dual 15" xxx in grand prix

intally i was considering getting 2 15" kicker L7's, but after reading all these great things about the xxx sub..they sound much better

I have a 2k3 grand prix GTP that i'm turning into a show car... I am looking to be able to compete with both SPL and sq....seemed to me like 2 xxx 15" can get both jobs done.

I will have made a sealed box facing into the cabin (customizing the rear seat to fold down) with plexy viewable from the trunk (since they are so ****)

few questions... tell me how all this sounds

-i have a PHD2 earthquake shredder (2000watts rms) amp that i will probably sell to get two hifonics 1500D's to run on each sub.

-current alt. is a 105amp factory deal... will i need bigger.. which battery should i get? i want the yellowtop, but the red would match better

-i'll buy that PG 10farad cap

-have 0 guage wire already ran to the back with a 150amp circiut breaker (will probably need another one)

i'm looking for any suggestions.... really interested in what volume box i will need.

and what do you think i'll hit decible wise??

If you have the room, port, and tune very low, mid-high 20's.

Sell the Earthquake. Not all that great of an amp for everyday use, comes in handy for competion use, though. Get the Hifonics amps.

You will need a MUCH bigger alt. I suggest contacting Dominick Irragi, he makes some very nice alternators at great prices. dominick@tds.net is his email address.

Might want to pick up a pair of Yellow Tops, or at least get one under the hood.

Forget about the cap, it will have no use.

No one can tell you what kind of #'s you'll do on the meter, way too many variables..

Re: dual 15" xxx in grand prix

You are going to want 1400+ watts to get them XXXs really moving. For alternators that 105 isnt going to cut it. youll kill it if you hook them 2 amps on it. You are going to need to upgrade your alternator to at least a 180 and run a red top up front and a yellow in back and that usually would be optimal or even go for the biggest duralast golds you can fit in front and back. Dont worry about the pheonix gold 10 farad cap.. upgrade your output before you save stored power. For your circuit breaker you are going to need a 200. As for what dB youll hit, it will be anywheres between 0-180 dB depending on installation.

running 2 amps your are gonna have to upgrade from a 150a circuit breaker...with both running 1500+ watts it might draw more than 150a.

Re: dual 15" xxx in grand prix

I can pickup a 160amp alt. for like 210, not sure if that will surrfice.

nobody said anything about this being a good setup... how will the SQ on these things be... i dont need to be killing myself while i'm driving down the street, just want it to sound really good... then i wanna hit hard as hell for the competitions.

Does the Hifonics amps have a remote base control? I will probably throw a pheonix gold bass cube in the mix, as long as it will work nicely with 2 amps. Will a 200watt breaker be enough?

and is all this crazy amount of extra money going to be worth it? :p

and the box has to be sealed, i sill want to be able to use the trunk...

does anyone know what volume i will need for a sealed box for these subs for the best SQ?

    thanks for the help guys

www.respl.com look for their recommended specs. And yes it will sound really clean and get loud. Ported would be optimal for these though.

Re: dual 15" xxx in grand prix

to make power you need power.
to get loud you need power.
so you will need a BIG alt for the kind of power you are wanting to run. batteries would also be a good thing.

with you wanting to compete SQ and SPL you are gonna have to give up a little on each or more on one or the other.
around here there are 2 rides that do both.
    an 89 cutlass and a 2000 or so s-blazer.
the cutlass runs a trio or 12's where the rear deck used to be.
the blazer runs a pair of L7 15's.
    both do usaci.

the blazer has a digital audio control EQ to help make life easier and to score well in both.

so it is possible. not easy but possible.

depending on what things you do and how the install is setup will decide what class you go in.
    www.iasca.com
    www.soundoff.org/usaci.htm
    www.slapshow.com
    www.mecacaraudio.com
are the ones that do both sq and spl

    www.termpro.com for dbdrag
    which is spl only

so hit the rules and see where you want to be and go from there

    good luck

dont know if it really makes a difference, but we have similair sized cars and i also have a rear seat fold down thing. when i made my subs fire into the cabin it wasnt loud or sound good at all. when i faced them towards the trunk it was ten times better. you may want to take that into consideration when installing your subs.

yep..same in my car. a large gain in SQ/SPL with the subs facing the hatch.

plexy the *** end (everything execpt the face) of the box and mabye do wood on the front, but mirror the inside of the box so you can see every part of the sub.

that's what inverting is...you turn the sub inside out and wire + on the sub to - on the amp and - on the sub to + on the amp. it looks cooler, and can sometimes sound better/get a little louder than conventional style.
