a sealed box, just need the amplifier. It will have to be one from BestBuy or CarToys because I will need to pick it up tonight or tomorrow morning.

If I remember correctly the subwoofer likes 500 W at 2 ohm, so currently I am looking at these amplifiers:

Alpine MRX-M50 500 W $230 (Car Toys)
Alpine MRX-M55 530 W $299 (Car Toys)
Alpine MRP-M500 500 W $199 (Best Buy)
JL Audio Slash v2 Series 500/1v2 500 W $487 (Car Toys)

And that's about it off the top of my head. I used to have 2 of these subs in ported boxes trying to be as loud as I could (younger), but now I am going for sound quality, in an attempt to make the music actually sound good while I am driving to work.

Any other recommendations or ideas are welcome.

I would have to say the MRP-500. Why from Best Buy though, the same amp is on ebay for $40-$50 cheaper

Which Alpine Type-R is this? The 2010/11 model has 600watt power handling rating. The 2012 model has something like 1000watt RMS. From the description it sounds that you may even have the pre-2010 model If you were going to buy online, I'd recommend PPI Pantom P1000.1 amplifier. These have been available for over a year at very affordable prices, and have gotten very good reviews. Another thing you could do is upgrade the subwoofer. The new Alpine Type-S now designed for better SQ and 500watt power handling, with online prices pretty low for what you get.

I don't know how old it is, but it is at LEAST before 6/08 because that is when I sold the first one on E-bay. So it is Most likely the oldest Type R. I had a Planet Audio TT2250D on each subwoofer before and it handled it's power just fine in the ported box. But I'm really sure those amps were really over rated. lol
